Searched for this issue but this is a peculiar one...

Basically turned on the engine today was fine. drove down the road, and was getting on the freeway and took it into neutral and I thought I left my foot on the gas and it started reving up to 4-5k... I turned the car off naturally.

So I've had iacv, maf, and air filter issues so I figured something went wrong with the throttle body cable being stuck open or the butterfly valve in the throttle body.

I took it to Ali at Machine Tune in placentia because I was very close by, and he said he hadn't seen sr's behave that way ever before. He was busy also so he couldn't take it apart just yet.

Background about what is wrong with the car. Maf wiring is a little shady, it is just electrical taped and uses connectors, so it could have to do with that. The air filter is pretty old and just last thursday I took it off to clean and spray air filter oil on it. The iacv has been cleaned with carb cleaner through the hole that the adjustment screw is. Before today I had had previous idle issues with it bogging out and dying so I've cleaned the maf sensor the air filter and iacv.

We checked the throttle cable and its not open, and there's no tension. The only thing I can think of is there being a whole somewhere where air is getting in to allow it to rev so high. Or that the screw for the butterfly valve busted off.

The only other thing is maybe the actual accelerator pedal itself, but idk anything about that. Maybe The same problem as the brake pedal bushing wearing out, causing the brakelights to stay on.

I don't know this happened literally 30 minutes ago. And it's raining right now so I just have it parked waiting for it to clear up before I go out there so making this post to just get some ideas.

little bit more info I'm thinking it's probably not anything with a sensor, because it should be more of a mechanical problem, because it's reving so high. It shouldn't have to do with a sensor being bad.

Check your tps, mine came loose once and pegged the limiter.

I'm guessing you have 89-90 chassis?

well i went out to check the tps, and just for shits and giggles I turned the car on again and now it's just reving at 1100. my throttle cable is actually a little loose, so idk why it was reving high.

the only thing i did was turn the adjustment screw on the iacv completely all the way down, and now it's fine but it should be idling lower. weird.

i was checking my accelerator pedal and the cable is loose also a little plastic piece broke off. same type of plastic piece that breaks off the brake pedal.

ok well it's fine now I guess my iacv was just adjusted really poorly and for some reason it was idling low since thursday but for some reason now it started idling high. i just screwed the screw completely down and now it's fine.

Swap your TB cable for the longer DOHC the SOHC are short usually doesn't provide enough slack specially if your trying to tuck the cable nicely. If you must use it make sure that the cable slack and angle is good enough so it doesn't have an issue returning as you let off the gas pedal.

How is this relavent?

It's very relevant..

Thought it was something different. Lol could have just said SOHC throttle cable and i wouldnt have asked.
Thanks
