Hey Zilvia, I'm Jake and I'm probably going to blow your mind here a little bit.
Here's me and the recently acquired 240sx's....
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8235/8425436045_e2f6a1521c_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tougephoto/8425436045/)

I'm a bit different from your typical zilvia user as you can see from the picture posted above. I don't let anything hold me back, I do what I want... and its a lot of fun. I love cars, and have a passion towards photography. If you're looking for a content deep build, I hope this will be it. I'm a very laid back dude, social, always down to meet new people with similar interests.
Anyway, to get the ball rolling I traded this 95 Miata for the white 89 240sx hatchback with a redtop SR20 motor.

I wanted a car with some power, a bit easier to slide then my NA anemic miata.
(When it was stock, first gear is still fun)
SpnH2cHrY0I
Slightly regretting it now, I've put very few miles on the 240sx and its running like garbage, actually not running at all at the moment. The fuel pump isn't priming, I think its the wiring to the relay.
Along with the issues with the cars fuel pump, I'm also having to deal with blown/broken JIC coilovers, and a SR motor that is running very rich (well when it was running). I feel I got the bad end of the trade, but the guys drove up from St. Louis and I felt obligated to trade. Can't take it back, so might as well make the best of what I have.
Enough Rambling. I introduce you, zilvia, to the great white buffalo.
Day of the trade.

Cool s13!
Not sure exactly what you mean, it was shot with a T2i, and a Tamron 10-24mm. Basic vignette, contrast adjustment. I'm just that small of a dude.
So, the white hatch has Busted/blown Jic's on it right now. I don't have the cash to be rebuilding them quite yet. I was looking for a lightly used set of Megans or something to get by on and I was contacted by a rando on craigslist offering this entire running 5spd swapped 94 vert for $800! It was on Megan coils, and the under chassis was mint. Went to Milwaukee and picked it up, drove it 1.5 hours back to Oshkosh without an issue.
I introduce you all to Old Gregg, Just one big downstairs mixup.

Thats almost an understatement hahaha.
Look how gross this thing is. Just bought a shop vac to begin the cleaning, interior paint (floors), and I'll be installing the new seat, and pedal extension setup once its clean in there.

Its salvageable for sure. Will make for a interesting daily come spring. Aero, wheels from the white car. And I'm thinking of painting it black. Not 100% sure on the color yet.
Regardless, despite its looks its a lot of fun. Drives decent. Hard to turn with no power steering. That will be re-installed soon.
Let my roommate take it out in the snow a bit ago. Welded FTW? hahaha.

Lots of love in this thread, I like that.
Time to start dealing with Old Gregg. My friends are telling me to take the coilovers off of it and sell it for profit to use on the white car. But I want to make this car into a decent DD. It drives decent, just needs clean up and paint (and aero)
What do you guys think, worth keeping or sell. I want to keep, I'm just curious what you all would do.

Its been a minute, time to update.
The cold weather has been preventing me to work here in WI. I recently sealed off my garage and got a heater, so its time to pick up the pace.

Really? I wonder what I was doing down there. I take the hatch on trips often, or well.... I did.
Poor Poopy (my hatchback) popped a brake line and made its way into a pole a few weeks back during a snow storm. It did some damage. It was the cars last nail in the coffin, I think its time to find a new shell!

Been delayed on spraying the car, went to bondo put the door dings and didn't mix it correctly. So now its sitting there half dry and im not sure what to do, it doesn't dry anymore and its not dry enough to sand. I've tried the heat gun everything. It just stays tacky. I have no clue what to do or how to remove it. Might resort to the wire wheel.
Interior is coming along, installing my pedal setup.

Paint job looks pretty good for 1st time. I have a body shop. Did you lay a slight base coat before running it on thicker the second time?
I always lay a light coat and it looks like a rattle can. Than i hit it and lay down a solid coat
JustTouge
04-02-2013, 06:48 AM
I did a similar process. Light first coat, heavy second. I did it in my small ass garage, with no ventilation. By the end of the first coat my brain was in its own world after breathing in all the fumes. I hustled the second coat on before I passed out and died in there.
It has runs, and some texture. But for the first time painting, I'm satisfied. The wet sanding and polishing should help a lot.

Plan on doing it this weekend when I have the time to do it all at once.
Have any recommendation on what grit to start with for the runs? I was thinking 800 grit wet sand and move up.
Sansone
04-04-2013, 09:59 PM
Both cars look great dude!
start with 1200 grit i would say, and sand all the car up to 2000-3000... you dont wanna eat too much of the paint since you dont have many layers... there are some real soft sanding discs for polishing, that are almost like fabric, they have a foam backing and they come at 2000 to 4000 grit, if you use a DA sander/polisher, you ll be done in no time for big areas ... then polish...but im slightly afraid, since you only shot 1 light and 1 heavy coat, it might be too thin. well, worst case, you just might repaint it!
Driftwire
04-05-2013, 05:15 AM
Depends on how bad the runs are.. You could use 800 and move up. If their real subtle i would just start at 1200 and youll have more room to play with on the paint before you go to deep into it.
Smartone
04-05-2013, 04:33 PM
You could also try something like this for the runs, Hot or Not? Run Razor | Toolmonger (http://toolmonger.com/2008/07/02/hot-or-not-run-razor/). it will help you not eat through the clear coat.

