I have *HEARD* of STAR smog shops that can "pass" a car, but I don't have any personal experience/knowledge. The bottom line is that it's only going to get more difficult from here. I have also *HEARD* that there will be new equipment coming out later this year that will be equipped with cameras. THEN you would be REALLY screwed. There is a big thread on this in the regional section.

you have to smog every two years. only cars that are exempt are 1975 and under cause of stupid Arnold.

It wasn't Arnold, it was the smog nazi's in charge of the CARB board. The 25 year rule was frozen at 1975 in the year 2000 which was a few years before Arnold was elected governer in 2003. Get your facts straight before you go blaming people.

They are making me get a stupid carb filter on my 04 semi truck before jan 1 2014. C.A.R.B legal filter for my truck and labor is 15,000$. It has to be done by a california carb shop. Its such a crock of shit. They either say the truck has to drive less then 1,000 miles a year in california or for me to get some grant from the state run 3/4 of my miles inside california.

registering it in a different area may be your best bet. if you dont wanna do all the smog stuff.

here in my area of IL is 95 and older are smog exempt. and just a county away they dont do smog at all ever. so if you can find a place and set up a po box.

IMO that's awesome. Trucking, farm equipment, and other industrial equipment are the biggest polluters in the US. IMO it's about damned time they stopped trying to blame enthusiasts and older vehicles for all of it. No sympathy from me, I think it's GREAT...

Registering out of state is illegal. If you're a California resident you HAVE to have your vehicles registered in California. You'll probably get away with it for a while, but once that dickhead cop sees that your liscence is a CA liscence and your plates aren't you might just have yourself some trouble.

Bladetech and racepar hit the nail on the fucking head. Not only is it better to buy a used car and keep it running and on the road than buy a new one, I'd argue that modifying an older car has a positive impact on the world.

If you buy an S chassis, 20+ years after production, not only are you, as an enthusiast saving the resources that would be wasted on a new car, but you're simultaneously stimulating the economy by buying new parts. And if the state of California had a basic sniffer test for emmisions, everyone would likely run a cat and basic smog equipment on basically every swap that's done.

What people do now since they won't pass anyways, is basically say "fuck it" and run no smog equipment.

Think about it, if you had an SR, and needed to pass just a sniffer, would you run a cat, or pay $300 for an illegal smog? Common sense.

For the motorcycles some would argue that it's safer. You've never heard the saying "loud pipes save lives"? IMO it's mostly bullshit. Safe riders save lives. Oddly enough it seems that the Harley's can get away with pretty much whatever they want, but the sportbikes seem to be hassled more. The bottom line is that cops make exceptions for the vehicles they like. Since most cops are "hardcore badasses" they like the Harley's and giant useless diesel trucks. If you had a retarded badass '69 camaro you could probably run open header all you want without issues. Same with a Ferarri F430 or something. Unfortuanetly, cops don't like "riceburners" so we get picked on.

Yet Prius owners just drive up the price of gas through taxes. There is already talk of having to up the tax on gas due to fuel efficient cars bringing in less revenue to fix roads. Its that or up registration on these and even at its best its going to be a meet in the middle situation.

So if everyone buy a corolla or civic, you still blame the prius? You do realize they don't save THAT much in gas compared to a Hyundai accent or EG Civic.

What the hell is all this Prius hate? Of course the government will raise taxes further because they calculate per gallon instead of percentage sales. In 2000 gas was around $2.40 and it is okay to commute on 23mpg vehicle. Teasing $5 galln many times, you think commuting in a 240sx is that beneficial now? Think miles per dollar and not miles per gallon. Full tank use to be $25 for me. Don't blame a car, blame the world for developing and gasoline as well. Like Racepar best describe about clean 240s, problem of supply and demand.

Lastly, be thankful registration and smog is still cheaper than other places in the world. Most of you would just ditch the 240 if the US uses Japan's sha'ken certification every 2 years because its pretty expensive on older cars.

zerodameaon
05-09-2013, 03:18 AM
Its truth though, I am buying a bike that gets 65mpg and the registration on that thing for being a 1985 is about 30 bucks more than my 1993 240 being almost 10x bigger in sense of weight and displacement and according to DMV it has to due with less taxes on gas. Its not only the Prius(all hybrids and electric cars) that causes higher prices, because I am speaking strictly about gas taxes here, but they do contribute. As for the larger price of gas that has other factors that I am not yet talking about.

Personally I love the Leaf and if I could live with only getting 70mi on a charge I would go and buy one as a second(commuter) car and deal with the higher registration that is down the road. But my parking spot is not near any electrical boxes so it really sucks.

Iirc, in order to register the car in CA you'll have to take the car to the referee .. good luck with that, seriously. Although... there IS some sort of loophole for those of you with sr's. I don't recall if it was the maxima or sentra.. but didn't one of them come with an sr20de here in the states? Just something to think about.. ;)

Not a loophole for 240sx though because the SR20DE is different engine code than SR20DET.

SR20DE is available for the following cars in the U.S.:
200SX
Infinite G20
Pulsar
Sentra

You technically can put SR20DE from a 200SX to a 240sx, but you need EVERYTHING stock from ECU to exhaust headers to get it pass inspection. I know, I had a year long nightmare trying to help a friend get his 2ZZ engine pass on his MR-S.

If you have to take your car to a star certified station then you are fucked. there are a couple star stations that do it under the table, but prepare to pay upwards of 3-500 to smog it.

Loophole might've been the wrong word to use but either way, point taken.

it all depends on the inspector cus when i got mine registered for cali (via FL) all he really cared about was the small stuff like (brake lights blinkers etc....) when i popped the hood only thing he looked for was if the vins matched...wat part of cali did u move to?

Same here. When I registered my car with Washington plates there was no referee just an inspector at dmv that all he cared about was matching VINs. Shut my hood and called it a day, I did have to get it smogged though. I'm running a CA18 btw.

Well I bought the car off of a person that lived in Washington, brought it over and was driving it for a while with Washington plates but didn't like to get bothered with the how come you have a CA license but out of state plates. Just went to DMV to register the car like you would any other car with an extra form that they use for out of state car. Not sure how other state laws are though

Don't they understand we drive 20+ year old cars that have been through an engine or two? How many 240's still have matching vin's? Lol

Lol ain't that the truth. But what I mean is that they check the vin that's on the firewall and on the dash and also on the door... They want to see if they match and verify that the vin comes out clean. If they don't match, they check each one. They just want to be sure that none of the numbers come back as stolen or so...and of course after they verify the vins (if you have more than one anywhere in the car) and they come clean, they'll send you out to state ref I think so they can assign you one vin and tack it to each location they found a vin in. Does that make sense? I tried to explain it as detailed as possible :-)

I have learned it is best to keep your KA around if you live in Cali. It really does not take much to swap back.

Oh hell no. Too many stupid possibilities for the person installing, especially stupid shit like stripping bolts and crossthreading spark plugs.

I've bought 2 used engines already and I had to deal with these stupid headaches. I'd rather rebuild it with a professional engine rebuilder and not fix someone elses' mistakes.

I thin it's safe to say that all smog only stations and maybe even all smog & repair shops are STAR stations now..

My local smog stations owners are pissed . Some cant get star approved and looking at closing down. One guy told me that about 90% of cars are being sent to star stations.

Need the one guy that can help us and rake in the mula.

Just another step in the cars must be 100% OEM specs direction this state has been going for a long time. If all the states start going that way they will be putting a lot of people out of work as race only applications can't support a workforce like there currently is.
