View Full Version : Differential [??] Problem Help!

Yesterday when I was driving to work the car started getting this violent wobble and shake like my tires were off balance or something. it was weird. it only did it when i accellerated and pushed down the gas pedal. then i stopped at a stop light and it was fine. then when the car shifted into 4th gear [automatic] there was this buzzing/humming sound that comes from the rear. Again when I let off the gas it stops. So the only thing I can guess is that it's coming from where the driveshaft meets the differential or the differential itself. I'm pretty sure it's not the transmission since it was rebuilt about 6 months ago. I don't think it could be lack of fluid because it only does it in 4th. Any idea.?

weird.... get it up in the air and check the carrier bearing on the driveshaft.

I just took the car to the transmission guy to see what he thought about the noise. We drove it and came to these conclusions:
-it could actually be the differential messing up
-it could be some seals at the end of the axles
-or it could be the carrier bearing in the driveshaft
we both think it is the carrier bearing and he said he'd take a look at it. how much should i expect to pay for a carrier bearing and install?

well we think we have the problem...my mechanic thinks its either the universal joints or the carrier bearing, more than likely the carrier bearing, BUT the universal joints can't be removed on the 240sx. [i didn't not realize this until now]. I have heard from multiple sources that the universal joint can't be removed in turn the carrier bearing can't be removed. this equals = i'm screwed. I have to find a used or new driveshaft assembly.
but we're thinking if this is even the problem. when we drive the car it doesn't happen until you get in 4th gear. when you take overdrive off the sound goes away. when i'm driving it down a hill and let off the gas there a rattling sound instead of the humming. if it was the driveshaft wouldn't it make the sound the entire time the driveshaft is turning.

sure this thread is a little old, did you ever resolve your problem? I checked my center driveshaft support bearing and there seems to be a lot of play. I was quoted about $100 for a Nissan center bearing replacement "kit"(online price) but you mention the bearing won't come off over the ujoints?
I get a vibration in the gas pedal/shift knob- it seems the vibration is from something vibrating the firewall or floor pan ( bearing bolts underneath)

yeah man this problem was crazy...everyone was telling my the noise coming from underneath [in 4th gear only] was my driveshaft. i replaced the driveshaft to one with good u joints etc...and bam....still have the problem. it was my transmission. I should have known since it only happened in fourth gear. but whatever..i needed another driveshaft anyway. but all is fine and dandy now.
