hi guys...
los angeles modifed exhaust ticket where to go?
my question is where do I go to get my modifed exhaust ticket resolved? I went to 1945 hill st, in downtown la... and when I waited there for a hr for the guy to get back on lunch break he just told me that they dont do that there... yet on the ticket all it said to do was go there...
the officer who gave me that ticket told me it'd cost me nothing to get it resolved just replace with oem muffler... then the guy at the 1945 hill st told me it'd cost me $108 for an inspection... he didn't tell me where to go either...
useless government....
do you guys know where I can go in Los angeles to get this inspection for free or a lower cost then $108, i'm assuming you guys may know where to go to get this resolved.
thanks again!

Yeah if you're an idiot.
If you swapped exhaust to OEM, go camp out at a taqueria, Starbucks, or anytime you see a cop to have them sign off the fix it ticket. It will be $25 total when you go pay it off.
If not, go to the courthouse where you will need to pay for the ticket and have a sheriff sign it off.

I went to the courthouse to have the sheriff sign it off and he told me that they don't do modified vehicle exhaust inspection... I apparently have to go to a referee they are apparently only located in trade schools like los angeles trade tech, whitter comm college...
are you telling me that i can just go to the courthouse and just get this resolved without having any "authority" verify? or do i need one to get it done?
sorry for the noob question first time ever getting a ticket and it's a terribly irritating process... never knew how inefficient are local governments are... actually useless if you ask me.

Exhaust tickets can be ref tickets, you probably have to go to a smog ref for a COMPLETE inspection. I see by your other post that you already found that out though...

I'll just reply to all of you jackasses at the same time. If you think Cali sucks then you must think that the entire import scene sucks. Because this is where it ALL started. The entire car culture of the US was born in Cali. You're all just copying our shit. Get a life and talk shit about something else. While you're at it sell all your modified cars and buy a stock camry.

If you don't want to deal trying to getting it signed off? You can just go ahead and pay the fine for the ticket though I can tell you it won't be cheap.
Weird, I guess the cop who gave me you the ticket was a real ass. Majority of the time they would give a fix it ticket.
I know on the ticket, there's a check box if an officer can sign it off or not. However, it seems you'll need to go to the state ref and have it signed off that way or pay the fine.

It is indeed the same person you would go to, to get an engine swap approved. Also different ref's react differently to these kinds of things. I went to the LA Trade tech ref for an exhaust ticket once. He wanted to do a complete underhood inspection as well as run the car on the dyno at 3k. Now this guy was complete idiot. Decibel levels off a engine revving do not change whether its revved up to 3k in neutral or run underload on a dyno, that is sonic Physics. Revving at 3k is revving at 3k decibel level wise.
I tried to explain that to him but he would not listen. He also went on the say any engine swap is Federally Illegal which is not inherently correct either.
He had been indoctrinated by some hardcore CARB official and this is the way he thought.
I would not be going to him to for any legal engine swap approvals. LOL I advise you steer clear of LA Trade Tech because of that.

No the ticket I was talking about was 2008. Its still a fix ticket. Its just for a period there the funding for the refs was not there so they shut down the refs. So people had no choice but to pay the ticket.
The state is broke, Sacremento Politicians are drunk on spending money they don't have and won't agree to any spending cuts. Kinda like our Federal Government. One side wants to raise tax's but does not want to cut the whole over spending fiasco. The other wants to cut spending but not raise tax's. Both things have to be done to correct the mess on a state and federal level.
Oh and before the Cali bashers start in. Its not like several other states, are not in the same mess on being broke and spending.
Its a problem with Politicians all over the country. They want to spend and have their perks and try to fix solely on raising tax's. Both sides of it are fucking up royally and taking the public down for it.

really... wow I must be having some bad luck, i scheduled my appointment at the LA trade tech one just because it was closest...
Thank you so much for the heads up,
question, have you ever been to the whittier location? wondering if that one is any better?
Did that man actually do an underhood inspection on your motor? because i'm just going there to get my ticket resolved not have more things written on me... when i called and asked the lady on the phone if they would poke around for more infractions, or only deal with the said infraction on my ticket. she basically told me you wont know till you get there. i was pretty.... yeah...
please advise sir! i appreciate the heads up and wonderful information.

