View Full Version : 89 Hatch Build-$300 shell to clean daily

Well, I figured I would throw my build out there and see what every body thinks.
First up I guess I should give the story of this car. I got this car in December 2011. This is my 5th 240 so I am not new to the game. I found the car while scouring craigslist for a shell to turn into a drift project since my s14 that I was using at the time was getting a little too nice to risk crashing at the track. I got it from some Honda kid who had bought it to drive while he did a turbo setup on his ek but had blown the engine while attempting some "mad tyte" drifts. The shell seemed pretty nice when I went to check it out (bone stock other then an eBay exhaust) and the kid still had the transmission and everything else to go with it so I gave him $300 bones and put it on the trailer.
The car had a very complete interior with an uncracked dash but the previous owner had stored it with the windows down for some reason so it had a lot of dirt and mold on everything. The first thing I did was remove pretty much everything and shampoo all the mold out then I rolled the windows up and got it ready for storage.
Only pic I have of the interior, this is after I did some work to it. Blue interior FTW!

I lost the original pics from when I got it home (more on that later) but this is about how the car looked when I got it back since the only thing done for these was a motor and a non rusted out hatch.

http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0044_zps7adc1680.jpg
The car sat like that for awhile since drift season was about over when I got it and I wasn't really in a big hurry to do anything with it. Then fast forward to May 2012 and this happened to my s14.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0032_zps23a1c4e0.jpg
I basically got rear ended by some dude who was texting and was sandwiched between him and a truck. I was fine (Bride seat ftw!) but my s14 was destroyed along with pretty much everything I owned since I was moving back home from school for the summer and everything was in the trunk.
I ended up getting a lot more insurance money then I thought and they let me keep the car (they even towed it 200 miles to my house for free). I was planning to use the money for a down payment on a FR-S but the rational side of me kicked in so I used it to pay off some of my student loans.
So now with no car and almost no money, I turned to the s13 shell that was sitting neglected in my yard. I needed a motor in a hurry so I went out and bought a $100 single cam from a guy on a local 240 forum and swapped it in. I went with the single cam because everything needed for that motor came with the car and because the ka24de in my s14 was in questionable shape after the accident.
Motor in
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0053_zpsd59f2a3f.jpg
After I got the car running I swapped all the goodies that I could over from my s14 to get the car ready for the upcoming drift season.
Parts swapped over:
OS Giken 2-way diff
Bride seat and rail
Griproyal steering wheel (best wheel ever)
SPEC lightweight flywheel
B&M shifter
Tien tie rods with rack spacer
I also pulled my adjustable Rucas, tension, traction, toe rods and subframe spacers but I was sick of working on the car at this point so I didn't bother putting them on until later.
All I needed was coils and since the Super Drifts from the s14 wouldn't work I traded them to a local 240 guy who ordered some s13 EMUSA coils for his s14 by mistake. I know what you are thinking and I was fully aware that they were $450 eBay coils but they were new and I was getting desperate plus the Tien rears needed a rebuild so I justified the trade that way. Here are what they looked like.

Getting the car ready for install. I'm sure every 240 owner is familiar with this sight.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0048_zpsc60087b7.jpg
The first thing that I noticed about the EMUSA coilovers was that the bracket that is supposed to hold the brake line is welded on upside down. I just laughed at the Chinese quality control and moved on with the install, but here is a pic for lolz.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0045_zpsb30de715.jpg
The rest of the install went pretty smooth except for one of the front studs breaking while I was tightening it down. Seriously the metal they used for the studs is so crappy that it simply broke, I didn't cross thread it or anything and this was before it even got to the bottom. Since this made me uneasy I went to the hardware store and bought some grade 8 bolts and replaced the studs with those. Also I noticed that the top hats were not torqued down so I torqued them to Nissan spec.
Some pics of the install

http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0049_zps1fa381ec.jpg
And the car after
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0056_zps43bb6577.jpg
Notes on the EMUSA coilovers:
-They are very cheaply made but the quality seems to be on par with every other eBay coilover.
-They do not go nearly low enough without removing locking collars/flipping the bracket and drooping the rears. The pic above is as low as they go without removing collars and proper preload.
-The ride quality on them is actually fantastic. I have owned/driven on alot of high end coilovers and I have to say that the ride quality of these is just as good, if not better then more expensive brands.
-They seem to be pretty durable, I have had them since last May and they haven't blown or started leaking yet (knock on wood). That is with daily driving and several track days
Anyway back to the build. After the coilovers went on I pulled it of the garage and took it to Maaco for some paint. I've had them paint several of my cars in the past and have always been impressed, just remember that you should do your own body/prep work before you take it. I filled in all the major dents in the car before taking it. For $350 you can't beat a Maaco job, the car was one color again and looking great!
Some pics after paint. I just had it resprayed the stock color which was KG1.

http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0080_zpsa75ff045.jpg
About a week after paint, I took it to its first drift day (no pics sorry). The car did great at the event but on the way home the oil pressure light started flickering on and off and I could hear a distinct rattling sound. I've had alot of experience with single cams before so I immediately knew that the timing guide had broke. The previous owner told me that it had a metal guide installed but I guess he lied. Sucks because it would have saved me a lot of work if I had known.
Anyway I decided to pull the motor again since the throwout bearing was going bad and it would be easier to just yank the whole thing.
Motor back out.

Motor back in.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0116_zpsb98e6f59.jpg
Once it was running again it stayed like this for a while.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0194_zps8bc434b0.jpg
That was partly because I had just picked up a new project, an 89 seafoam green/gray coupe! I have always wanted a two tone so when I saw this for $600 I couldn't pass it up.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0181_zps7609ac9e.jpg
Then last month I decided that the hatch needed some love in the way of some wheels and more low. So I tyred up some Square g6 wheels that I had been sitting on for a while and prepped the car for lowness.
Harnesses tucked

http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0275_zps913b6fb3.jpg
Then I removed the locking collars from the coils, flipped the front brackets, drooped the rears (not too happy about the droop) and put the wheels on. I also finally put my rear suspension arms on so I could play with the camber/ fix the alignment.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0283_zps269ff177.jpg
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0282_zps4f29ab62.jpg
Played around with instragram lol
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0293_zpsc6eef17f.jpg
The car came out looking a lot better then I expected. I would have liked to go a little lower but the coils are completely maxed out and there is nothing else I can do for now. It also could use some 5mm spacers in the front but I'll wait until I'm ready to put my z breaks on for those.
That's about how the car is going to sit for a while since I'm back at school. No major plans other then to install my jdm amber/clear signal lights and chuki sidskirts when they come in.
Here's a pic of the car from yesterday, I hate winter lol.

