View Full Version : Alex's S13 Odyvia Coupe Build

Lately, I have been itching for something really fun to drive and it's given me a bit of motivation to work on my S13. I've had this thing for over a year and have been slowly collecting parts while the shell has been collecting dust in the corner of my shop. I bought my friend's S13 fastback as well for it's engine and that also hasn't moved in a few months.
Just warning you guys, I've been known to abandon projects after spending a lot of money and nearly completing a car to my liking.
First, an obligatory photo of a previous car.
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/270883_10150239333838004_7952328_n.jpg
I want to build a super good looking car that is *FUN* to drive... on the track, in the canyon, doesn't matter. Chasing lap times is tiring and as I recently discovered - it's not for me, however I thoroughly enjoyed beating my other car around the track so I guess that is the motive for this S13.
I managed to snag some picture of it's current state this evening. I didn't start working on it until two weeks ago or so... and progress might be slow as I have very little spare time and I'm usually tired after finishing work for the day.

As you can see, I only installed one headlight... my friend cut the quarter panel for me underneath the overfender, but I need to finish building my wheels and test fitted before welding it up. Cage is fabricated by Parts Shop Max... all of the suspension components are PSM as well - just missing coilovers. <- PM me if you have any used ones for sale!
This is what we did the past few days... removed piping and intake stuff from the hatch, removed exhaust, driveshaft, clutch cable, power steering, drained fluids, etc.

Front wheel mockup - SSR GT3 18x12 with 7" lip. I am planning on running 18x10 with a 6" lip and 25mm spacer, but this gives me a good idea of what it will look like. Rears should be in the 19x12 - 55-75 range depending on how high I radius and flare and how much negative camber I decide to run.
http://i.imgur.com/M2T0n.jpg
Everything is planned already - I just need to purchase a few more parts and get to work installing everything.
Some more planned details...
S15 SR20DET with GT2871R 350-400 whp
Spirit Rei Odyvia Kit with custom body kit and grille (see below)
Radiused and reshaped fenders all around
326Power S15 3d*Star sideskirts and rear bumper
Wald Black Bison W212 front bumper
Origin Type II S13 Silvia hood (I need this if anyone is selling one)
Full Parts Shop Max suspension
Cadillac CTS-V brakes with Stoptech 14" 370Z Akebono rotors
SSR GT3 19x12 -75, 18x10 -50
and probably some vertical doors because I like them.
Here is a somewhat accurate shitty render I did a few months ago to get the original vision down.
http://i.imgur.com/VA4e5.jpg
All I need right now are PBM coilovers, seats, and some motivation! Feel free to send me business (wheel customization) too as money helps too. :D

Pretty sure he is building the coupe since the headlight and fender is mocked up on that as well as the rendering is the coupe. The hatch I believe is a parts car.
Hope to see this finished looks teh sweetness.

Wow, lots of interest! Work has been really busy these past 3 weeks, which has been great. I just purchased some coilovers so when they show up, we can get the car back on the ground and start working on it.
I'm currently trying to decide whether I should stay with the 6 speed or go through the hassle of swapping everything to a 5 speed setup. I'd like to run 350-380 whp, which is risky with the 6 speed transmission.

How do you plan on making the mercedes bumper fit? Is it even close to fitting without any modifications?

Fiberglass to fiberglass, it's pretty easy and even if the dimensions are off, just more gets cut. Any can work as long as you're not trying to put an Escalade bumper on a Ford Focus.

Installed brand new Powered By Max Competition coilovers!
They go so low, I can't even install my spare roll-around wheels in the front! Once I get something for that, I can push the car outside, wash it, and start doing everything!

Hate to be posting so many similar photos, but I went to work today (Saturday) and got the car on the ground.
The wheels on the car are 5Zigen ZR+520 in 18x7.5 +37 with 235/40/18. It is actually shocking how sunk it is in the rear. Almost looks like I could fit two of them in a dually setup. I have S14 LCA's in the front so it pushes it out about 10mm extra - something that I failed to account for with the original planned specs.
Will be hosing the car down on Monday and beginning the wheel build. I need a new 6 speed clutch and throw out bearing before I can drop the engine in. Will probably be ordering an ORC variant from Japan. I'll probably start by installing the drive axles, diff, and driveshaft. Hopefully my friend can help me weld up the cut quarter panels as well.

