my friend just got his and we installed them on saturday during the 45 minutes we were supposed to be walking the course at autocross. everyone that saw them was impressed, as well as my friend who drove on them. my other friends (1 with an S13 and 1 with a B15) are now looking into getting them.... and i strongly encourage paying the extra for express shipping. shipping by boat sucks.

Still waiting on mine to get here but my friend payed the extra for fedex like a month ago and he loves them. Really nice quality, not a bad ride at all. Overall, well worth the price paid.

Ace did your friends pay extra to get them shipped from the boat to them or extra from the dealer to them? I should have shelled out the extra money..

They are like 670 shipped I thinkk. Any odd combo of spring rates 9/7 and 7/5 are the popular 240 ones. You have to pay extra for pillowball upper mounts, but I think that 670 price includes it (it's just off the top of my head). I should have gotten them, but oh well.

I was in on the original group buy which had pillow ball mounts included. It was $600 shipped for me. :) there is a threadf on NICO about the group buy. you could contact mark about selling you an extra set. The price will be higher though but still worth it in my opinion.

It's KSport coilovers.. same exact thing. Today is the last day to get in and pay.. it's $600 + $40 shipping + $80 for pillowball mounts. Subtract $20 for paying check/money order. If you are gonna pay the latter two, call them today to lock in at $700 shipped with PBM. Or call and pay credit or paypal for $720. If you wait until tomorrow (I think you have 6 more days before the order it placed) it's $100 extra for the late fee.

I ordered 9/7 on Friday. Ace has the D2 (as I said.. same thing, same company, same manufacturer.. EXACT SAME) with 9/7 and his reviews went along the lines of "They are very comfortable with these spring rates.. far from teeth chattering" and "But, if a mouse took a shit on the road and you ran over it, you'd know exactly what it had for dinner."
So anyway, I ordered the K-Sport coilovers. Who did say "You get what you paid for?" They have a really good reputation (d2/ksport) in Japan, and have *just* come over to the states. They retail for $1100, and this is going to be the last groupbuy for $600 on these, since d2/ksport has authorized distributors and a repair facility in the US now.

Most lower priced tien come in 5/4. For an s13, 7/5 is what's recommended by K-Sport.. 8/6 for S14.

Tell him to turn up the dampening.... with the 9/7's on at least a dampening level of 24 (4 full turns from soft) is pretty good. I'm running 5.5 turns in front, 5 in rear. Feels very well damped.
Also, after playing around with the shocks for a bit, I don't think they'll handle much over 11's. I think 11's would work, though.

i wouldn't recommend over 11.... but it doesn't mean it won't work. I still haven't played around with the settings much, and haven't tried full stiff at all, actually. I suppose you might be able to get higher, but since I'm almost at max damping, I don't think anything over 11 would be worth it.
However, these are rebuildable, so who knows.... maybe the valving can be changed.

I'm running d2's with 7/5 springs. I've got no complaints other than the camberplates won' let you go with to much - camber.
They are very stiff and the car handles well, not too bouncy, but that may be because of my 55 series sidewalls. Sittign this low upfront isn't the greatest idea around here, i'm constantly bottoming out on the top of the wheel well when goign over big bumps at speed.
To drop the rear that low, i had to get rid of the preload, actually, if i pull out my rears, the top spring perch will be 3/4" above the spring, so if i go over train tracks real fact, the rears are noisey.
Hope i answered the questions, anymore lemme know

I've got D2 in mine with 9/7 recently.. I've been playing around with damping, but it seems full hard seems to work best.. otherwise it's a bit bouncy. Anyone else experiencing this? I actually wish the ride was stiffer, but it handles pretty good.. I've got 16"/55 series tires as well so I'm sure that's a lot of it. Does it wear out the dampers faster at full hardness?

07-12-2004, 03:35 PM
I've got 9/7 d2's on my s14 and even on the first dampener setting i couldn't say they were bouncy.
To me the way the car rides with these things is almost a direct reflection of the road surface. If the road is wavy the car fallows them.
I couldn't imagine running anything stiffer, they hardly compress as it is. :eek3d:
true... I got mine too and they do the same thing..
I do find them noisy though...
the bounciness isnt from the stiffness..it's the way the shock is valved...bump vs rebound. So just cause it follows the road and feels stiff doesnt mean it's too stiff. It could be the bump is too stiff but the rebound isnt. Same as when you say they hardly compress...that's bump valving. Also there's high speed, mid, and low speed characteristics. Perks to buying a quality setup is you get ride comfort plus performance. Thats why people say dont run high spring rates with D2's cause the shock dont really work right with them. I would run 7/6 or 6/5 if i bought a set.
And what's your definition of high springs rates? My definition is something around 12/10... But that's just me. I currently have 7/5 and plan on going 9/7 (have the springs at my place)

They bounce with 9/7 rates, especially on uneven lots. I co-drove Ace's car @ an autocross last weekend...his D2s were set to 5.5 front, 5 rear, and I set mine to full dampening all around. We both run 9/7 and its a noticeable less amount of bounce with full dampening, but I still feel like I lose the rear end alot on uneven surfaces. Plus my ass hurts. :axe: I'm gonna call Mark and see how much rebuilding/revalving is gonna run. If I'm running full dampening now, when the start to wear, its gonna be reallllllly underdampened.

