Hello, I'm currently looking to purchase a 240sx. A friend i went to high school with has a 1991 s13 hatch, It's 5 speed has ac/ps all manual locks/windows, and no sun roof. Currently the car has 180k miles everything on the car is good, except that he says sometimes it will randomly die while driving then just start right back up. I was thinking the alternator, but im not really sure. I offered him 900 and he said he would take that. Would this be a good price? is it even worth it with the problem going on? I'm a college student looking for a realible cheap car, and i thought was better place to ask then this forum! so please help me out guys.

you kinda answered it yourself there. your looking for a RELIABLE cheap car, yet this car shuts off randomly.... come on man. but if your gonna build up as a project then it may be worth it depending on what the issue actually is. fuel pump maybe? some one with more experince will chime in.

Sounds like a freakin' steal. Probably something stupid and easy to fix anyway. How's the paint/body? Because if you don't buy it, I'd like to.

Let me clear some things up, I have money to buy a more expensive car, but I'm looking for a cheap car to fix up. He's owned this car for years, so I know that it's been taken care of. It's in great condition, no body work or paint needed. The only thing keeping me from buying it now is the fact that it shuts down randomly. So, basically I just need advice from you guys as to what the problem could be and how expensive would it be to fix the issue?

Could be any number of things. Buy the car, do some basic troubleshooting / searching.

You better search. Don't even think about making a thread without searching.

And if you're stumped, then you can come here, give us more information, and we'll do our best to help.

2 of the s13s that I have owned have had that same random shutoff problem and both times it was due to a bad fuel bump. Buy the car and replace the fuel pump and fuel filter. There is a good chance that will take care of the problem. Just get the car, it seems like what you are looking for and if for some reason you can't get it running right you could always sell it for more then you paid for it since there is a good market for clean s13s.

my cousin's 91 hatch has the same problem. car dies randomly from 10 to 45 minutes mark but it wouldn't start right up. we tried by changing ecu, ignition coil, ignition module, and coolant sensor with no luck!

after research....research.....research
after diagnosed....diagnosed....diagnosed.....

put new distributor in! BOOM! drove the car for 4 hours! car didn't die like it used to.
it's been almost 2 weeks and the car runs fine without any issue.

hope this will help :D
