Ok well i had the car running ok of and on for a few weeks now. Well the timing guides broke so i changed them. Then this rattle started. It starts at 3000rpm and doesn't go away unless you let off the pedal. It also doesn't happen downshifting.

So i pull the valve cover and check the chain, seems loose. So i figure it needs a changin. I order and install new chain and tensioner. Button it all back up and it's still there.

So i figure maybe it's an idler pulley, disconnect the belt and it still does it. I think it's in the head, but i've checked the lifters for side to side movement.

Any ideas? I'm getting real fed up, the nice weather is finnaly here and i want to get the car running good so i'm not constantly in the garage trying to fix it.

Thanks.

Have you checked the catalytic converter to see if the honeycomb inside hasn't seperated from the cat? Crawl underneath the car & bang on the cat with your hand. See if you can hear any rattling sound. If you do, then the honeycomb has seperated from the cat...not good!! Also check the bolts to the metal plates that cover both the exhaust manifold & the catalytic converter. It's possible one of the bolts could have snapped off & the metal plate is causing all the rattling sound.
Hope this helps...good luck.

hmm, maybe loose exhast mani, i was planning on removing it today...the only emmissions equpiment on the car right now is the carbon canister and the thing in the intake.

might be exhaust, i guess i'll just run it without the header to see if it still makes the noise...the neighbours will be happy.

i believe 240sx.org has a very good faq about SOHC timing chain rattle. check it out if you haven't yet.

it can't be chain rattle, I just replaced, slackside and tension side guides, tensioner, and chain. there is nothing left to replace for timing. I'll look anyways, thanks for the idea.

Anyone know if i can cut open a spare valve cover, and run the motoro for a few min to see if it's the lifters banging?

Also could the rattle be a bad ring? i noticed when i pulled the manifold, #2 had some oil in it, it was never like that before.

Keep tossing out ideas, i think i'm going to pull the insurance and keep driving my jetta, as much as it sucks.

Hi

My KA24E would get a rattle at 2750 rpm right on the dot, on both accel and decel. It would go away by 3000 (or 2500), so I am guessing it was that exhaust manifold heat shield.

When the radiator hose blew, the car would make a rattling anytime I pressed the gas. After replacing the hose and radiator, it still made a slight rattling during idle, but for some reason I think it was air in the cooling system. As soon as I squeezed the hoses and topped off the water, the noise went away. If you haven't already, you might try checking your coolant levels?