And... I started the wheel build! Decided to go with 19x7.5 outers and 19x4.0 inners for 19x11.5 -46 rear. Fronts should be 18x10 -1 with a 5" lip. I'm building that with spacers in mind due to the large brakes. May go 19" fronts in the future.

I think 11.5 isn't even that wide, I just happened to need that much lip to fill up the arches. I am going to drive the car on a track, yes. It should be making around 350 whp on the first go around and then I'll be upping boost when I get a 350Z 6 speed and larger injectors.

As far as I know, there are no "Dmax" mirrors. These are like hybrid M3/Ganador style ones, not sure what they're actually referred to as. I actually bought them off of eBay Japan where they were sold as real Ganadors for an R32 skyline... so I sort of got shafted on that. Real Ganadors are in the future though when I put the final touches on it.

Thank you. I have lots of experience with that (over 50+ wheel setups on my S2000). Also, it is something that I do daily here at my shop. Sometimes it is hard to gauge with such a large gap to fill (85mm overfenders) and nothing near that size to use as reference.

Instead of re-uploading each "high quality" photo on imgur, I'm going to just hotlink from my Facebook uploads. Makes it easier on me.
This is the progress from last night...
I bought a hub so I could install the Momo steering wheel.
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/537592_10151360713128004_1780935130_n.jpg
Also, I got the front tires on! Went with the new Falken Azenis FK453 in 215/35/19... I have yet to adjust the new toe arm that I installed so the passenger side rear wheel is toed out.
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/734127_10151360713133004_1857074675_n.jpg
https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/734169_10151360713123004_1254032731_n.jpg
Front wheels are 19x9.5 -21 plus a 20mm spacer and S14 LCA = roughly 19x9.5 -51. It pokes a little bit so I need a bit more negative camber up front.
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/577753_10151360713803004_1073282113_n.jpg

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/208434_10151360713808004_409530843_n.jpg
Since the front tire tucks in, I had to unbolt the fender from the bottom just to get the wheel onto the hub.
https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/482660_10151360714993004_1608617599_n.jpg
Driver side... I still need to install the new toe arm on this side, adjust camber, and install the mirror.

This is pretty much it as far as fitment works goes until I have the drivetrain in, which should drop the car a little more. I'll be re-adjusting the suspension when all sprung weight is added.

Just a few small updates...
I'm picking up my Spirit Rei Odyvia hood tomorrow. After theorizing and staring at photos of the Odyvia hood compared to an S13 Silvia hood, I decided that there is actually a visual difference near the area where the hood meets the headlights and it'd be too risky to assume that an S13 hood will fit perfectly. I'll still be picking up an Origin Type II hood in the future and regardless of that, I'd need the front part of the Spirit Rei hood for fitment purposes anyhow.
I don't want to be that guy that just keeps posting the same photos over and over without making any changes so I'll try to have something new in each update.
After not achieving enough front negative camber, I took my friend's ingenious idea of bolting the front coilover to the side of the knuckle, leaving the top bolt out, and marking through the top hole with a sharpie where a new hole should be drilled. This was decided as the best method after seeing countless samples of sloppy slotting that people do on here. Instead of blindly drilling a new hole directly next to it, I knew that it'd have to be done in an arc so with this mark, I think that a figure-8 shape is the best option, of which I'll be having our machine shop do this so it'll come out cleanly. I figure I can adjust later using camber plate up top.
http://i.imgur.com/ZWgzZjM.jpg
I also finished installing the driver side Godspeed (sorry) V2 "bent" toe arm and preloaded the spring half an inch. I'll be purchasing 150mm Swift springs in the near future which will get the car to the height that I want. It is barely tucking currently.
http://i.imgur.com/4PqKmDT.jpg
Front camber. Due to the fender shape, it is not drivable at this height in front. I'll be reshaping the front fender before setting final alignment. That is a couple months down the line, however.

I've wanted to go Odyvia for so long but never had the stupid dough laying around to do so. What did the kit run you? It seems like it may make more sense to just piece it together minus the front hood/bumper/skirts. I got a good friend who is a parts manager at Honda so I assume I can get the lighting at a steep discount.

I couldn't figure out why the car wouldn't sit lower at first, but after taking measurements, I realized that the fenders / overfenders are already "radiused" a bit higher than stock metal and other common fenders.
@SupaDoopa, PM me if you're interested in a full set with headlights. I think the price will pleasantly surprise most people now.

