Hey guys, so for the past two months I have been driving my s13 to drift events around Socal. I did this so I wouldnt have to buy a Truck and spend extra money on gas, buying a trailer, and insurance for the truck. Although, recently the hassle off trying to fit wheels and what not into the trunk of my s13 has taken its toll. Also, recently on my way home from an event in riverside my battery died on the freeway:cry::bash: and had to call a tow truck and get a new battery which took a lot of time and money. Soooooooooo i have decided to buy a truck and trailer to haul my s13 to events. I was hoping you guys could give me your opinion on what are some options for a reliable, strong, and that will do okay on gas for $5k-$10k. I would prefer a diesel but I will consider regular gasoline trucks.:newbie:
Thanks in advance

Your mom's minivan should work.

^This. Good luck getting something reliable for less than 10k and having money left for a trailer.

lol i agree.. I have towed my 240 with my buddies f150 with NO PROBLEMS. If you find yourself a nice f150 or similar for cheap it will tow no problem plus you get the extra bed room. I have a 98 dodge diesel it pulls whatever is behind it. I never towed the 240 though.

Put a trailer hitch on the 240 and buy a harbor frieght trailer and load tires on it. Done

edit*...problem with having a trailer IMO that I run into is everyone and their mother needs something towed..something to think about

You could probably buy a mid 90s cummims dodge and have enough for a decent car trailer. I bought a 97 dodge 2500 with 108,000 miles and a 6 speed for 7100 a few year ago. I'm not a dodge person by any means, but It wasn't a terrible truck. You could also try govdeals.com, they auction off vehicles from different counties and state government facilities and you can get some good deals.

one that cant be easily stolen if trailer is hooked up

You don't necessarily need a truck like stated before
Any thing that has decent torque and weighs a bit will work
mini van, SUV, mini truck, really anything
you could also use a flat tow hookup and tow it with a car
you got Alot of options

I bought my 96 F150 5speed for $1700 to tow my car to event. haven't bought the trailer yet but I sure used truck a lot to haul things.

and It hasn't broke down on me yet so I guess as long you maintain your vehicle and buying maintained vehicle be "Reliable".

So why not look for some cheap pick up truck that you could use for many other things not only Tow your car.

It's done more towing to friends cars then my own at the moment but it sure as hell gets the job done and is quite reliable.

really depends on how far you travel. my travels range from 45 min, 7 hrs, to +10 hrs to events so it made sense for me to get a dodge diesel.
something to note is that storing of trailer can be a pain in the ass if you don't have the space readily available.

Umm...no. You'd be a dumbass to be towing a car that weights 2900 lbs, a trailer, tools and wheels on a station wagon subaru and their glass trannies.

1999-2001 7.3 diesel 4x4 f250

The kicker tho, is those year diesel truck prices have slightly shot up. Those are the last highly sought diesel engine from Ford.

I personally want a manual Dodge ram diesel. Inline 6 turbo and tons of torque. Depending on how much you tow it'll help.

Look up expeditions on craigslist.. They go for crackhead prices, the same thing as an F150, same motor, but for like 4-5k usually. You can even lock your tools inside of it.

A Diesel is great for pulling heavy shit. But look up what it cost to
Service and up keep, And that is way over kill for a
Light weight track car. I use a 99 Sierra as my dd and I tow my 240
With it. i picked it up off of CL for $6k and bought my small 12ft car
Trailer for $700. So ya you can get a good set up for under $8-9k

I've had 5000 lbs hooked to my Pathfinder many times an it pulls the hell out of it, I even had a little over 6000 lbs but stopping was a bitch with no brakes on the trailer I was towing. It's given me reliable service so far at just shy of 100000 on the clock. I'd list it for around 9k if I were to sell it, so, yes it would be no prob to find something that's not overkill for towing something as light as an s chassis around on a less than 16' tandem trailer.