Thanks! I'm pretty pleased with how its coming along.
good start, sorry to hear about your s14 :(
Thanks, yeah I was pretty bummed about the s14 but it was kinda a blessing in disguise. The s14 chassis was rusting out and was kind of beat from years of drifting but I was in the process of bringing it back. I actually ended up making money off the insurance and got to keep my parts so it all worked out.
Whats the plan for the two tone?
The two tone is apart right now and currently undergoing a full on restoration. I'm keeping it fairly simple, just plan on cleaning it up, a silvia front, fresh paint (stock color) and good stance. I'm rebuilding the stock ka right now but I haven't really decided on a motor yet. I'm probably going to do a Sohc-T or a Ca18 though since those are the only two 240 motors I haven't really worked with and I want to do something new. I also have some some old 17" bbs rs wheels that I'm probably going to have re-lipped and put on if I ever get around to it. I'll make a separate build thread for it once some real progress has been made but that probably won't be until late summer/early winter.

Thanks! Yeah, this whole build was pretty much financed from parting out my s14. I probably made a extra $1500. I could of made more but I wanted to move parts fast and help out the local 240 community so I sold everything super cheap. There was literally nothing left of the car. Here is a pic from the day I took it to the recyclers. I see people with parts from it all the time lol.

Thanks dude! Maaco is where its at. A lot of people talk bad about them but its hard to beat the value. They do a really good job for the price, besides its a 20 year old 240 that gets tracked/beaten on regularly not a show car.
I'm probably going to do the swap sometime around late May or early June since I'll be out of school (Woo! Last semester) and will have more time to work on it. I'm not really in a huge hurry since the SOHC is running great right now.

I'm also leaning toward the CA, just from a reliability standpoint.
Hey man awesome build so far by removing collars and flipping the brackets can you show us a picture?
I don't have a picture of it right now because its cold out and I'm too lazy to take my wheel off but what I mean when I say flip the bracket is to take the lower bracket on the coilover (the one that bolts to the knuckle) and turn it upside down. This will give you another inch of lowness on most coils. The lower bracket is not removable on struts and some coilovers though. You also cannot flip the rear brackets but rear coilovers usually have enough adjustment (if you droop them) to match the fronts.
As for the locking collars, I just mean remove the ones that you don't need. If your coilovers are set to max low then you will have some (usually 2) locking collars that are not doing anything and keep you from going lower since they take up space. Just leave the one that holds up the spring and remove the rest. You can just spin them off when you have the lower bracket off. Here is a picture of the collars after I removed them.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0313_zps4c1da2b1.jpg
Let me know if that helps. If you are still confused I could probably go out and take a picture.

Also figured I would do a small update.
This was the scene about 100 feet from my bottom floor apartment the other day.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0298_zpsa1f98eab.jpg
Thankfully the water receded before it made it to my place but we still can't use the water and the power is patchy so I just decided to go back home for the weekend. I also had some small parts for the car come in on Friday that I wanted to install.
What parts you ask? Well my JDM turn signals finally came in! Seriously these things have been on backorder for months. If you want a set for your car I suggest you order them from Courtesy Nissan or Nissan Race Shop soon since they have a very limited supply before they are backordered again. Here is a pic of them in all of their brand new oem Nissan glory.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0302_zpse885cc31.jpg
And installed on the car.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0309_zpsac247921.jpg
I thought that it was going to be a super easy install when I went to put them on last night but I ended up having to drill the old lights out since the screws were rusted into the mounts. Luckily I was able to get the old lights out without damaging them and the JDM lights came with new hardware. It was still a pain though lol.
I also got some cupholders! I got them from a member on here and they work great. I'm stoked because the lack of cupholders is something that always pissed me off about 240s. Here is what they look like installed.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0306_zps45881d0b.jpg
I also figured that I would post up a interior shot since this thread is lacking one. It looks about the same as everybody's lol.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0307_zps4420b7c4.jpg

Haha, I was waiting for for someone to notice that. The car actually has some pretty bad damage to that part of the chassis. I think someone rear-ended someone or hit something at some point and it was never properly repaired. I assume that's why the car had the white body panels in those places when I bought it. I could fix it myself but it is just more work then I care to do to this car. That's the main reason this is my drift car/daily beater and the two tone is the one that I'm turning into my "nice" car.

Don't worry man, its not a sore subject. These are the only pictures I can find of that car since all of mine were on my old computer (along with the pictures of when I got the hatch) that was destroyed in the accident. It was nothing special but it was pretty good at going sideways:p.

So I haven't updated this in awhile but I have made a good bit of progress on the car so I guess I'll just pick up where I left off.
First off, my chuki sideskirts finally came in! The car looks awesome with them, just need to have them painted. I still need to source some type X valances and taillights before then though so I can have it all painted in one go.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0432_zps8d072b92.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0432_zps8d072b92.jpg.html)
The car remained pretty much the same until the end of drift season. I packed it up and ran Drift Valley V with it. This was the first Drift Valley event that I went to and it was a blast. The lines were short and I swear I must have hot lapped the car for over a hour. As a result of me having too much fun the rings decided to let go and I started burning a ton of oil on the way home, the old Ka had finally crapped out on me :(
Packed up and ready for the event, it amazes me how much you can fit into a hatch lol.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0440_zps7b910ab3.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0440_zps7b910ab3.jpg.html)
Some go pro footage from the event, I think there are two runs on the video. Not my best runs but I forgot to charge my go pro so its pretty much all I have. Also I was too lazy to edit it but you can just skip to the drifting.
http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/GOPR0125_zps2f25641e.mp4.html
So after the event I decided to pull the motor and go in another direction since I had sold my SR awhile back to a friend. Another friend had given me the low mileage KA from his 97 and I had a T25 setup that I had pieced together a few years back for my s14 laying around so I decided to use it.

And dropped it in!

That's about where I'm at right now since I got sidetracked by some other projects (more on those later) but I should have it finished and tuned before the March Drift Nirvana event.
Just for fun here are a few random shots I found of the car. One is from a 240 cruise I went on with some other local dudes a few months back and I don't remember where the other one is from but I like it haha.

I had been using the two-tone as a daily for awhile so progress has been super slow but I figured I would give an update.
First up I got a awesome deal on a Silvia front that I couldn't pass up. It also was a great way to get rid of the giant hole in the stock piggy bumper from the previous owner rear-ending a trailer hitch.

