So I'm having a hard time deciding what brand and duration cams to run with either a gt2871r .86 or gt3071r .63 Anyone running these turbos I would like to know what cams you are running and what kind of power you made on them, and the drivability on the street thanks Ray.

I ran Brian Crower BC264 12mm lift and Tomei 256/11.5 in the same motor with no other changes and found almost no difference even after retuning for each. The 264s were a slightly lumpier idle and less efficient off throttle at low RPM.
The Tomei cams were affordable. My new build has HKS stage 3s since I am going big for that motor. I would suggest 256 or 260 duration. Don't get 272s because they will reduce responsiveness. 12mm or larger will require aftermarket springs and such, so if you go with the Tomei 11.5s you can stick with stock head parts and call it good.

Cool I understand what your saying I plan on running upgraded valve springs and retainers as well as rocker arm stoppers so a slighty bigger cam with 12mm lift is no problem for me I was looking at tomei 260s there right in the middle and there very cost effective compared to the other cams

I had Greddy valve springs/ti retainers as well, but elected for the 256/11.5 Tomei cams.

If I choose Tomei 256/256 poncam 11.5 lift do I need adjustable cam gear ?
complete stock sr20 by the way

JWT S4's. By far one of the best turbo cams you can buy. Well outperformed the BC 264's. Yes new they are more expensive than BC's but you get what you pay for. No need to mess with cam gears or any of that, toss them in and go.
I used them on my fwd sr20's and my buddies used them on their rwd sr powered 240's and absolutely love it. They will have by far the best overall gain everywhere in the powerband vs pretty much any cam on the market. I find it funny that a lot of the 240 guys dont know about them or use them alot. But yeah by far one of the best cams for the DET you can buy. Sound great, you can use stock springs and retainers and still rev to 8k rpm with no issues, no need to dial in with cam gears, and on a 2871 your looking at roughly 25-30whp more at lower boost levels and even more gains at higher boost levels. Thats what ive personally seen dynod vs stock cams. Ive seen gains as high as 45whp difference at around 20psi on a 2871r vs stock cams.
You can find them used or buy them new. If you buy them used, more than likely they will have the short dowel pin for the exhaust cam cam gear, all you have to do i swap it. If you buy them new, just tell jwt they are for rwd SR's and they will put the longer pin in the cam for you.

no need for aftermarket cam gears. If you want to have them anyway you can use Jim Wolf cam gears. They are good bang for the buck and are safe to use.

I have S14 SR20, 3071r .63 and use HKS 264 cams for both IN/EX. 350hp/292tq on 12lbs boost.
I wanted to get J3 or J4 but.. couldn't give up my VCT.

Thanks for your numbers. kind of gives me an idea I wish they had a cam thread on this forum to see what kind of numbers to expect with different brands and durations of cams that would be neat to see.

2871 .73AR 18psi BC264s, 350rwhp, heat soaked.
If you want quick spool and power til about 7k rpms, JWT S3 By far the best.

Then youve obviously never used S4's....N/A and Turbo S4's own S3's every way of the powerband. And s4's with a 2871 will hold power all the way to the rev limiter. Simple as that.

wont spool "quick" with .86 and S4.
I would personally recommend staying away from BC and go with either Tomei PONCAMS or JWT S3, S3HL or S4(in that order). all of these cams can be used without new valve springs.
from JWT: "S4 CAM SET SR20 BILLET 0.464" LIFT / 266 DEG.DUR. A LITTLE MORE POWER ABOVE 5500RPM THAN THE S3 CAMS, BUT A LITTLE LESS LOW END TORQUE."
OP have you looked at the http://zilvia.net/f/tech-talk/124925-gt2871-users-sr-motor.html
most would recommend if you are staying under 400hp get your T2 with a .64 housing(not.86)

Again take it from someone who has personally used s4's on both small turbos and big ones. You dont lose any spool time vs s3's. Trust me, nothing that is noticable. I think 1-3 whp under peak torque but spool time was almost dead on with s3's but after spooled the power was all s4's over s3's and holds power out longer.

I haven't looked at it yet but that should give me a better idea thanks!

Also I didn't ask for people to argue over cams saying "this cam is better than that cam" lets keep that to a minimum.

JWT S3 or S4 - HKS 264 - Tomei 260
The 3 best options for the SR20, anything else just doesn't cut the mustard.
I personally love the JWT cams. Stock valvetrain safe, so while more pricey to initially buy, they are cheaper (total) to run...plus they make more power under the curve and peak.
FWIW: I'm gonna be throwing my buddies S4 cams in my personal setup here come spring. I've run S3's in this car now for years, a great freakin cam and good spool...in fact there is not a darn thing wrong with them other than I'm thinking that more and more they do hinder the top end vs the S4's. Dont' get me wrong my setup has dynoed over 400whp on mulitple setups using S3's, but I think the S4 may do the trick to really comlete it...we'll see tho :D

How do S1 cams compare for turbo ka? These are what I happen to have but I might sell them.

JWT S4's all day, hands down the best sr20 cam. And no need to upgrade the valvetrain. I've had them in my car almost 3 years and beat the shit out of the rev limiter all the time.
Plus they idle awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_7peXDF_ps

I've never had S1's in a RWD car, but in FWD turbo cars they rock :D

One of the buddy's I was talking about :)
I talked him into the s4 cams and he never looked back.
This guy really does beat the shit out of his car and its always kept right on going. Now he can really feel how they respond on the s15 bb t28.

Totally safe and easy to install. Put them in like stock, and crank the wick up :D
Just make sure your tune is safe and you have the correct fueling and 400whp will be no sweat :D

lol, of course the s4's are good to 400+whp. Made 461whp on my DET on 24psi on a 60 trim t3 Garrett turbo, .81 turbine housing on an ebay tubular manifold. That was before swapping out the stock intake manifold for a nice aftermarket and Q45 TB, lets just say pump gas 19-20psi felt like 24psi did on the stock manifold. The setup went on later to make around 540-550whp on 30psi. No sweat.

Im sorta a noob with all this ....sorry but im just tryin to learn all i can ... But with the s4 cam would i need to upgrade the valves and springs? I have a bascially stock sr with a fmic 3in O2 and 3in all the way back straight pipe and aluinmum one piece driveshaft

I dont know how many times it has to be said.....Are you a noob at reading too? Its been said like 3 times in this thread that you dont need to upgrade your springs and retainers with jwt S4 cams. Drop in and go, 8k rev limiter if you want all day long and they wont float. They have a very very smooth lobe profile that allows for this on stock springs and retainers.
Jeeze.
