Hi guys. I am looking to drop one of these engines in my car which is a 96 240sx s14. But I dont know which to get and i dont know what is the differance between the two. I heard that they will both fit in the s14 chassi, with no problem at all or very little moding for fitment, not like the s15 sr20det. But other then that the s14 is a little stronger by only 10 horse power compared to the s13 sr20det. I really dont know what to get. Please educate me please, what is the differance....=D...Thanks

Difference is 18 hp. And in stock trim, the S14 has more potential. With some bolt on mods and some boosting, the S14 T28 turbo will max out at about 300 hp or so. S13 T25 is about 260ish usually. The S14 motor is way more linear. From 1900 to 5900 rpm the intake cam is advanced 20 degrees in comparison to the exhaust cam. Also the T28 is ballbearing a spools super quick while still being bigger than S13.
So S13 suck right? Well S13 motors are cheaper by a good bit. Also, they have a high port head. At higher air flow and volume, the S13 head will impede flow less than S14/15 low port head, create less turbulence, produce better response and more horsepower. Whoa cool. But thats not till like 400-500hp. Haha.
Anyways, what are your ultimate goals? Daily driver? Maybe 300 hp? Get S14 motor. Track car? High horsepower numbers like 400+? get S13 motor.
Also, the S4 motor is definitely capable of producing just as much power, but eventually its strong points get eclipsed and you then have essentially 2 SRs, same horsepower (high, like 400+), same aftermarket turbos etc... one just has a different looking valve cover. Eventually the VTC is disabled for cams in the pursuit of no frills all out race power.
Also, the S14 motor has better oil pickup design. Well all 94+ engines have it. 91-93 SRs can starve more easily as a result of a bent oil pan.
The only Advantages of the s14 sr20det is that it has VVT and a bigger turbo basicly....if your looking to upgrade these in the long run i woudnt worry about gettin a s14...however its easier to work w/ the s14 sr20det in the s14....

the reason i went with the s13sr over the s14 sr in my s14 was simple $$
ive said it once and ill say it again, with the 1000.00 i saved i got my 3 inch apex n1USED), 3 inch greddy downpipe, walboro 255, spearco FMIC (used), nismo FPR, hks type R blow off valve, 2 electric fans, 4 quarts of synthetic oil, and k&n oil filter.

yeah it comes down to $$$$$$$, and if you plan on doing a turbo upgrade go with the s13 but if your going to keep it stock the s14 and also the s14 is a new motor, i have a s13 and my friend had a s14 , both motors were stock with the exception of bov, intercooler, exhaust and boost controller and when we raced he started pulling at the end of 3rd gear, vspec and t28........all depends on what you want the car to do, but sometimes you can find s13 sr for a really good deal, anyways good luck man

the only SR I know of is the one where I have to pay out of my ass for because of my driving record!
hehe. ok, on topic, I would buy the black top (S14) if you were only looking for arond 300hp + or - 50hp. If you want insane hp, get a redtop because you're going to be replacing a load of stuff to make insane power anyways.
drift? or drag? or auto-x, or street? plan it out. Don't just buy and mod as you go.

could not have said it better myself and dorifto nailed every aspect.
break it down simple , full race track engine? S13 Kouki Blacktop SR ,
street engine with some track time S14SR, lots of bottom end torque.

Got a lift all tools you can think of.i figured about 2 hours to get engine out then another 4 put it in and get eveything hooked up...take the time to do it not rush. then i got about 3 left for wiring IF i got proper diagrams/directions.
obviosly i dont expect to not have any minor problems but if worst comes to worst i should at least get engine in and all adjasent parts. plus dude i work with will be helping me. dont really see what hte big deal is .
not to brag or anything but it takes me 3 and a half hours to replace an auto trany in a 3.2TL or 3 hours do a clutch on an integra. done a clutch on my 240 ...never timed it but i was done before lunch. these are not really related much but i know what i am donig .... well at least half the time lol :blah:
