View Full Version : Vins not matching title..

Hey so i checked out a 240sx today that i was right about to purchase until i looked at the vins...

The dash and door jam VINs did not match the title. The title states it is a 91 chassis, and the vins do declare that it is also a 91 chassis.

The firewall vin however does match the title's VIN number, which i saw. He later says that the firewall has 2 vins...

He's going to go to the DMV to check that out tomorrow. I'm thinking maybe it was retagged/stolen or i don't know. He said i can call a cop and have them run the vins and says it wasn't. What you guys think? Pretty sketchy..

Did it cross your mind that he could have swapped the dashboard out at one point? Or maybe even someone before him?

That's fine but that sill doesn't rule out the door jam. There's no swapping that out.

Yup,
Curious to know if the dashboard and door jam match.

Yeah, it's a different story if the firewall and door jam vins matched, which one of the two vins in the firewall do, but don't match the title..

If the door jam/ firewall (if only there was one) matched the title, i would've taken it.
I feel what your saying but you've misread what i said.

Mind ****.

(one of the two VINS on firewall match the door jam, which don't match the title)
If the idiot was re tagging vins, why wouldn't he change the dash/door jam, and leave old vin in firewall, it just doesn't make sense.

The dash vin matches the door jam. I didn't see the firewall vin that matches the door jam/dash. Just a bright silver plate in the firewall passenger side that has the vin numbers matching the title.

The vin on the dash/ door jam (Took a picture so i can run carfax on it if i can find someone is: JN1MS34P7MW004878)

The dude claimed he bought it as a shell and threw a sr20 in it. He had an excuse for every con on the car but seemed shocked when he saw the vins didn't match (like who doesn't check vins when they buy a chassis... )

Maybe he put the plate from another car on the firewall and happened to have the title for that car.
The VIN you posted hasn't been registered since 07...

Take a picture of the silver plate on the firewall with the VIN#, Model ID #, paint code etc and all that information, it'll tell you exactly what features were on the car from factory.

Boom. That right there tells me the firewall VIN plate was swapped and the car was most likely stolen.

I thought there's also a vin thats stamped on the firewall, right next to the silver plate? If the title matches that vin, then I wouldnt sweat it.

That's what he is saying, the VIN that matches the title is the one on the silver plate (easily swappable). And the VIN thats stamped on the firewall also matches the door jam and dashboard (but not the title). Aka super sketch.

Plenty of 240s out there man. Don't waste your time on a sketchy one.

Yup vin on silver plate is easily swappable. I just took mine off the other day to paint the bay instead of taping it off. The real chassis vin will be stamped to the right of it when looking fromthe front of the car. Dashboard vin is also swappable (rivets). Ive ran into cars where the door sill sticker was painted over, the firewall stamp was cut out and the plates on dash and firewall matched the title. Definitely stolen lol

OP, walk away.

Vin sealing and tempering is illegal. Even if he swapped or the dash and just forgot to change tags you could end up in big trouble.

The guy could be legit but who wants to deal with a paper work night mare or the risk involved.

who gives a fuck its a 240sx. if you are getting hell of a deal its one thing, there are ways to deal with the vins legally. if its not good then walk. why do you guys make it so complicated. only thing that will define that car as stolen is that vin plate (and you dont know that it is at this point). its easy to swap/grind/restamp vins on chassis.

vin tempering ans swapping IS legal. its called restoration. maybe it was damaged and you wanted to repaint. nobody will give you shit. however, if you do it BY LAW technically you have to have receipts, a green sheet and inspection by DOT (present them those beforehand). just like it is with bikes. grow up. illegal this...illegal that. life is illegal.

id be more worried that if the dashboard and door jam vins match but yet the firewall does not....this car may have been chopped and welded back together.....happens all the time....not something you want to be driving as a structural death trap if it was.

But if it doesnt match, give the fucking car back. I wouldnt wanna be caught driving that car. To the dumbass who said who gives a fuck cuz its a 240...you would give a fuck if you get arrested for a federal offense and you're excuse is "the car came that way".

Okay, so this is wierd. The guy told me everything went fine at the currency exchange and that they are sending him a new title? He said he's going to go pay 50$ extra tp get an "expediate" title..i'm assuming he meant expedited title service. which would come by the end of the week? If he did apply for this and gave them the vins he's basically screwed?

Too bad i don't believe this BECAUSE my buddy ran the dash/doorjam VIN and it stated the vehicle was stolen.

And to the person that said it could've been chopped and put togetherr is a high possibility.

A con to the vehicle was that the strut tower weld broke and has a cracked strut tower. Both sides were worked on and it didn't seem like there was rust.

The only reason i was all on this is because it was an s13 coupe, with a good deal of mods. And i got him down to 4k and walked away but made him change his mind.

Nissan 240sx coupe (http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/3625810513.html)

The engine bay is SUPER clean and the motor is really healthy.

Just texted to confirm that it all went good and he claims it did, he went to the DMV today.

Call the cops and report the vehicle.

They will take it form him and either crush it or auction it off.

How are you even still considering this car? Stolen dash/doorjam vins? One day you will learn to buy a stock car and build it yourself. You don't want to deal with other people's garbage.

On a side note, JASMA not jasmin is not a brand of exhaust! It's like a Japanese version of CARB legal. Rare jasmin exhaust lol what a joke.

Reason why i'm still considering it is because he says when he gave them the vin they just said it hasn't been registered for over 5 years and he applied to get a title and expediate it to get it faster and said it should be ready tomorrow?

Either the dude that ran the vin is messing with me or i don't know. Anyone here can run the VIN? JN1MS34P7MW004878

Dont fucking come anywhere close to that car if one of those vins came up as a stolen car...whats so fucking hard to understand? If some reason you get pulled over and the cops run the stolen vin...you're now in possession of stolen property. Enjoy some prison time...

JUST WALK AWAY. Not worth your time because you are on the hook same as if you stole the car when you buy it from this guy. If you want a stolen car go steal on yourself at least you know where it came from (disclaimer: sarcasm not to be taken seriously, do so at your own risk.)

Well apparantely he ran the vin again and it won't go through and the kid will have a title with the correct vins on it.

This is why i am still considering this. Some of the jokes are pretty funny but i'm trying to be serious.. i'm going to wait and see whatsup with the title, maybe it is legit?

Listen, I see you're in Chicago, stay away from that car, vin swapping/retagging is very common in that city with stolen cars, get all the vins, post them on here and also contact your local police department, don't consider anything he tells you, lots of shady fucks in Chicago and as soon as you get caught driving that thing you will be arrested, my gf's uncle is a cook county sheriff and my bro is a Chicago police officer and they've both told me how common it is like 1 in 3 imports in Chicago has "tampered vehicle identification numbers" and YOU will be prosecuted for having it in your possession, wether you knew about it or not

lol.... lots of funny dudes.

It didn't come out as stolen, re-ran the vins.. previously punched them in wrong and came up as a stolen. The vin's on chassis are not stolen. just an FYI. Still doesnt explain the swapped tag on the firewall even IF the DMV somehow does give him the right title.

Here's an auto check as previously posted: http://kendricknissanlafayette.com/vehicle_display_carfax.php?vin=JN1MS34P7MW004878&sid=5021655
