I've had the 240 for a few months. Never looked at this part of the car... Surprisingly, everything but the radio works. This is the view of the interior fuse box.
What exactly is that part that's covered in that corrosion and what would I have to do to get a new one? :bite:

i agree, that really does look like fire damage. that thing is pretty fucked up. your best bet is to try and find a replacement.

it is called the smj and that is where all the wires from the front and rear connect

Thanks for then help guys. It wasn't salvage but the rest of the car has perfect body, paint and all original interior pieces, 140k miles and runs good. I got it for 2k. So, I'm still thinking it wasn't entirely a bad decision. I just gatta jump through some hoops to find a smj. 240s don't sit in junk yards in Iowa.

Judging by the extend of the damage to the fuse panel itself (right hand side) and the corroded/broken/wtf fuse towards the bottom, something serious happened with that thing.
I'd be willing to bet the cause is one the following two:
- Sketchy Alarm/Radio/Sub/Random Electrical Setup drew too much current and over heated a bunch of stuff before the fuse could catch it and/or it shorted before the fuse. This causes shit to over heat, melt, and lose it's protective coating.
- Car was submerged for some period of time while the electrical system was live. (Or depending on where you live, there's a hole in the firewall that allowed it to get doused with road salt.)
Or a combination of those two.

That's not corrosion, that's fire. You need a whole body harness to fix it correctly. Like from the firewall to the taillights, including the underdash. Trying to cut, strip, and solder all those wires would take about a billion years. Of course to change out the body harness you'll need to COMPLETELY strip the ENTIRE interior, but that's still a better option time wise. I would also check the underhood wiring very carefully as well. It is extremely possible that there are lots of wires damaged from shorting.
