I bought a car that advertised to have an OS Giken clutch (maybe twin plate?). The clutch is quite stiff but I figured I'd be able to adjust to it.

I got a Youtube video, could you tell me if this is normal or is it screwed? I went to a garage and they said from the sound the clutch is screwed.

It's a BMW E30 but it got the SR20 in it.

That doesn't sound like clutch chatter.... sounds like a bad throw out bearing maybe. Can't really tell what's going on in the video

What would help? I heard OS Giken Twin Plate clutches are known for making this kinda noise. I am sort of hoping for a reconfirmation or I'd have to spend $350 or something.

look through the pivot arm hole on the bell housing and look for a gold like plate

whole bunch of ignorance here. having a os twin plate i can tell you they make no noise at all. super singles with the chatter plate do. super singles loud. twin disk quiet.

your noise sounds like a bad throw out. chatter plates are loud and terrible sounding. like a *shing ching shing ching* like your sharpening a knife..

Well this twin plate isn't silent.

It makes exactly the same noise!

My bad I didnt have the door open so you could hear how loud it is.

Usually when TOBs go bad doesn't it mean the clutch plate is gone bad too? The clutch is really grabby.

Sounds like you are adding to the ignorance.

I had an OS Twin plate installed in my 180sx when i was in Japan and it chattered like crazy when the clutch pedal was depressed. The newer OS models do not make noise.

ok.. cool. well. i dont have a newer one. its pretty old with the pressed steel pressure plate. adding no ignorance sir. its plain and simple. i has os twin. it has make no noise. did you install your twin plate in your 180sx when you was in japan? or did you buy it like that? i wouldnt put it past someone to exaggerate a super single into a twin plate when trying to sell a car. just sayin.. it happens.

sorry implied that i was ignorant. had to question you. i have pictures of my twin plate from my build and i can video tape it today if it will please you..

My TS2B is pretty quiet, only time you'd kinda hear it is when I depress the clutch. My ORC 409D (single) was louder than the twins. Triples, all of them makes a distinct sound. You'd know a triple when you hear it.

i believe this to be another tale of exageration.

honestly. every super single ive ever seen or heard sounds like that. twin hardly ever make noise and when they do it does NOT sound like that.

heres an idea. instead of calling me ignorant. I pulled this off OS gikens own webite in their FAQ section.

All OS clutch kits utilize a free-floating pressure plate design. Most “traditional” clutch designs secure the pressure plate to the cover through the use of a pressure plate drive strap (aka “granny strap”). The advantage of having the granny strap is that clutch operation remains noiseless whether the clutch is engaged or disengaged. However, in many situations where the clutch is being abused (i.e. “spirited” driving and/or racing), the granny strap can become a weak point in the system and has a tendency to bend or break, potentially causing clutch failure and damage to drivetrain components. With the OS free-floating pressure plate design, pressure applied to the disks is even throughout the clutch lifespan, and the friction material of the metallic disks is bonded through a specialized process (as opposed to the cheaper riveted process used by most other competitors and OEM). This aids in increasing durability and lengthening the useful service life of an OS clutch, as power will continue to be transmitted effectively until the disks are extremely thin (since no rivets are present to create another weak point). Some race teams have gone through multiple seasons on an OS clutch before requiring a rebuild!

In regards to multi-plate clutch designs, all aftermarket manufacturers' multi-plate clutches will inherently emit a noise when the clutch is disengaged. This noise is emitted from the centerplate(s) vibrating against the cover posts. However, many competitors' clutches do not utilize the same strengthening processes during manufacturing as OS Giken, which will lead to increased material degradation over time. Because of this, the clutch noise will often become louder over time, as the centerplate(s) start to wear away and have more free-play within the housing. The OS design, coupled with the use of the most suitable materials and manufacturing processes, will minimize any system degradation and help to keep the clutch performing and sounding the same as when it was first installed. In fact, many OS Giken clutch users are proud to point out the signature noise emitted to anyone who asks, as it is a reminder that the car is equipped with one of the best performing and longest lasting clutches available!

noise made by vibration. not spinning two metal disks together.

 i have the TS2B as well. What Ray said is exactly right. They all make a different noise. Mines silent only because i have a 3 inch exhaust that ends at my trans. ill never hear a slight chatter. i would hear a single. cannot attest to a triple lol

From what I've seen, ORC clutches are pretty noisy across the board compared to OS Giken. The "shwing" noise is almost like a signature of ORC plate clutches.

Personally, I like OS Giken clutches over ORC.

^^me too^^. Had an ORC twin & Nismo slave in my GT-R and it was unforgiving as HELL... a total mutherfucker in Okinawa traffic, but AWESOME for an 8,000rpm launch lol!

Not sure about noise differences between old & new OS clutches... My OS twin makes a distinct sound that would sound horrendous to the untrained ear; but great to those of us who know what the sound actually is. I have yet to hear another twin-plated S-chassis here in the St Louis area... maybe someday :)

I'm running the same TS2B clutch I had in my SR in Oki when I first got it, to my current RB25 setup. I traded Michiya the flywheel before I left Oki. The clutch is basically the same (plates, cage and pressure plate), jus the flywheel are different between engines. I got a spare TS2B clutch that needs a rebuild, thats how much I like these clutches...

I just heard the clip, thats with you stepping on the clutch?!?! Sound louder than its supposed to. My clutch would slightly chatter when its pressed but nowhere close to hear it that loudly inside the cabin. Was this a brand new clutch or a used clutch? If used, the intermediate plate might be too thin and letting the plates chatter alot more than its supposed to.

Yeah, I didn't notice it the last time I drove it which is good but I also got an awful screeching noise while trying to back out of the parking lot. The main issue is that it is very very grabby. I get very nervous about getting it out because the clutch never likes slipping. I end up launching into traffic rather than rolling off into it. Got a lot of stares.

I bought the car with the clutch so it's used.

I am getting the clutch pulled out today and changing my exhaust.

Would a stock clutch be good for 300 whp if I decide to go there?

I need my clutch to slip at least. A little stiffness is fine because I could use a workout.

Or am I still inexperienced and if I drive the OS more I will get a hang of it and be able to slip it in dead slow bumper to bumper traffic? I am really nervous of rolling off in traffic on a bridge or a small street.

I think you live where I live, how do you cope with it in traffic?

Well, if the clutch is new and have not been broken in yet, that could explain why its grabby/touchy. Took a good 500 miles to break in my clutch and its a fucking pain in the ass to drive before then. Even now, almost 2 yrs on it, its still touchy but not as bad.

That doens't sound like chatter to me either. If anything you usually hear chatter when the clutch isn't pressed, as the floater plate is bouncing around.

Well turns out I was completely ignorant.

The car had a worn out OS Giken SD480 Super Single, but damn that is some grabby worn out clutch, want to keep it.

The garage got me an Exedy 225 single, had a warning about not driving it rough. I hope it doesn't explode or something if I try to go for more horses. This isn't underkill is it?

Gonna get that thing a little quieter too. lol A new muffler.

Keep the clutch and get a rebuild kit. Rebuild kit is about $600-700 tho for single plates. Twin plates are about $900.

Damn that is expensive. Don't know why the PO had that in there with a pretty stock motor. Maybe usable in the future along with that terribly loud muffler.

I am getting some squeal whistle noise from the gearbox when the clutch isn't depressed.

I hope its okay.

I own both the OSGiken super single and the twin plate. they both make the same noise as your video and its normal due to the floating plates in the middle. pretty cool sound imo.
