View Full Version : Tremendously Violent Wheel Hop

I cannot get the car to spin cleanly under any circumstance anymore. It will only wheel hop and not spin. If it wheel hops between gears on the upshift the shifter will shake violently. The car is almost undrivable since the SR does a decent job at breaking the tires loose. Something is definitely wrong somewhere in the rear end.
I went to the drag strip a couple weeks ago and I literally had to go from a bog. If I slipped the clutch, and the tires got just an inkling of getting lose, wheel hop started coming on violently. Even during the upshifts down the track, the chirp between gears is awful feeling as well.
Currently I have sold flat washers for the differential mount bolts (all tight). I have Nismo motor/transmission mounts (all tight). Aluminum subframe collars are installed. On Tein Flex coilovers, set moderately soft. I just don't understand. I friend of mine has a 200K mile S13 on all stock components and his car spins cleanly under every circumstance.
If any of you have some suggestions of some problem areas to check, it would be greatly appreciated. I've searched and found a couple threads, but they lead to dead ends. If I were a betting man, I'd say the rear subframe bushings are toast, but I just don't know. I'm going to stay out of it until I solve the problem since I will most certainly break something.

Did you check all the arms? Traction rod in particular. You said you already have subframe collars, double check make sure the subframe is solid. Subframes have a tendency to crack and break where the diff bolts up to.

What he said. Check your wheel bearings too.
Personally, I don't trust solid collars on old bushings, so that would be my first guess if its as bad as it sounds.

At a glance, everything looks fine, but I'll give it a thorough inspection the next time I'm under there. Thank's for the information. Something has got to be amiss, no question about it.

Wouldn't wheel bearings in need of replacement cause noise? I have differential noise, but nothing that remotely sounds like a wheel bearing.

From personal experience, when my rear wheel bearings went out, you can hear a humming noise from that side of the car, specially on the freeway. It would momentarily go away when you change lane since you're changing the load on that wheel. I dont see a wheel bearing causing your issue unless its loose as shit. Even a loose axle/hub nut dont think would cause what you're describing. It has to be something with the subframe, arms or bushing issue in the rear end. Only other thing would be your suspension...what coilover or shocks are you running? If your suspension is too stiff, itll wheel hop. Thats why drag coilovers like HKS are awesome...proper spring rate and dampner to let your rear end squat down and reduce the hop

Motor or tranny mount. Or diff bushings

I had pretty bad wheel hop before. It ended up being a combination of blown rear shocks and bad subframe bushings.

I'm on Tein Flex coilovers. I have them set firm, but by no means ridiculously stiff. It wheel hopped even on stock suspension.
I agree with you... subframe, arms, bushings.

Coilovers are not blown, they have about 3000 miles on them. I checked them, and the shafts are dry and clean. I know what "blown shock" wheel hop feels like, and this is not it.

I have Nismo motor/transmission mounts, they are in superb condition (maybe 10K miles on them). And yes, they are bolted down tight.

I just browsed your thread, how was your wheel hop after. I plan to do the same process you did.