I also scored a great deal on some Battle Version tension rods so those went on.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0533_zps66b01087.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0533_zps66b01087.jpg.html)

Ended up doing rear suspension and installing some Silk Road coils while I was at it. The Silk Roads are old but are still in fantastic shape and I love the way the ride, I don't think I'll ever get rid of them lol.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0539_zpsfc5c914f.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0539_zpsfc5c914f.jpg.html)
Got this awesome wheel from Pink Godzilla when they were having a sale. It was cheap but I love how it feels and I think it gives the interior a classy look.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0514_zps2f88c2b9.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0514_zps2f88c2b9.jpg.html)
I also ended up trading my go pro for a set of Super Advan Sa3r's that I think fit the car very well.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0525_zpse6ca77cb.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0525_zpse6ca77cb.jpg.html)
So at this point I was pretty happy with the car and getting ready to take it in for paint and have the 1/4 damage from the previous owner repaired when the Ka decided it wanted to let go on my way to a friends house.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0549_zps11bc476f.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0549_zps11bc476f.jpg.html)
So in need of a new motor I went to a few of the local importers and stumbled across this.

Also found a pic from back when both cars were actually running :duh:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0436_zps49c47eb7.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0436_zps49c47eb7.jpg.html)
I still have to do the 60K service on The CA18 and order a WSP harness but I should have it up and running in a couple weeks. I'm super excited since I've owned most of the other Nissan motors but this is my first CA so its something new. The motor is STUPID clean too.

Since I'm on a roll here I guess I'll also introduce the newest member of my collection and my new beater car, the purple turd! The car started as a free shell that I got in a trade for one of my old exhausts. It was a mess when I got it, there was no interior, it had one 5 lug hub, and someone had hacked up all the wiring trying to do a shitty wire tuck. I probably should have passed up the trade but who can say no to a free shell? Especially when you have two other 240 projects that still require a bunch of work and time.
What it looked like when I got it
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0553_zps21630c7e.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0553_zps21630c7e.jpg.html)
I was originally going to just part it out but I realized I had pretty much everything I needed to get it running. 100 Drifters was coming up in 2 weeks so I decided to try to get it together so I could drive in the event. I put new rings in the old single cam from the hatch, paired it with the trans from the blown motor in my coupe and had the car up and running within the week. Fortunately (for me anyway) my friend had just rolled his coupe so after pulling the SR, I took the shell and used it as a parts car to get this one into somewhat drivable condition.
The parts coupe
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0528_zps8d5b8fa0.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0528_zps8d5b8fa0.jpg.html)
I threw the interior and coils from the parts coupe onto the new car and got it looking halfway decent. I also put the squares from my hatch on it since I have more baller wheels in the works for that car. Here's how the car looked 10 days after I got it (we busted ass to get this thing ready in time for 100 DOD).

Really crappy engine bay pic

Since I hate flat black and the car was kind of embarrassing to drive, I decided to take it to MAACO since they were offering their $250 paint special. I wanted something different but still a OEM color so I had it sprayed Lavender Frost Metallic (Nissan LG1). It came out surprisingly good and I'm stoked on the color. Here's some pics my friend took on the way back from paint.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0568_zps7bd3c6c4.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0568_zps7bd3c6c4.jpg.html)

After paint I did the single best thing that I could have done to the car and removed all the fanboy stickers from the previous owner.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0566_zps72ac6b7f.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0566_zps72ac6b7f.jpg.html)
The car needed brakes really bad so I got some zinc plated rotors and pads for cheap and put them on.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0585_zps78b25fc6.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0585_zps78b25fc6.jpg.html)
Got the car aligned and ready for the event.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0589_zpsa9245e4e.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0589_zpsa9245e4e.jpg.html)
Put in the interior from the rolled shell and a ebay steering wheel. Also installed some gauges and moved my bride seat over to it.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0594_zpse21d3860.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0594_zpse21d3860.jpg.html)
Up until now everything was going awesome, the car was about done and it looked like I was going to have something to drive at 100 DOD but after I welded the diff and took it for a test drive the day before the event, it started to develop really bad fuel cut issue when taking left turns. Turned out to be a faulty wire leading to the fuel pump relay caused by the previous owners wire tuck attempt but I found out too late and had to sit out at 100 Drifters.
At this point I debated selling the car for a while but after I got the fueling issue sorted, I figured I might as well keep it for a bit longer and bought some parts to make it into a decent car. I actually just finished installing some DNA motoring suspension arms today that I got in the Zilvia special last week. They're cheap and are standard ebay type arms but will work fine for the purpose of this car.
Arms installed

From here I just need to install my new steering rack and energy rack bushings and this car will be pretty much complete. I'm into it for slightly less then $2000 total right now, which I don't think is too bad at all haha.
As always feel free to let me know what you think of any of my projects. Good or bad I don't care any feed back is welcome!
I just finished reading your thread. Nice projects you got going on! If you don't mind me asking, what are the specs on the g6's?

Damn. I will never be that good.

Figured I would do a small update since I have been working on the cars a bit over the last couple weeks.
I've focused mostly on my purple coupe lately since that seems to be the car I have been the most motivated to finish; probably because its the only one that's currently running haha.
Anyway the car was in dire need of a new steering rack (it was actually sketchy to drive) so I went ahead and ordered a re-manufactured unit from Detroit Axle on eBay. After several delays due to weather problems it finally arrived.
So new and clean!
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0625_zps950aac1a.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0625_zps950aac1a.jpg.html)
I also figured I would do some energy rack bushings while I at it since the factory ones were beyond shot.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0626_zps98292625.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0626_zps98292625.jpg.html)
Replacing the rack is one of those things that isn't too hard but is messy and sucks a lot to do. It took me about 45 mins to wrestle the old rack out.
Small tip for anyone who is going to do this themselves: its much easier to remove and replace the rack if you take the transmission braces off the block.
Old vs. New
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0628_zps28b2059c.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0628_zps28b2059c.jpg.html)
After getting the new rack in and doing a eyeball alignment, I took it to Nissan for my friend to align. The adjustable suspension arms allowed us to play with the ride height a bit and get all the rake dialed out.
The new ride height in the rear. We we originally had it tucking rim but tucking 17s looked kind of stupid and gave the car some reverse rake which I cant stand lol.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0639_zps1d70e2e4.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0639_zps1d70e2e4.jpg.html)
I also got some new red clear taillights for the car since they were stupid cheap and I wasn't a fan of the smoked lights that came with the shell.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0630_zpsd4f6ef75.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0630_zpsd4f6ef75.jpg.html)
And installed on the car (Yes, I know I need a trunk lock lol)
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0642_zps1ccfea11.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0642_zps1ccfea11.jpg.html)
Random pic from when I picked up some sideskirts for a friend on one of my parts runs. I couldn't help testing them on my car lol. I usually don't like bodykits or anything that isn't oem aero on these cars, but I have to admit that they look pretty awesome.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0637_zps2e8aac9e.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0637_zps2e8aac9e.jpg.html)
I also started tearing down the CA18 for my two-tone and got it on the stand.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0640_zps11500d26.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0640_zps11500d26.jpg.html)
I was super happy to find that it still had the OEM clutch with plenty of meat on it.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0641_zpse36c9004.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0641_zpse36c9004.jpg.html)
I still need to do the 60K service before I can reassemble everything and drop it in the car.
That's about all for now. Expect some big updates on all of my cars in the near future when the weather warms up a bit. I always suffer from serious lack of motivation when its cold haha.

