So I've been all over google and I even searched here but I've found that some places say the fsm says 3.7litres, which is 3.9qts and some say it says 4litres. When I check my oil, anything over 3 qts is overfill and the same on my buddy's and he used the same amount. So I'm confused as to how much and whether or not to trust my dipstick. Has anyone had this problem??

I always put in just under 3.5 quarts and then "fine tune" it til it's perfect. I'm assuming that's around 3.6-3.7 quarts.
There's no not trusting the dipstick unless you manage to bend it to hell and back. It's basically a fail proof setup.

trust the dipstick.
its foolproof. (as long as its the dipstick FOR this engine!)

no it won't. 4qts on a stock pan is too much.
the dipstick is designed to have marks on it for a reason. fill until you are within the appropriate hash marks. then re-check your oil level after you have started the car, run it for about 10-15 seconds, and shut it off and let it sit for about 30-45 seconds.

On my friends SR20 we put 4 quarts and it's at the perfect limit. I would think running aftermarket oil lines would need the .1 quart.. lol
On my 280zx I just went NA-Turbo and I'm .3 quarts high and hte motor runs perfect.

all depends what setup your running and how long you let it drain, most new diesel trucks must be drained for at least and hour by manufacture specs if not up to a quart of oil stays inside thus enabling you to overfill but thats mostly due to viscosity your running.....fill and check your dipstick for best results. good luck

remember when running, the filter holds about 1/2 quart... if you put in 3.5 quarts, once it runs, there will only be 3 quarts in the pan..

Maybe when the engine is dry. (after rebuild or teardown)

This... That's what I would do. My sr always ran 3.5-3.6

is this just an sr thing that the damn dipstick is so illegable? or is it becasue of greddy pan. I use RP 10w-30. kinda hard to read it when its fresh.

I've always ran 4 in sr's with no problem. Helps with slosh. Pretty much every engine I've ever built or worked on I put an additional 1/3rd - 1/2 quart. Some of those being 1100whp. Especially did at the GM dealership because they have oil burning issues.

I've ran 4 quarts on mine for about 5 years now without any problems what so ever. My good friend also runs 4 quarts on his 650hp SR with no problems at all. Just let it drain for a little while to get most of it out. I'd rather have a little over then risking running low.

Neither of my SR's have had this issue.

FSM calls for 3.9
Dipstick is set to measure with the engine full of oil, galleries and everything so if you check right after you pour in the oil it'll be way too full, you have to check within ~30seconds of turning off the motor for the marks to be correct.
4 quarts is fine, the bottom of the crank's plane is above the top of the oil pan so overfill is really only a problem if you put more than a few extra tenths of a quart in.

The dipstick is possibly the issue, you would have known that if you would have read it. Fucking moron.

If the marks are hard to see just get a knife and scratch them a little deeper.

Oh no don't run 4 its gonna blow the welds on the intake and the floor pan fall out.
omgRWDgoodness!

Believe it or not it actually helps to blow into the valve cover's oil filler hole when doing an oil change. You can get a good half-quart or more of extra oil to piss out by giving it a few Big Bad Wolf-style huffs & puffs into there (or just use some compressed air if you've got the equipment available). I do this every time on both my and family/friends' cars.

.1 quarts isn't going to hurt anything. You are taking this way to far. 4 quarts on a factory pan is FINE even if the engine is not brand new.
Jesus people. It's one tenth of a quart...

THIS^ is what you should listen to. 4 quarts, run the engine, shut it down and wait 5 minutes for the oil to run down, check it again, it's full. There is a reason you are suppose to check your oil with the engine warm. It has nothing to do with temperature. It's the fact that the engine was recently ran and the oil has filled all the passages and galleries.