Wasn't recommended spring rates for the D2s 9/5? This seems like a odd combination, but I think I saw that somewhere..
Tires make a world of a difference in ride quality and perceived stiffness, and I've driven on both 40 series and 55 series on the same suspension and the ride comfort is night and day.. I think the discrepencies are probably due to sidewall stiffness. I know this won't effect the bounciness much.. but just talking about the ride quality.
In any case, 9/7 at full damping is pretty good, just wondering if that'll wear them out faster or not. Maybe sway bars would help settle some of the bounciness? Do you guys have them? That'll be next on the list..
And what's your definition of high springs rates? My definition is something around 12/10... But that's just me. I currently have 7/5 and plan on going 9/7 (have the springs at my place)
My definition of high spring rates is between 10 and 14Kg/mm
BUt that wasnt my point. I was saying high spring rates as in too high for D2's. So it depends on the shock.
In comparison, the lowest end teins, (the HA's which i have) you can get for about 1100 bucks and they feel great and they can be rebuilt in the USA. 8/6 rates and they are JdM TytE yO

All shocks will wear through use. Faster w/ the high rates? Probably. Adjustable shocks were first invented for the purpose of being able to retain dampening characteristics after the shock wears out. Its only a matter till you'll be underdampened if you run out of ability to adjust stiffer.

Sounds to me like the bound, and rebound damping are poorly setup for the spring rates you guys are running. 9/7 is high on the street, not high for track, but probably very nice.
Springs absorb irregularities, and mangae sway. Dampers manage ocilation in all modes of spring operation. It takes an observent, and experienced driver to be able to detect small nuances with how the dampers are controlling occilation.
If the ass is skipping out around a corner, then the damping in the rear is set too high. The springs bound action is being restricted by the damper, and so the tire, and rear of the car is literally launched off the bump, and sent skipping across the pavement. Having too high of a spring rate can do this as well.
If your auto-xing on bumpy parking lots, I would recommend much lower spring rates than 9/7. If your racing around professionaly maintained private road courses, even higher COULD be warranted depending on your tire choise.
Well... all our Auto-X events are on private road courses / tracks... so It justifies me wanting 9/7. :) But 7/5 does wonders. I thought it would be too soft compared to my AGX + GC combo (7.5/6.9) but isn't.

for street use and I mean ONLY street use for now, would the 9/7 combo be too much on the shocks? Since I wont be seeing any track time for a few months I was thinking of swapping in my 7/5 combo instead ... what are your thoughts?

Correct me if i'm wrong.
too stiff of rebound makes it so the damper is restricting the rebound action of the spring when it wants to open up to make contact with the ground on a concave area on the road, making it skip. If it's convex then the stiff bound would make you skip. Or when you smoke to much crack you come up with wierd theories.

I ordered 7/5 k-sports for my s14 having street use in mind. I'll let you know how it is when I get them. So far I have had tein HE's and it was a bit too much for my tastes. If everything doesn't work out the way I want it to I'm just going to go with Tein Flex. I don't mind trying different suspension setups. I don't know anyone else at all in my area with any 240's so I have to go by word of mouth and trial and error.

7/5 is better for street... 9/7 is too much for bumpy roads.

depends on the shocks. you can have good shocks feeling better with 9/7 than D2's with 7/5
talking about the D2's here...
ya ya i'm just being a post whore.

You still post some good information tid-bits.
Indeed, my 7/5 D2s feel stiffer that my 7.5/7 on my AGX... ;)
But, that's according to butt springometer
if you guys are still interested in these, i work closely with mark and have been selling the D2's for a few months.
i dont have any in stock right now, but i know there is one S13 set and 1 S14 set in the warehouse.
i run 7/5 and i love them, as mentioned here, far better than the AGX's with any spring.

If the ass is skipping out around a corner, then the damping in the rear is set too high. The springs bound action is being restricted by the damper, and so the tire, and rear of the car is literally launched off the bump, and sent skipping across the pavement. Having too high of a spring rate can do this as well.
Wouldn't underdampening cause similar effects? If you get the rear to oscillate, you're effectively loading and unloading the rear tires in a harmonic wave. Yes, the tires are still touching the ground (versus when overdampened, they can leave the ground), but the grip doesn't exist for you to put down power, or to corner without the ass-end poking its head out.