Yeah, I have the 2 coupes and my hatch right now which is honestly way too many 240s haha.
I'll probably sell off the hatch and my purple coupe sometime next year to get a skyline or put a down payment on a new IDX if I like the production version. I've always wanted a R32 but there's also a large portion of me that doesn't want another 20+ year old Nissan with the steering wheel on the wrong side lol.

I just took it to them and let them do their thing. Honestly it didn't come out nearly as good as the hatch did but I'm still very pleased with it. There is a decent amount of orange peal and some imperfections here and there but I can't really complain. The only extra thing that I had them do on this car was fix the rusted out rocker panel on the driver side since they said they could do it for around a $100 bucks. At the end of the day the paint and rust repair (the rust was pretty bad too) cost me a whopping $369.99 out the door, which cheaper then what the materials would cost If I did it myself haha.
In other news, I was going to try and get some more work done on the cars this weekend but I am currently dealing with this mess. Its been awhile since we got this much snow in VA.

So I've made some progress and figured I would do a quick update.
First up, I got the Ka-t setup finished in my hatch! The only problem is that it still doesn't run because its not getting any spark :bash: I've traced it to either the distributor or ecu though so I should get everything sorted soon. I still need to clean it up a bit but it came out pretty good (missing some parts in this pic but you get the idea).
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0661_zpsc3db1476.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0661_zpsc3db1476.jpg.html)
I also messed around with the purple coupe a bit to get it ready for the track this season.
I got a crazy good deal on a harness bar that I couldn't pass up so I went ahead and ordered it.
How it came:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0649_zps4095b1d4.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0649_zps4095b1d4.jpg.html)
And installed (sorry for the glare):
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0652_zps3d22802e.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0652_zps3d22802e.jpg.html)
Also got a baller harness to go with it haha.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0657_zps26366612.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0657_zps26366612.jpg.html)
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0659_zps3c132eba.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0659_zps3c132eba.jpg.html)
Interior looking fresh:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0665_zps5a287f4c.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0665_zps5a287f4c.jpg.html)
Now before anyone says anything about the safety of the harness/bar setup without a cage, I am fully aware of the dangers involved. I went with this setup more to hold me in better on the track then for safety reasons. The harness is properly wrapped and I use the oem 3 point belt on the street, plus none of the tracks I slide at have a high risk of rollover so it should be more then safe for my needs.
I also put on some cheap strut tower bars that I had laying around, not sure how much they'll do but I figured I might as well use them lol.

Not really related to my cars but I went to the local importers to help pick out a sr swap for my friends new shell on Saturday. We were there for a few hours and after going over several sub par swaps ended up with this.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0667_zps2702c221.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0667_zps2702c221.jpg.html)
I usually have reservations about buying a modded swap but this one was extra clean and the price was right so we went ahead and scooped it. When we got it back we cracked it open and found this.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0668_zps1a63b31f.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0668_zps1a63b31f.jpg.html)
It has about 90% life left in it so we were pretty stoked!
I'll be helping him with the swap this weekend so I probably won't get to do much work to my cars but I should have my hatch up and running shortly either way. That's about all I got for now, big updates to come once I get the hatch running!

Shoot me a pm with a offer if your serious, that goes for all my cars. I'm not really looking to sell but I'm willing to let stuff go for the right offer ;)
Which importer in NoVA did ya'll go to?
We went to JEI. I prefer them them to the other shops in the area because Phil (I think that's his name) is by far the most knowledgeable and least shady importer in the area. I've bought a good amount of parts from him over the years and never had a problem with any of his stuff. I know for a fact that he actually tests his motors too instead of just writing 180psi on the fan like most of the other local shops haha.
I got my ca18 from Nagano and haven't discovered any issues with it (its by far the cleanest ca18 I have ever seen for sale) but a few of my friends have had issues with motors that they got from there (blown head gaskets etc.) so I try to avoid them if I can. I know for a fact that they didn't compression test my CA because the coilpacks and plugs had obviously not been removed for a VERY long time lol.

Great builds man. I've also got a two-tone coupe and I've been looking into the CA swap. It's between that and a KA-T. Can't wait to see your swap done

Figured I would do a small update.
I finished the ca18 swap up last week. Pretty happy with how it turned out, still have some small things to finish up but it runs great!

Not sure which car the Works are going on but they're good sizing and the price was way too good to pass up. Expect a huge update on all the cars once I get all my pictures together. The last 6 months has been crazy...

Paint the front end of the two tone and it will be pretty much perfect. The Works should go on the two tone, Super Advans on the hatch.

Love this thread!
Paint will be coming as soon as I can track down a clean silvia aero bumper, I already have the sides and valences so the bumper is all that's holding me back. Its going to be awesome when its done, but for now it belongs in the doing it wrong thread haha.
Also its funny you mention wheels because I actually just picked these up for the hatch:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0868_zps08cf9daf.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0868_zps08cf9daf.jpg.html)
Forged A-Tech Final Speed Monoblocks 17x9 + 22. They came over as filler on a the last container my local importer got and one has some minor damage, so they were letting them go for cheap. Ended up scooping them for $250! The hatch is currently down so I couldn't resist rocking them on the two tone for a bit. Defiantly looks more aggressive with these wheels but I still think I like the Advans on it better...

Still have to get some tires but they should look awesome on the purple coupe.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0880_zps1f451397.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0880_zps1f451397.jpg.html)
The plan with the two-tone is to build it in the style of a mid to late 90s (Initial D era) Japanese touge car. I also plan to use it for HPDE events, so for these reasons I want to keep a functional alignment on it. Plan is to keep the Advans on it (since they are period correct for the look I want) until I come across the right set of Nismo LMGT2s :yum:
I feel like putting the works on the two-tone would be doing the wheels a injustice, so they are going on the purple coupe for now which is my beater/stance/drift/whatever car.
Big update on everything that has been going on in a bit, I've just been too lazy to type everything up haha.

As a fellow (rather new) enthusiast, but not new to the stance game, I appreciate your build so far. Simple and clean modifications with moar low!
I'm looking to get into the 240 game here shortly myself, with hopes of getting into a basically stock one. Seeing builds like this let me know what I'll need to look for and look-out for.
Many props!

I got some tires mounted on the Works and threw them on the purple coupe. I don't really have any good pictures of it with them on but they look great!

I broke the welded diff in the purple car at an event last month so I ended up swapping in my spare Nismo 2-way with 4.36 gears to get it ready for 100 Drifters of December last weekend. The new gear ratio really woke the single cam up! 3rd gear is actually useable now, which is something I never thought I would say haha. After swapping the diff we loaded up and headed to hundred drifters, which was a blast! Here are some pictures from the event, credit goes to whoever took these lol.

