Has anyone had this happen when torqueing the head?

pix plz.
you didn't follow the torquing procedure, did you?
unless there was a large amount of foreign material inside the threaded hole, i can't imagine why it would crack (assuming that you are using the correct size studs, of course)

this could be your cause did you follow them.. as in tightening them in steps, and following the sequence?

I had a mechanic doing the work so I don't know.

Sounds like you have an issue on your hands... It'll be difficult to prove that he followed te recommended procedure. I've seen people break the studs before cracking the block.

What kind of.motor? Sr20s will strip the aluminum block before breaking and iron blocks I would think would break the studs lol.

I checked both procedures yesterday on arp's website....
ARP 2000 is at 90 ft/lb with their ultra slick assembly lube
and their older material is 80 ft/lb..... so not sure where 105 came from... You can type in your kit and get the instructions on their website.

I'd ask the mechanic to tell you how he put the studs in / what he torqued it to... then find out the correct specs
also fwiw I know some of the arp studs were the wrong length for sr20s if they were earlier model ones
