code tripping

my friend showed me how to trip up the ecu on gm's with a paper clip and read the codes w/o a code reader. is there a cheap way to do this with obd I, so i dont have to spend 150 on one?

Goto Autozone and rent one.

you mean on the 240sx? There is a procedure to read the code.. involves turning a knob on the ecu, and turning the car on.. I'm lazy or I'd search for you..