Now that the season is over I can finally focus on the other two cars which both need some love. The two-tone is currently sitting with a blown headgasket :( and my hatch has been blown up for awhile now lol. I'm hoping to get them both up and running within the next couple of weeks so expect a update soon!

That's the route I'm probably going to go but a large part of me wants an authentic piece. It looks like I'm going to get laid off soon though so I'm going to have to put a hold on any major (and kind of pointless) purchases like a aero bumper for a bit lol.

I understand but with drift tax on an authentic one it's not really worth it because most have cracks, dents, etc. and cost more then the cost of another car.

I am really liking that purple car! I recently saw a RHD 180x on craigslist in that color and really liked it! Two tones are sick and I totally agree with going in a 90's theme with it. Great work on all three and be sure to keep us updated!

I'm bored (and slightly drunk) and haven't done an update in awhile so I figured I'd catch everyone up on where the hatch is right now since its been awhile.
I got the KA-T setup running but the engine turned out to be a dud and had low compression on cylinder 3. I put a street tune on it and drove around for awhile but it eventually got to the point where it barely made any power so it got pulled and sold. I chucked in the single cam from my friends car since he went sr and gave the me the engine for free. The new motor ran good for about a day and then developed a knock, oddly enough the sr in my friends car we replaced it with also developed a knock the same day :picardfp:
Picture of said ill fated engine:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0713_zpsox2lfq16.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0713_zpsox2lfq16.jpg.html)
And a picture from the only cruise that the engine made it on (I decided to rock the Advans for a day since they had good tires lol):
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0798_zpsg4xaeaqb.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0798_zpsg4xaeaqb.jpg.html)
After that I ended up picking getting another single cam from a local dude that needed timing guides for $80. I did all the basic maintenance and an new oil pump before throwing it in and so far its been running great. Some friends and I went on a Skyline drive cruise once I got it in to celebrate.
My buddy drove my purple coupe since his car was down:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0002_zps9jhtv8ft.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0002_zps9jhtv8ft.jpg.html)

I'm enjoying driving the car and even have the ac working so I don't really have many other plans for the hatch other then finally getting the skirts painted and maybe piecing a type x kit together in the nearish future since I'm working again... I also have some 25mm extended LCA's that I plan to install with the A-Techs as soon as I get some tires for them that aren't huge lol. The car should look awesome once everything's on!
While I'm on a roll, I also did a bunch of reliability upgrades to the purple coupe in preparation for this season (and a few events last year):
Added a 2 row radiator and some e-fans:

A PBM skid plate:

A lightweight crank pulley (bought it on a whim but this thing actually made the engine rev noticeably faster):
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0793_zpsxagn6cyc.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0793_zpsxagn6cyc.jpg.html)

Also installed a FC3S Rx7 oil cooler and Nissan Motorsports high volume pump:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0769_zps0a8e5eb4.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0769_zps0a8e5eb4.jpg.html)

That's about all, the headgasket and studs for my CA finally came so the two-tone should be running and painted soon; stoked for that. Figured I would do an update since its been awhile. The only major news is that the purple car is gone. I used it for 4 or 5 events this season and the chassis was really starting to struggle with all the stress I was putting it through, so I decided to put it up for sale. Juggling 3 different 240 projects was a bit much anyway and the new owner is a cool dude.
I definitely had my fun with it though. Here's a short (like 15 sec) video my friend took of it in action

And the final pic before I delivered it to its new owner. He let me keep the Eurolines and my 2-way so I was stoked lol.

After I sold the purple car I focused on getting my hatch into decent dailyable condition again. The car ran great but definitely needed some love in the looks department. I threw the Eurolines from the purple coupe on since they were the only wheels I had with good tires at the time and fell in live with how they look on the hatch.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0236_zpsejxg0hfs.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0236_zpsejxg0hfs.jpg.html)
The crushed rocker panel that I got from coursing out at the local track awhile back was really starting to bug me so I finally got my sideskirts painted and covered it up. The car really needed the skirts and I feel like the car is really starting to look like something now!
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0324_zpshi6jnrsw.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0324_zpshi6jnrsw.jpg.html)

I also installed a r32 gtr seat since I sold my bride with the purple coupe. I really like how well this seat holds me (even when compared to my fixed back bride) and it sits nice and low since I retrofitted the 240 foot onto the GTR rail instead of extending the GTR one.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0076_zps2tdv4x9e.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0076_zps2tdv4x9e.jpg.html)
Somewhere along the way this rad M-Sports wheel found its way onto the car as well. I'm a sucker for rare JDM parts so I was pretty happy to replace the Grip Royal that was on there with this.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0339_zpsslxvgztm.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0339_zpsslxvgztm.jpg.html)
That's where the car sits right now, I have some Type X valances and tails on the way so those should be painted and on the car soon. After I get those on the exterior of the car will finally be where I want, pumped for that! I also should be swapping in a blacktop SR over the winter so I'll actually have some power for next season. I'll leave you with a photo dump from all the events I've done with the car so far this season!

I should also add that the motor is currently out of the two-tone and is being rebuilt, so that car should be resurrected soon as well! I'm currently working 7 days a week so progress has been slower then I would like on all of the cars but everything should be done pretty soon!

^^^ Haha, it went to a good home!
I figure its time to update this since a lot has happened in the last few months. First off I did a bunch of drifting!
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/12036541_10153754916139672_9064441333208444871_n_z psvx2hnog6.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/12036541_10153754916139672_9064441333208444871_n_z psvx2hnog6.jpg.html)
Unfortunately the old KA decided to develop a pretty serious knock mid way through the September Drift Nirvana event so I had to pull the old girl out.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0396_zpst8yjnsg9.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0396_zpst8yjnsg9.jpg.html)
I have to say that I was pretty impressed with how much life I got out of the KA. It had 280k on the clock when I got it and I probably put another 10k miles and 5 drift events on it. I defiantly feel like I got my $80 out of it lol. Since the plan was to do a blacktop SR over the winter anyway I went ahead and picked up a type x blacktop from Dave at VA jdm.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0394_zpsuo95dsqw.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0394_zpsuo95dsqw.jpg.html)
The harness was hacked up so he let me have it for $1600. I couldn't pass up that deal so I took it home and in the car it went! The harness issue did give me some grief later though.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0401_zpsihnqiaea.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0401_zpsihnqiaea.jpg.html)
I figured I could just use the extra blacktop harness that my friend had but I guess the type x harness is pinned slightly differently then a normal red or blacktop sr which lead to some headaches at startup but I eventually got it figured out (had to move 5 or 6 pins around on the ecu connector) and it fired right up.
I don't have any installed pics of the engine since I was in a hurry to get the car ready for the November event but I'll let the pictures speak for how well it runs!

