View Full Version : Some general info about the 240

Hey everyone I am a mr2 owner I have been thinking about looking into somthing different, and selling the mr2. Front wheel drive is not my thing when it comes to performance (my celica is for commuting)so Im very limited in a search for RWD cars.

Well I pretty much have the 240 (s14 locked in my sites) I have done all the research I can via the internet on engine swaps, turbo options and so fourth. Im pretty much concerned with the handling of the car since I have yet to drive one, they are pretty much the same in weight as my mr2 so Im sure the tossabiltiy will be nice with a very easy back end (the mr2 is very twitchy)

Well I have a few general questions, things I couldnt find on the net, what is the difference in trims on the 240, like SE, and what not, Im sure they are just options like sun roof and stuff but I would like to know what each trim includes.

Also I have been opting for a 97 because of the looks but is there any year I should get? I actually would like to just get a 1995 because of OBDI (obdII) is a bitch and like all cars in CA that started in 1996. If I get a 1995 is the headlight swap (and whatever else it includes) easy to do? cheap? Im not one for looks but those headlights are sweet. Also is there anything else the 1997 or any other year will benafit over the other?

Well guys sorry for such a long post but im eager to learn and get me a test drive in one of these cars...

thanx guys take care

the s14a se models have side skirts, tighter suspension, white face guages, 16in alloys, cd player, factory amps, fac. tweeters and 5 lug.. options are sunroof, lsd, abs... etc.

Well, I'm sure you know the engine specs by now. The s14 to s14a only changed things aesthetically, engine specs remain the same (dating back to the '91 model). I'm also sure you've noticed the 240sx is about the best handling car in its class.

The trim levels are more difficult to pin down. The only common change is the SE has a slightly stiffer suspension (I hope I'm thinking the right model/year here ), and had the options of ABS and a limited slip differential. If you're planning on doing your own suspension, it really doesn't matter which trim you get.

the conversion is bumper and fenders and lights and hood, not just lights, and the deck lid of the trunk is also a bit different. #### man that SW20 is a hella sweet car i dunno if i would rather have it or a 240, i guess it depends on how much money i had and what i planned on doing with the car. yeah the weight distribution is about the same and their weight is pretty similar, but the sw20 is also smaller, is it not? they're both pretty awesome cars, i would love to have an sw20 with a gracer kit, best part is you dont have to swap the engine to get a good 2.0 turbo, but you also have to pay more...what will you e selling yours for?

yea the mr2 is a bit smaller, actually in lenght its alot smaller, the Mr2 handles very very well, I have come to be a pretty good drive in this peice. Im just looking for something with a more controllable back end. The mr2 gets very twitch at high speeds and sometimes decidedes to slide out for no reason at all

I really need to get a drive in a 240 thats pretty much going to be the deciding factor, ohh I look forward to having a front engine car again, intercooling the mr2 isnt easy, and there is alot of stuff you have to put up with having a mid engine car, Im kinda looking for a 4 seater (even tho the seats will probably come out and im going to put a roll cage in hahaha...but at any rate, I love the looks of the 240, aftermarket seems strong I cant wait to have a front mount again...

I will most likely just turbo the 2.4 swapping the engine sounds nice, but the 2.4 liter will pull real nice with some boost, Ill be most likely using a EMS such as haltech or something along those lines, it depends on how far I want to take the car, streetability is really my concern so well see, If I do a swap I would really want to the inline six the 2.5 liter how much does the entire swap go for? I can insall it myself, 6 speed would be nice but im hearing that the tranni is weak?

I would guess the 6 speed would be expensive since its such a late model part

So how much will that front end swap go for? Im leaning towards a SE since the option of the LSD, but sunroof isnt somthing I want or care for

thanx for the info guys

well the rb25det is indeed pretty sweet, http://www.unstable-hybrids.com is a good place to start. as far as the front end, you will pay less to just get a 97-98 in the end, and you also get the more aggressive rear deck, and the 5-lug, slightly better stock suspension, better stock stereo. sure you'll probably change some of these out, but for just the front end and 5-lug its worth it. and you can always get rid of the OBD-II, im sure theres ways to convert it, i know you can with hondas, and if you get a swap, you have nothing to worry about there

what is the OBD-II?

OBDII is a annoying on board diagnostic system witch can be good, but for performance is pretty bad, instead of having 1 02 sensor you have 2, so there is one before the cat and one after the cat, this makes its kind of annoying to mod the car because of all the sensors and check codes you have to deal with.

oh i get it now........ thats gotta be restrictive.....

If you swap the RB engine into the 240 you're going to kill the handling. One of the best things about the 240 is the weight ratio. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's 51 / 49 . The RB will really throw that off.

For a full history of a lot of the topics you are wondering about, go do some reading on www.freshalloy.com Go to the last message board "best of 240sx." It will tell you a lot about some of the background info, what others who race the car have done, etc. Also in the regular 240 forum, there is are two guys in AZ pushing about 400 whp in KATs. There are also a few track day and club racers. It is a BIT of a serious forum, but the info is really technical and helpful.