So after trying every avenue to get my 326Power kit here on time for WekFest, and not succeeding, I decided to change it up. I started with a new quick render that I whipped up in Photoshop, then got to work.
http://i.imgur.com/II8RO5y.jpg
Driver side headlight installed.
Spirit Rei front bumper installed, then chopped.
Wald Black Bison bottom end chopped.
http://i.imgur.com/lDbesCc.jpg
Then the measuring began...
Since the Wald front bumper is wider and very square compared to the Spirit Rei Odyvia front, this is a rather hard task compared to the bumpers that I have had made in the past.
We ended up sectioning certain sections in order to flex the bumper a bit better into position and after centering / measuring for ground clearance, we screwed things into place.
http://i.imgur.com/3Kj0DTx.jpg
The vents will be cut off, moved to the sides, and fiberglass will be added to fill in the gap.
http://i.imgur.com/dm3uGxi.jpg
I'll show you guys what I'm doing for the grill soon...
By the way, here is my friend's S2000 that I'm excited about. We built the Weds Kranze Vishunus for it and he is doing equally as awesome custom bodywork / bumpers for his build. We'll both be showing off our cars at Wekfest San Jose next month.

Fiberglass is laid behind the metal plates. Rear is also Wald, but it's a pain because the C63 rear is round while the S13 rear is squared off. We sectioned the bumper this morning and screwed it into place. Might end up opening a mold for it because I don't want too much bondo on it. Will post photos later.

Are you going to do dual exhausts too?
Yes that is the plan, the problem is that doing a fuel cell setup is a lot of work and I will have hardly any time to do it once the car is out of the body shop. I'm probably going to try and fake a dual with tips, kind of like how ls460 tips are built into the bumper. I maybe also hold off and create a single exit exhaust rear bumper with the Spirit Rei miyabi 180sx rear. I like the look of that one a lot more.

I wasn't really feeling how the front bumper was turning out so I created a mockup again in photoshop, showed my body guy, then had it redone. Originally, the bodylines were slanting down and I really really did not want my bumper to suffer from the same thing as the original where it appears to be sagging due to sloping bodylines. The other problem was that the entire bumper was pretty much half an inch off the ground and keep in mind the whole drivetrain isn't even in yet - basically it would've been undriveable so I had the entire bottom section "lifted". The sides were done via cutting, and the middle part was sectioned, pulled in (no more sharp angle), then fiberglassed together.

Did you order already? If so from where? Guessing its going on a hatch? There's been a few ody80s done but none look good IMO. Hopefully you can pull it off

I'm going to do it to a 180SX probably and then create a flying buttress c-pillar a la Ferrari 599.
Someone needs to make a hardtop for the S13 vert though... using E46 hardtop body lines. It would modernize the square lines that the S13 windows have.

Had to re-install the coilover rings and raise the car like 2+ inches in preparation for getting it on the trailer. I didn't want to have to install and line up the bumpers and sideskirts myself later on so this just makes more sense to do.

I agree the upper door line should have been filled. It kinda looks out of place now. And is this going to be a hard parked car? Nothing wrong with it but I just figured I'd ask referring to the decision to mold those rears on.

Instead of shaving that line and making the car look plain, I did my best to make it flow (fender vent lined up, line blended into quarter panel). Also, I think it's kind of ghetto to not mold on overfenders - just my opinion though.
As for being hard parked... well I did not build it for show but time will be the teller of what I end up using the car for. Mainly, I wanted to be happy with the way it looked first because that's what motivates me to drive it rather than let it sit in my shop. Free time even on weekends is a rare thing but I'd love to take it on a nice weekend drive up in the mountains with friends and maybe do some open drifting events once in a blue moon. I don't intend to smash the car into anything if that is what you're implying.
SupaDoopa
08-22-2013, 12:36 PM
Yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at. The rears normally aren't molded on so they're easier to derivet, fix underlying damage, and replace them if needed. Molded on rears is kinda fingers crossed no one is stupid enough to hit you or you have TOO much fun and tap something. Granted it's fixable, just more hassle.
Regardless, the car looks stellar. I can't wait to see it sit on it's wheels you intended for it. Any ETA on that even if it's just a side profile teaser?