If you guys are able to bring cars in from overseas (i guess I'm talking to Canadians, or guys looking at '88 or older) there are tons of awesome big trucks for literally peanuts available. Pajeros, Toyota hilux surf, etc. 5 spd turbo diesel rhd for sub 10k usually. And the cars are always clean, rust free, low miles.

A gas v8 1500/150 pickup does really well. Anything, bigger or more powerful will do the job even better (2500/3500 diesel/dually). I have a 01 seirra 4.8, it has load assist airbags that keep the truck from squatting when loaded down which in turn provides better stability when towing and reduces the likelihood of trailer sway. I use a uhaul car hauler each time as I have nowhere to store a trailer of my own. They are not the easiest to load lowered cars onto as say a dovetail trailer but can be done by driving the rear of the tow vehicle up on blocks and using wood under the trailer ramps.

Dodge Durango (1ST Gen) are found dirt cheap on craigslist. Mine was a 99' bought it for 1500 and towed my S14, both the durango and s14 were packed with everything i could fit in it, even had stuff strapped to the roof and went 1000 miles moving from FL to KS.

It pulled just fine, had to stay under 65MPH otherwise the the trailer would sway. I'd recommend getting a trailer with brakes.

since this thread is already up, i'll ask here. i have a regular cab chevy 1500 with a 4.8. will towing an s14 with it be sketchy, or will I be alright? it is lowered, so if I towed with it I would be getting helper bags.

^ 4.8 would be a bare minimum for me to tow and haul but still doable. A 5.7 should be fine. What kind of trailer do you have? Enclosed or open? Or or do you have one of those front bumper attached towing bar?

I had a 2002 GMC Denali AWD/Quadrasteer extra-cab pick-up 6.0 and that thing towed and hauled everything and anything. If seen Nissan Armadas and Titans do work without any problem.

I'll be in the market for another truck to tow my track car and other crap soon. I'd love to get an Armada since I have a family now.

id probably be pulling an open trailer. i'm sure the engine will be fine, it's the size of the truck itself that I am worried about.

94-98.5 ram 2500 which is the 12v cummins. cheap. reliable as fuck. cheap to mantain, and cheap to get 20+mpg while towing. ugly as shit though, but its a tow vehicle.

i just found a guy with a 98 long bed/2wd/12 valve that wanted a gas truck and traded him my 99 silverado and 200 bucks for it. deals on deals

i disagree on the Cheap to maintain on the 12v cummins. I work in a Heavy dutie diesel shop/Diesel Performance. And 12v's are still pretty expensive to maintain. If you dont do services frequiently they run into tones of problems. With that said we did have a 2002 come in with 785000km needing its factory headgasket replaced and there was still cross hatching in the cylinders. But with the Diesel pickups you NEED to keep up on services or else injectors go because you dont have a clean fuel filter and blah blah blah blah blah. Your better off to go with a Chevy 1500 they have more then enough power to get the job done. Not to mention there a fuck ton cheaper.

i checked on uhauls website and a 1500 reg cab short box is approved to tow a car trailer. only thing i would be concerned with is the lowered ride height of the truck, that means the trailer hitch will be lower to the ground and the end of the trailer higher up, making lowered cars even more difficult to load. you will need to back the truck up onto like 5-6 levels of 2x8

94-98.5 ram 2500 which is the 12v cummins. cheap.

even a 12v with high mileage holds its value, but even still, the cummins is badass

I've always ha a sweet spot for dually's.
ford makes some nice trucks but I'm partial to dodge rams and cummins power.
I know that the dually is over kill but if its a dedicated tow rig, why buy a normal half ton?

A Ford v/6 or any work truck can tow a 1500 pound trailer and a 3k pound car no problems. The problem is frame strength, you cant use a small truck because of the legnth and frame strength.

I have. V8 colorado that I DD. I once hauled my mothers Xterra about 300miles no problem using a uhaul trailer. Im not sure how the 5cylinders do but Colorados are small and easy to park in The city.