Nice build, been following it since you started.
Can you make a parts list/equipment list of what you used to paint the car?
Also how long did it take to do the paint?
Looking for a response like
"sanding took me like 4 hours, layed on the first light coat, let it dry for about 30 minutes, then did the heavy coat and sanded the bad spots. Total time around 8 hours Just for the exterior"

Sanding through the layers of shit green, and pink took a lot of time. - Maybe 6 hours using a orbital and 150-220 grit.
I then primed any areas that were bare metal.
Finished sanding the car with 320 grit then a round with 400 grit.
Washed it.
Washed it again.
Poured a 4-1 ratio of the cheapest enamel and hardener at automotive supply. Cost $129 and I still have enough left to paint another car.
I used a harbor freight gun shown in the pictures on the last page. It was junk. I would invest in a good gun next time for sure.
Sprayed 2 thick coats. 15 minutes in between. Let it dry two days in my cold ass garage.
do you have better details on how you removed the top?? i need to repair a few rusted areas around the top trim.
I never removed the whole top. Just the trim around the top, undo the screws from inside the trunk to get it off. I also pulled the vinyl cover that covers the suspension top hats in the rear.

Long awaited updates...
In regards to the 240sx, not much progress has been made. Just a lot of frustration.
I had the car trailered away to a buddys shop about 40 minutes away, seen in the pictures above. I took it there in hopes of his master mechanic would be diving into my wiring issues that I couldn't solve.
The car just sat there. Nothing progressed. I was really let down.

After two months of it sitting I decided it was time to move it. I felt like there wasn't another option, nothing was getting done. I had another friend offer his help, and he happens to have a few 240sx's himself. I knew we would be getting some work done if I could get it to this other shop located 20 miles away.
I had to drive this pile of junk those 20 miles, and lemme tell you... It was downright scary. I really got hosed on this car, the suspension is so broken... "Jic coilovers" that try and bounce you off the road because they are so blown. Aside from the scary suspension, the motor was misfiring and popping... and the low oil pressure light was on.
I kept driving.
I made it to the shop, and work began.

IMG_0082 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tougephoto/9268768477/) by Touge Photo (http://www.flickr.com/people/tougephoto/), on Flickr
Inspected the oil pan.
http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2806/9271550926_c1c794d077_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tougephoto/9271550926/)
IMG_0083 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tougephoto/9271550926/) by Touge Photo (http://www.flickr.com/people/tougephoto/), on Flickr
And found this.... Hence the low oil pressure.
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3798/9271549700_3692f4bf9f_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tougephoto/9271549700/)
IMG_0092 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tougephoto/9271549700/) by Touge Photo (http://www.flickr.com/people/tougephoto/), on Flickr
And that is where the 240sx sits, all of that progress was made months ago. Its sitting currently waiting for a new turbo, and diagnosing of the misfire issue.
Aside from the 240sx, my daily driver civic was on its last legs. The frame had been twisted when it lost brakes and slid into a pole over winter. I drove this thing dog tracking for weeks to campus and back.

IMG_8410 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tougephoto/8639863627/) by Touge Photo (http://www.flickr.com/people/tougephoto/), on Flickr
I still had a decent amount of profit sitting around from selling Greg (the 240sx convertible), So I went and bought this new replacement daily driver.

Dude- this thread has been awesome fun to read... and a lot of great work to boot!
BTW- If I had a dollar for every time I wished I was your size when leaning over my hood; I'd have as much cash laying on my floor as you & the other two triplets did in that one pic haha!
Sorry you got stuck with that POS white hatch. Sucks you prolly didn't know anyone else here in St. Louis to confer with before doing that deal... That car had been to hell and back; typical for that kind of car in this area. You definitely got the short end of the stick (sorry, couldn't resist lol).
Keep it up man!
More videos you say? Here you go, I deliver.

I've been rushing through projects and documenting a lot less lately, its no good. Once I start wrenching on the 240sx again I'll get a bit more in depth with the build. Hopefully the 240sx work will resume tomorrow! Headed in the morning to scope out a few replacement turbos in the Chicago area. Snag one up, bring it home, and install.
In a dream world I'd like to drive it on Sunday.
Here are a few pictures of the finished Miata for anyone interested.