There's only one more event this season that I plan to go to and now that the sr is in, the hatch is more or less finished (still have to paint my kouki valances and install the kouki tails but that's minor) so I should have all winter to focus on the two-tone! The goal is to have it running and have the aero installed and prepped for paint by spring so hopefully I'll be able to do it.
Also if anyone knows the photographers who took any of the photos of my car at the track feel free to post names and give them credit. I don't have facebook anymore so most of the action shots I post are pictures that my friends find and send to me, so I have no idea who took any of them lol.

Glad to hear its still alive and running around! Post up some pics, I'd love to see what it looks like now.
Since this was bumped I figure its time for a long overdue update since a lot has changed. In the off season I decided to go ahead and rework the suspension on the hatch so I purchased some s14 lower control arms, Tein inner tie rods with some Touge Factory V2 outters. I also installed some basically brand new ISR HR Pro coilovers that my friend gave me after he upgraded to Fortune Autos. Still not the best coilovers but they were nice replacements for the ageing EMUSA coils that were still on the car lol. I also installed a brand new rack and pinion as well as a Chase Bays powersteering line kit while it was at it. The result was a much more stable and predictable car on the track.
Photo dump of said parts:

And all installed:

Once the suspension was sorted I moved on to the clutch. I was in a hurry when I did the swap and couldn't wait for parts so I had reused the OEM SR20 clutch which I smoked within two events. I wanted something bomb proof so I rebuilt a used Exedy Hyper Single that I got for cheap and threw that on.
Looks so pretty, too bad nobody will ever see it haha:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0681_zps7rh4lt4r.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0681_zps7rh4lt4r.jpg.html)
After tackling all of the mechanical issues I moved on to installing some fun things that I had accumulated for the car.
First I installed a Cusco/Safety 21 5 point cage that a local importer had given me for cheap. I had been sitting on it for awhile because I knew that I wanted to keep full interior with the cage but put it off because I knew it was going to be a pain. I eventually just decided to take the plunge and was really happy with the results.
Initial Mockup:

And after some careful measuring the finished product!
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0760_zps6xxxgvfq.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0760_zps6xxxgvfq.jpg.html)

I also installed an OEM 180sx Kouki hatch and wing that I had purchased from the same importer. My initial plan was to have the wing and hatch painted prior to installing it but I would have had to remove the cage in order to change the hatch so I knocked it out at the same time. Why did I go through the trouble of bringing an entire hatch and wing assembly over you ask? The answer is that I always see poorly mounted Type-X wings and wanted OEM fit and finish. I had talked to Dave about bringing one over for me and they happened to have one in storage in Japan that he agreed to bring on the next container. $150 bucks and a few months wait later I had an OEM hatch and wing assembly!
When I brought it home:

Installed on the car:

I also installed and color matched some replica Kouki valances. This was the final product:

Sadly, that's the end of my story with the car since I traded it away for an S2000 last weekend. I still some mixed feelings about getting rid of the car since I had so many good memories and put so much effort into getting it to where it is today. At the end of the day though, I wanted a newer car with AC that I can daily drive since my truck is going to be down for awhile. I also feel myself starting to get away from drifting a bit and want a chassis that is more suited to grip racing so I made the tough decision to let her go but don't worry, I still have the Two-Tone so I'm not out of the S chassis game quite yet. I'm actually working on another drift car at the moment as well since I don't know when to stop. I will post another update shortly and try to keep the thread updated with progress on those two cars from here on out. Picture of the new whip:

Small but slightly significant update. I had been working two other 240 projects, a s14 beater and RB powered track car, but decided that it would be in my own best interests to cut myself down to one project car. I really wanted to finish them up but I needed the space and to free up some much needed time so I got both cars running and kicked them out the door (no pictures, I'm too lazy to upload them and they weren't much to look at).
Maybe I'm just getting old but being down to just two cars and just one project has helped me focus and more importantly given me the time needed to actually build something special. With a renewed focus I knocked out all the simple projects that I had on my list.
First up I installed an Apexi World Sport 2 exhaust on the S2k since the Berk exhaust that it came with was much too loud and drony for a DD. Really impressed with the quality and finish on the Apexi unit, it looks great and more importantly has a quiet yet aggressive note.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0964_zpskqpcvlzt.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0964_zpskqpcvlzt.jpg.html)
With that done the S2000 is more or less finished. I plan on getting some track wheels and sticky tires for it eventually but for now its just a pleasant DD.
Once the exhaust was done I had a free garage to pull the Two-Tone in and get all of the small odds and ends that I had been neglecting done. I replaced the headgasket and got it running about a year and a half ago but got sidetracked by life and other builds so it just sat in the corner of my property waiting to be finished. Since I was down to no drift car and there are still a few events I want to run this year I decided to get the car ready to see the track. With that said the first order of business was to install a good differential. Luckily for me I still had the old 4:36 geared Carbonetic 2 way from the purple coupe in the shed so I rebooted some 5 bolt axles, put in some fresh fluid and installed it.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_0977_zpsej5mf3ly.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_0977_zpsej5mf3ly.jpg.html)
Out with the old:

Next I needed a good seat so I popped by the local importer and scooped a beat up Zeta II for $100. After some cleaning and a patch it came out looking great! Stoked that I was able to quickly source a Zeta since I think that it fits the 90s style that I'm going for really well.

I also installed some SRP pedals that I've had laying around forever while the seat was out.

After everything was on I scooped some tires for the Super Advans so that I could get the car rolling again. I had been using the Advans as drift spares but I'm going to have to figure something else out since they're now on the car.

Now that all the minor stuff is out of the way, its time for the big update. I finally picked up a Silvia Aero bumper! With the bumper in hand I finally have everything needed to send the car off to paint. I plan to shake the car down at a local event on the 16th and if all goes well I have a appointment to drop it off at the shop on the 22nd for paint so the next update should involve a fully painted car!

Small update because I'm excited lol. Car has been in the shop for about a month in a half now and I figure I'd post some progress pics since I can't help myself. Base coat is down and clear is being sprayed as I type this so everything should be cured and ready to pick up by Saturday! Kind of bummed that I'm going to miss 100 drifters on Sunday since I probably won't have the car back together but its overshadowed by the excitement of finally having paint lol.

Hopefully next update will be of a fully painted and assembled car! I have a whole bunch of parts laying around that I can't wait to install so the next update should be pretty substantial.

Time for the most exciting update yet. The car finally has paint!!!! I still have a lot of finish work to do (do the lower body tape and make my valances fit a lot better) but I'm stoked on the results. Of course the car gave me all sorts of issues on the way home so yesterday was the first time I was able to move it out of the garage since I got it back home and assembled it.
Pics!

