i think i need to time my motor, but i have never timed one before, so what will i need? and how do i do it? should i get a regular timing light, or an advanced timing light? and to time it do i just turn the CAS? and how to i tell if its in or out of time?
i have an s13 redtop sr20 w/ full 3" exaust, MBC, Walbro 255lph, FMIC, Greddy Type S(recirc) i think thats it
thanks

u will need a stop watch and a sweat rag and bottle of gatorade might help   :hahano: but seriously......(haha i jsut wanted to use that smily :D)
ok anyway, are u talking about ignition timeing or cam timing??? casue with ignition timing all u need is a timing light and a soket (12mm i beleive :D) and ratchet. then u take the timeing light and hook it up (batt +, -, and plug wire for cyl. 1) and then point the light at the Crank pully while the motor is running u will see little marks on the crank pully as the light blinks(if u dont ur timing is really bad lol) and u jsut turn the distrubuter till its lined up the way u want it (i cant remember the amount of degrees each mark is though)
and if it is cam timing then u gotta get cyl. # 1 to top dead center ( i usualy pull the spark plug and bump the engine til i feel teh compression against my finger, but that could be a little tricky casue the hole is deep on the KA) and then u gotta take the valve cover and timing chain covers off. then look at the timing chain and there will be 3 marks on it and one mark on each gear. 2 of the marks on the chain will be the same, these 2 should be at teh same place as the marks on the cam gears adn the other should match up with the gear that is below thoes. if not then rotate which ever one untill u got them all lined up. then jsut put everything back together! :coold: :hsdance: :coold:

"As far as timing goes, to start with you need a timing light, and a relatively dark area to work in. Hook up the light to the battery and clip the inductor on the #1 spark plug wire. Start the car, and point the light at the crank pully. You should see a series of marks on the pulley, mostly white, with one red one. If I'm correct, the red is 0, and the whites increment at 5 degrees. (with them being -5, 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20). You determine where you are by the little needle thing that sticks out over the pulley on the drivers side.
To adjust, you losen the two bolts on the distributor and twist the entire housing. When you twist the housing, you will see the marks on the pulley shift position, and you'll notice a change in idle. I set mine to 20 degrees, read somewhere that was default, but advance slowly and listen for pinging (I'm high altitude, so knock isn't so much a problem). Twist the housing slowly until the last mark lines up with the needle."
its for a KA but i think timing is pretty universal. since you have a SR check those links someone posted above for more info. i remember reading something about timing set automatically when you put something on ... ? forgot, heh.

download the fsm.
warm up car (2k rpm for 2 minutes)
let idle for 1 minute
turn car off
unplug tps
start car
race engine under no load up to about 3k three times
check timing with light (two methods to get a signal, spark wire in #1 cylinder or loop in back of valve cover)
adjust as needed by turning the cas
turn car off
plug in tps
should be set to where you set it.
