View Full Version : z33 diff internals into s13 diff?

I tried searching and 1. search isn't working on here and 2. Google returned no good answers. Just wondering if the internals of a z33 diff will fit into an s13 diff?
From what I have read both are r200s. So I'm hopping that they can be interchanged.
The reason I ask is because the engine and trans I'm going to use require a ratio from around 3.15-3.38 and an automatic z33 diff is a 3.35 which is about as close as I could get.
Thanks for the help guys!

A quick search on Google netted some answers, ill give you the simple search terms. first result third post. Quick S13 differential question
i tried swapping a J30 diff internals into S13 pumpkin, it didn't work.
the output shafts were longer.
knowing that, the ouput shafts on the Z33 are probably different from the S13, so it's not going to fit.
the diff itself, and the ring gear should, but the problem is the shafts.

Did you try putting the J30 shafts in or did you use the S13 shafts, you have to match them to the internals.
i used the J30 output shafts..
the s13 output shafts won't work in a j30 vlsd

There is some combo of J30 to S13 housing that works I just cant remember it. I just answered the info about the internals though, but like jamg said I imagine the issue you will face is also the output shafts.
Try swapping out ring and pinion gear and leave the stock center part.

What engine and transmission are you wanting to use?
I think that even though they are both R200, the ring gear in the 350z may be physically larger than the stock one. You can always try and post the results here.

They do work. You have to use the stock 4.08 ring gear if you are going to keep the s13 open diff pumpkin with its pinon gear. You will have to grind down the longer J30 shaft so that it fits past the housing of the pumpkin.
The reason why it hits and doesn't go all the way in is because the open diff has two shafts that are similar in length. The VLSD has one short, and one long shaft. The R200V pumpkin is a little bit different to accommodate this difference. When you put the shafts together they still equal the same distance however.
I touch base on this topic in my build thread...

The Z32 N/A VLSD will work just like the J30 VLSD.
The '97 J30 VLSD is different from all other model J30 VLSDs in the fact that it has a different number of teeth for the output shafts and internal spline. It's a 6bolt setup just like the '95-'96 model but you cannot mix and match output shafts with the diff. I found this out the hard way.

That is a good reference, but it doesn't address his question. Double derp.

Well I spent probably 2 hours reading and searching last night. It seems like it could work. But it might need a bit of modification and or swapping parts. The reason I wanted to run the z33 diff is because I want to swap an m50 into an s13. It would need a lower final drive ratio as the max you can run with an m50 is like 3.38ish. The z33 auto is a 3.35 or something like that. But I might just have to use a z32 n/a diff. Or just keep it 4.10 and just sacrifice 1st gear. Either way. Thanks for the help guys. If I do try the z33 diff ill deff post results.

It might be easier and safer to just modify your rear subframe to fit a z33 diff.
I know what you're going through, I had a 4.08 with a 2jz r154 setup and first gear was very short until I switched over to a Q45 3.69 which was so perfect that even my speedometer worked without any modification.

The pinion and ring gears are larger on the 350z, as well as the case to accommodate those factors. Easiest option is to modify the subframe to use the entire differential, like stated above.

i didn't understand the whole grinding down part.
i measured the output shafts side by side on the J30 and S13 open diff, the J30 was much longer in length.
you were only grinding down the part on the end of the shaft so it would fit in the hole... but the problem i ran into was the fact that one shaft was longer than the other, so it would stick out after everything was put together.
i tried your method of grinding down that area below the red... it didn't fit.

Thanks for the info guys. Any idea how difficult it will be to do that? I saaw one thread where the guy put a z33 in an s14 subframe and had to chop it down a bit then weld in reinforcement plates.

Not worth it, IMO. You may just want to see how you like the stock gearing once you are done with the swap. It would suck to do all that work only to find out you would have been fine with 4.08.

I don't think you are understanding much of anything I'm saying... I'm not too sure what you are implying, but are you trying to tell me a J30 VLSD and its output shafts don't work with an S13 pumpkin? Given the fact that countless amounts of people have done this, I currently have this setup on my car, I gave photo proof of doing this, and I know a handful of other people who have done this.

I can second that it works, takes some work but you can get it done.
Also to the guys who have more knowledge about diffs then me swapping the ring a pinion gear would achieve what he wants right?

All the R200s have the 200MM ring gear but that does not mean that they will fit in all 200 cases. I have a VQ swapped S14 and I had a Q45 case with an S15 helical carrier in it with 3.54 gears and the S15 output shafts. Worked fine but 3.54s are just too high. Could barely use 1st gear and had way too much RPM for freeway cruising. I wanted to install The Z33 diff case and have done to mod to my subframe to make the housing fit as described in the online post you mentioned. After all of that I find that the Z33 case is wider than the J30 or the Q45. My S15 helical carrier is too narrow to bolt in to the Z33 case. I'm looking at modifying the carrier to make it fit into the Z33 case or just using the VLSD from the Z. I want to end up with either the 3.35 gears or 3.13. I'm nearly possitive from having seen one in person that the 2005-2008 pathfinder uses the same R200 case as the Z33 but has the 3.13 gears. I will be taking my Z33 case to the wrecking yard that has the pathfinder diff to make a side by side comparrison. I'll report back what I find.

You sir are my hero. Thank you for all the info. And please let me know how things go. If theres a way to fit the 3.35 gears in there I'd love to do it.

40flash a little off topic, but i am in the middle of my vqswap. Did you hookup a speed sensor on your diff?

Yes I did hook up a dakota digital speed sensor to the Q45 diff ABS sensor. Works great. Hook it up as Dakota says and then call their tech and they will walk you through the set up and adjustments. Very accurate speedo. PM me if you like. I have tons of info on this swap.

Thanks man! You should do a build thread or vq info thread. Since the other vq threads suckkkk

40flash, unwtdhero,
I agree. This swap has some good threads to do research on but there are some massive holes. I'm in the middle of putting a VQ35HR from an '07 Nismo Z into my S13 and the diff gearing is a huge issue I'm running into. I know my stock VLSD will be a crappy gearing so I've been pursuing putting the Z33 diff into the S13 subframe because of the gearing and speedo/ABS. Since I don't have front ABS rings/sensors, it doesn't look like I'll be able to get ABS working anyway. Additionally, I really don't know if the stock speedo/ECU will tell accurate speed with only the rears sending signal.
I expect to get a custom drive shaft but now that I've been trying to swap the diff, I'll be needing custom output shafts as well. That's about $800 in custom shafting I'll be taking ( LOL ). Not I'm thinking that there's gotta be a better way to go about getting this gearing and a working speedometer...
Currently looking into dakota speedo converter and the Q45 diff swap. I would love to not have to cut up my subframe...