Having the car painted also motivated me to get my interior up to par so I added some cool bits.
Picked up a Brix passenger seat to match my Zeta driver:

Got some phase 2 checker mats for cool points:

Also found a NOS Daikie boss kit to replace my crappy eBay unit. So nice to have a working horn again lol:

Finally I scooped a dash mat to cover up the cracks until I can source a uncracked HUD dash:

And the finished product! Stoked how everything came together:

That's it for now, now that I have the car running properly again I should be able to focus on the finishing work for the paint/body and grab some high-res shots. As always feel free to let me know what you think, good bad, I don't care lol.

Yeah, it was one of the better trade offers that I got for my hatch so I went for it. I gave him 2k ontop and the millage is pretty high so it worked out to be a fairly even trade.
I'm digging the coupe. rust free??? and please don't wreck or cage it...
Thanks man! Its pretty much rust free sans a bit in the trunk/spare tire well from the taillights leaking. I've been meaning to take it to bare metal and put some POR15 down but haven't got around to it. I'm going to make a point to do it this spring though.
Its actually going to get a Autopower or Cusco half cage in the near future. I'm going to start doing some grip days at the local track with my friends in the spring and one of the requirements is a half cage. I think that it will fit the 90s touge theme pretty well too. I'm also to the point now that I have enough experience to be confident that nothing major will happen to it on track. As long as I don't find myself in the middle of any tandem trains the car should stay clean, can't make any promises since there's always a risk though.
Not a major update but I put some JDM S14 front brakes and Stoptech pads on the car over the weekend. Not that there was really anything wrong with the stock setup but I think the S14 calipers just look so much cooler on the car lol. They fill out the wheels so much better and hopefully will resist fade better when I start doing grip days since they're basically 30mm Z calipers. Didn't hurt that the calipers only ran me 100 bucks from the importer either lol.

So last post I had the car running and everything was going great. That lasted about a week (a solid run for this car!) before it developed horrible misfire on cylinder 4. I spent the last month or so trying to to figure it out whenever I had free time to work on the car. The ecu was throwing code 21 which meant there was an issue somewhere in the wiring or ignition circut. The car was running a wiring specialties harness so I figured it wasn't in the harness but after replacing the ignitor, resistor pack, and testing the ecu I decided to build a new harness on the whim. (Insert boring wiring pictures here) I didn't expect any change with the new harness but low and behold it fired up on the first crank and idled better then it ever had before. I looked over the WSP harness but didn't see any breaks or anything so there must be an internal failure somewhere. It makes sense because I have always had random ignition issues since I did the swap but never had time to sort it out because of other bigger problems. I guess I could be mad at WSP but the truth is I'm not sure what caused the failure and I'm just happy to have the ignition issues sorted out.
Crappy roller my friend took while I was on a test drive lol:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_1214_zpsgnluytjj.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_1214_zpsgnluytjj.jpg.html)
Anyway once the ignition issue was sorted I started daily driving the car to work to see if any other issues came up and just as I was starting to feel confident I walked into the garage to find this.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_1210_zpsbs3hzbn8.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_1210_zpsbs3hzbn8.jpg.html)
Ever since I've built the car I've had nothing but cooling system issues (among other things) so I pulled the manifold and replaced every single hose. It was a pain in the ass but its been about a month and I haven't had a single issue with the car after 1000 or so miles.
Since I'm finally starting to trust the car I'm feeling motivated to work on it more. I don't have any major updates but I've added a few small bits here and there over the last week or so.
First up was the lighting. I love small details and lighting is something that can really set one car apart from the rest. I want to keep things subtle so I sent my stock taillights off to be retrofitted with LEDs (still waiting for them to be finished) and installed some brand new OEM 180sx half and halfs. I also have some bricks for the car, but I've been lazy about going to pick them up from the importer...
Pics of half and halfs:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_1225_zpsowokry85.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_1225_zpsowokry85.jpg.html)
I also got around to making the dorki dori valances fit properly. The skirts were a good fit but I was disappointed with the fitment on the valances. I considered just buying OEM units but didn't want to spend the money on them especially since I'd have to have them painted. Eventually I decided to sit down with my heat gun and see what I could do. After a few hours I finally got the fitment good enough for me to live with:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_1224_zpshqr8kjqv.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_1224_zpshqr8kjqv.jpg.html)

Moving on to more small details I installed a Greddy Turbo Gauge that I'd had laying around forever. After spending awhile deciding where I wanted to mount it I settled on the two dead spaces in the cluster surround. Really stoked on the location, its out of the way and easy to see. The gauge also adds the perfect 90s touch to the interior IMO:

I've always liked the look of these cars with rain visors so I scooped a cheap set to tie me over until I can source a clean OEM set. Actually pretty impressed with these things, they're coupe specific and look reasonably close to the OEM units.
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_1219_zpsac9xzthn.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_1219_zpsac9xzthn.jpg.html)
I went on a small spare parts buying spree so I scooped an extra CA longblock for cheap:

Its nothing special but leakdowns well and it has a Tomei headgasket and some other goodies, for $400 I couldn't say no lol. I also grabbed a pair of 2 piece Rays Huhrer Racing wheels to use as spares this season, I've always loved this style of wheel for some reason; just a solid classic wheel:

Probably the biggest part of this update is that I scooped some new shoes for the car!

They're the exact same specs at the Advans on the car now but are in 100x better shape so I'm stoked. Big ups to Atticus_Jay for getting them from Japan to my door in less then a week!
That's about all for now. Next update the Bricks and LED tails should be on the car. I've also ordered some Federal 595 RS-RR R compound tires for the new Advans which should hopefully be a good track day tire. The project is finally winding down. I've been saving for a house so I've slowed down on my parts ordering but the only part I really have left to purchase is my half cage and I'll have everything I need to complete the car. Supper excited to be on the home stretch!

I'm curious about the Maaco paint jobs...
Was the two tone painted by them as well? Anymore close-ups?
I wonder if they'd do a few extra coats of clear, if you paid for it, so you could spent time correcting it after. If so, that's a killer way to get a quality paint job for cheap.

