Is the heads up display thing on the windshiled a sticker, or is it like something that can/needs to be put on at a auto glass shop? (like a tint)

I bought a 92 with HUD and digi dash, but the windshield has a crack, so sooner or later (preferably sooner) Ill have to replace the glass, but I want to keep the H.U.D.

are you saying that cadillacs have HUD's so the dealers will put it on for you? I have a auto glass shop right up the street from me, cant they do it? they do tinting and stuff.. Ill go ask them I guess. I cant think of any caddy dealer around me :(

Cadillacs have HUDs. It's simply a reflective film attached to the windshield, and you can buy that from the dealership. You can also use tint, but the coloring of the film is designed for maximum viewing, and tint would work, just not be the best. Also, it's probable that a windshield repair auto glass shop would be able to source or have the film. Call them, then the caddy dealer.

Ok cool, its just htat dealerships tend to be more expensive. And I know that tint wouldnt be the same, I was only saying that it doesnt seem to be simply a sticker but something apply with heat, like tint. So therefore a auto glass shop would have hte proper tools if not the proper material already. I figured this owulda come up with someone else before, unless everyone else got the JDM sup3r l33t ti6ht style ub3r bulletproof glass, and my 240 didnt :(

go to takakaira.com, they have the film for sale there. Its very cheap, like 11 dollars.
Tint works too, just not as well.

tint works perfect. i have 35% mirror tint, i can be driving directly into the sun and see it fine. theres times when i cant see the normal speedo, but can see the HUD. also, since its inside the glass it eliminates that "double layer" effect the HUD has. it only reflects off one surface, making one clear set of numbers.

summary: use 35% mirror tint.

or nothing at all works ok too, thats what my coupe has right now, and the numbers kind of shadow, like there are two sets. I guess its reflecting off both layers of glass. But its still quite visible except in direct sunlight.

I just wanted to bump this to tell the cost of the HUD windshield. I was quoted at $800, without the inclusion of installation costs.

I got a normal windshield for $247.50 installed and am going to do the 35% mirror tint thing.

The windshield with the HUD actually has it in the glass so its not a film. It is really expensive to replace it with another HUD windshield.

A cheaper alternative is usually a normal windshield and some reflective HUD film. I don't know if tint works as it needs to be reflective on the inside not the outside.
