View Full Version : Shifter or tranny??

So my tranny feels pretty good but once and a while it's a little hard to get into 2nd and if you're at a high rpm and try to put it in 2nd quickly it makes a grinding and you can feel it in the shifter. Now I always thought oh it's because the tranny syncros are worn/wearing out and either need to be replaced or a new tranny needs to go in but someone was telling me it's because of the short shift I have or the "shifter bushing" is worn out which I'm not sure if that's what it is but I'm hoping it was then I'll pop a solid metal one in and be quite happy.

Can anyone confirm as to which the problem actually is?

i had an issue getting into third when i was accelerating hard..... turned out my engine mounts were worn enough for me to twist my engine.... it would throw everything off alignment till i let off the throttle..... replaced my engine mounts and it shifts like butter ever since....

Shouldn't be the slave as it was replaced and bled and seems to go into other gears fine. Definitely not my motor mounts as I replaced them with the drift freaq ones but my oem tranny mount is worn out I'm sure. Would that be a viable fix or is that just something to try?

It only grinds when I'm at high rpm and literally slam it into 2nd as quick as I can.

Sounds more like syncro problems, is it only second gear?

Seems to be but I can't really say. I've been having major turbo lag and I used to slam it into 2nd to try to get the wheels to spin but they wouldn't because the turbo wouldn't spool soon enough after shifting so I've never slammed it like that into any other gear.

Check your turbo gasket while you're at it lol.

Which turbo gasket? Now that I think about it I've seen a drip of oil forming on my compressor housing but it's not leaking enough that it leaves drips on the ground

I think I have a megan racing one it came on the car too when I bought it a couple years back, I wish I had a B&M but don't know if there's much of a difference as I've never bought one but thinking I might just go and order the solid bushing, even if it doesn't fix my problem if it helps the shifter feel better I'll be happy too

i believe it`s the synchro. i used to drag race and i would always power shift(not letting off the gas between shifts), and if second is hard to get into, the synchro was always the problem. we had the synchros replaced twice in one season. the reason the synchros would go bad really quick on our car was due to missing second gear at 10k rpms, yours is probably due to mileage wear and tear. your synchro is not bad yet, if it is, it will grind even if you don`t slam it in gear.

Synchros for sure. Is it harder to get into second when its cold out and the car hasnt warmed up fully yet? You can try flushing the tranny with better oil also.

Not 100% sure as it's a summer car so it's usually driven only when it's hot out and it's usually warmed up a bit first too but it might be a bit tougher until its been driven for a couple mins but I can't remember off the top of my head. I did put some fresh oil in it and it definitely seemed to help a bit with how smooth it was shifting in any of the gears.

For the guys with a short shifter how much slack do you actually have in the shifter? I can shake mine around a decent amount without it actually moving the gear box part that shifts it.