I've had several cars done by Maaco over the years and have always been impressed by the work they do for the price. The thing to remember is that they're a franchise so some locations are much better then others. The key is to read up on the reviews or stop by and check out their work before you commit to a location. I'm fortunate enough to have two very good Maaco's within 45 mins of me so I usually go with the one that gives me the best estimate. You also want to take your car when they are having a special since it cuts the price significantly. I've had pretty much every level of paint job that they offer so here is my take on them:
The two tone was done at a Maaco but its kind of a special case since I knew the painter. The work was done through the shop though and ran $2100 out the door. $1300 was the actual paint job and the rest was body work since the shell wasn't the greatest starting point. The paint itself is 1 coat of primer, two coats of base and a thick layer of clear. Its not show quality but its better then the average OEM paint job that I see on new cars these days and is certainly better then the factory job that came on the car.
If your looking for a cheaper option, the paint that was on my hatch was their single stage urethane with clear mixed in. That job was $1200 total if i remember right. Paint was about $500 after tax since I got the UV protection and the rest was body work. It looked good and held up great but had nowhere near the luster the two tone has.
The purple coupe was their basic $250 special that they offer (its $350 not on special I think). Total for that job was $400 or $450 out the door which included "fixing" the driver rocker panel which was rusted out. You could definitely tell that it was a lower end paint job and it had a few imperfections but was still better and cheaper then anything the average person would be able to do on their own.
PM me if you want some close ups of the two tone, I haven't done the final buff yet but it shines pretty nicely so I could probably get good enough shots to give you an idea of if its something you want to look into.
Nice build man. lol i know it's what everyone says but i'm just speechless. and i also live in NOVA around Aldie.

Small updates since I got some knickknacks for the car. I sold my old Okachan Meter to another member on here and instead of transferring the balance to my bank account I just decided to blow it lol.
I found a deal on a BNIB square Silvia trunk lock (on Ebay of all places) that I couldn't pass up so I scooped it and put it on. It looks sooooo much better then the stock round lock but now I feel like I need some OEM Silvia or 240sx lettering in the stock location to make the rear end look less plain.

I also picked some cup holders and big angle plates from Unique Auto Creations on here. I'm missed having cup holders like I had in my hatch and I have to say that this new UAC design is 1000x better then the simple plate that I had in that car. I'm still waiting on speakers before I fit the plates and I'm a bit skeptical if they'll make a difference or not but I figured I'll give them a shot. I'll post my thoughts once I get them fitted.

Moving on to cooler things I went ahead and installed the SAFC2 that I had laying around from my old KA-T setup:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_1245_zps12fy4zhk.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_1245_zps12fy4zhk.jpg.html)
I don't plan to tune with it but I can use the decel air setting to run this agian:
http://i1304.photobucket.com/albums/s532/jfox31/IMG_1247_zpscqjgc56a.jpg (http://s1304.photobucket.com/user/jfox31/media/IMG_1247_zpscqjgc56a.jpg.html)
I've been running no BOV for a bit since it was running pig rich with the Abby Road valve before. The SAFC seems to have fixed the issue and the car runs great with the atmospheric valve now. Finally my LED retrofitted tailights arrived! I'm super stoked on how they turned out, they look 100% stock during the day and add just the right amount of rice to the car at night lol. I'm in love...
Off the car:

And heres some pics on the car! Its kind of hard to capture with an iphone camera in low light but you get the idea. First pic is versus the OEM light and second is both installed.

That's all I got for now. I did place an order for my half cage through my friends shop (even at cost brand new Safety 21 stuff is a bit pricey lol) late last month so hopefully it will be in before the first event on the 26th of this month. The car is pretty much ready either way so I'm pretty excited to get out there and slide this thing this season!

Update time!
Not much has changed to the exterior of the car. Unfortunately I waited too long to scoop my bricks so they ended up getting sold, i wasn't too worried about it since I got my money back. In the meantime I picked up a mint dual projector from KrisKouki on here to replace my busted driver side light (all the tabs were broken and it was held together with a fineline repair bracket), its amazing how much better the light output is now that I have a driverside light that's actually aimed properly lol.

I was super stoked to have the car ready for the first event of the season last month but I didn't get any pics because I blew my turbo about 10 laps in :picardfp: I can't wait for the day I can actually run a full event without this car breaking down, I'm sure it will get there soon but right now its a bit discouraging...
Anyway I was in need of a turbo and a as luck would have it my friends new Tomei setup came in a few days after mine let go. A deal was struck where I could have his S14 BB T28 if I took it off the car for him.
His new setup, always loved the looks of these ARMS turbos:

With the new turbo in hand I got to work replacing the blown turbo on my car. The factory CA18 manifold makes accessing the bolts kind of a pain but I was able to wrestle the old turbo out pretty quickly.
Goodbye dead turbo:

So much room for activities!

I had originally planned to run a tubular manifold with the new setup but it turns out it would only work on a RHD car and wouldn't clear the brake booster. Shame because I spent a bunch of time warping it up real nice...

Of course I had to grab some lines and all the misc parts needed to make the T28 work on the car. You basically need all the same parts you would need to put the turbo on a s13 SR to install it on a CA (clocking adaptors, oil lines, etc.) I was moving through the install pretty quick so I didn't take pictures of most of it. I did get some awesome goodridge lines for the car though. They utilize forged fittings and 2000 degree heat sleeve so they should be pretty much bomb proof.
Race car stuff!

I spent a good bit of time trying to install the tubular manifold before realizing that it wasn't going to work so I transferred everything over to the OEM manifold which made the rest of the install go fairly smoothly.
Once the turbo was on it was time for a tune. The original plan was to source a CA18det power FC and some GTR injectors but finding a CA pfc proved much more difficult then I thought so I started looking at other options. My research led me to Horsham Developments in the UK who actually offered a chip that fit my setup to a T. I'm always a bit skeptical of mail order tunes (especially from people I've never heard of) but after some poking around on Driftworks and some other European and Aussie forums I discovered that they were legit and well respected so an order was placed.
The only issue with the Horsham tune is that it left me needing a socketed ecu. I didn't really want to send my ECU out to have it done and wasn't super comfortable doing it myself so I hopped on Yahoo Auctions to see what I could find. I've always gotten super lucky with things on YAJ and I was able to score a socketed CA ecu for under $100 landed.
The sellers picture, kind of took a chance since I it wasn't fully opened and the translation wasn't the best but it was cheap so I rolled the dice:

Once it arrived I fully opened it and was relieved to see that it was exactly what I needed! I busted out a small flathead and started some delicate surgery lol:

Old chip out, kind of curious what its tuned for. I think I got it so cheap because the seller didn't know either:

And the new chip installed!

Once I got the tuned ecu installed I put my Vibrant MBC on, set the boost to the recommended 14 psi and took it for a drive. All I have to say is holy shit! the car is super quick now. The tune seems pretty spot on too, its a tad on the rich side so I'll probably do some tweaking on my friends dyno with the AFC but for now I'm super happy with it.
I celebrated by giving my bay a much needed cleaning. I still need to drill/tap the turbo outlet so I can pull wastegate vacuum from there, reinstall my BOV and heat shielding but I'm having fun driving it around as is for now:

Hopefully next update will have some action shots since I'm hitting an event next weekend. Also hoping to have my cage installed this week if it comes in (it keeps getting delayed) but we'll see...