Yes he did do a underhood inspection. I went in there thinking just like you that he would listen to the fixed exhaust and call it a day, I was mistaken. LOL
If everything is kosher on your car go there, though make sure everything is in good shape, because if he finds anything amiss? He will make you go fix it and come back. This happened to me and I was scheduled for court to show the judge the signed off ticket. I did not have time to correct the issue and get back to the ref before court. The judge was not willing to give me an extension and I was forced to pay the fine without the writeoff discount.
So ya maybe just avoiding that particular ref will help, though go with caution all refs are different to certain extent. Some are lenient than others.
I do agree this post should've been posted in the southwestern section.
Where it states "correctable" if the box is checked yes, then you should be able to get it signed off if you installed a stock exhaust. I believe I received the same code and was able to get it signed off. Since your close to your due date, I would suggest trying to get it signed off from another officer and see if they are able to do it. If not, ask the reason why and they should be able to explain it to you.

where did you go to get yours done if you do not mind me asking?
CHP-Southern Division (http://www.chp.ca.gov/depts_divs_offs/501.html)
these are the offices i found, can I just go to any of these? or? is there a special one i am not aware of?
kind of looking to do this asap as my date is near...
also, is there a need for me to get an appointment? like the referee? or is the chp just a walk in sort of thing?
Thank you everyone for your help, sorry for the misplaced thread, just in a hurry and i know chat gets more hits than regional.

It's not possible to get that signed off because you have an rb25. Which they don't have specs to go by. They have to have specs at which RPM to record the dB. RB engine is not in the system.

I have to LOL at this. Some of us new about this shit way before your shit state and the rest of the country for that matter (on a mainstream level). Drifting and 240's in general were very underground in the USA import world so to speak. People used to not know wtf my car even was. Now every kid in highschool will know wtf it is. Your crap state was the Honda ricefest capital. Nothing more. That was the import car scene back then. If its the home of anything, its the home of the ricer. :picardfp: all you want. There are always people who are ahead of the curve. California did not start shit for me personally and many others. Which in that case the entire import scene did suck, it was 99% honda with the occasional expensive supra, rx-7 300zx. California is only the "start" of the import scene for the MAINSTREAM followers. That is all it can claim. I knew a few old military guys who were in japan in the early 90's who used to know what car I drove. They knew all about drifting and the likes to, how the usa and japan cars were different etc. Took me by surprise. Other than that nobody would even recognize a 240 in the import scene back then except other nissan/datsun enthusiast.

Just call State REF or CHP and make appointment.
Pay fees for test, make sure to test with aftermarket exhaust as long as its under 96.5dB. If there is something that says what brand the exhaust is, make sure the person notes it on the certificate that you get. Otherwise it will say unknown.
Take ticket to court and show judge that you have a California legal exhaust and order them to refund you the fees.
If your listening to what cops say "put stock exhaust" Your little bitch boy getting slapped around and its not good for you or the community. Demand that the cop shows you next time what is exactly modified about your exhaust and show you the section in the book.
Tell the cops the car is 20 years old and Nissan doesn't sell exhaust parts for the car. So this is the exhaust you bought from a shop and it stated legal for California.

I composed a little list of the "hot" things that rest of the country bit off of that started here. This is just off the top of my head, I'm sure that there's more...
Hot rodding: Cali
Organized street racing: Cali
Oldest purpose built racetrack in the US: Cali
Modded imports period: Cali
"JDM": Cali
Drifting: Cali
240 scene: Cali
Hellaflush/wheel fitment: Cali
Car culture started here, that is inarguable fact. I'm sure there were small groups scattered about the country that were on point as well, but we perfected it. That's why you say we brought it to the mainstream. Cali is, has been, and always will be on the cutting edge of any automotive style. Go talk to your redneck buddies about how much it sucks because it's not important here.
Hating on smog laws is fine and dandy, our smog laws are strict as fuck. They're strict for a REASON. That's because we have a HUGE population and we all own cars. Smog laws have to be strict to keep pollution in check. As I grow older I've learned and understood that more and more. So it's time to evolve, to make the next step, to push harder towards legal swaps/mods. Shit-can the SR's and RB's, and dust off the VQ's. Guess what, our smog laws are spreading. It's only a matter of time untill everyone has to deal with the same shit. Maybe you should grow-up and evolve a little yourself...

i got one too a year ago and barely have court next month. court Extensions are fun. i got one on my srt4 and the officer said it was too loud to be stock. we argued and well he gave me a fix it ticket.
Went to chp and said i have to go to a ref. Screw that i have paper work that says the srt4 dosent come with a muffler.
anyways im gonna fight it, and instead of the ref im gonna go to a dealership and they can sign that its the stock one. Also post a pic of your exhaus if it looks somewhat stock and he didnt take a db test then you have a good chance of fighting it
Use extensions on court dates if you have them!

Law enforcement is not allowed to write off on any CARB violations anymore. The Ref at pierce college was cool but when they stopped funding he left. Haven't had to deal with the new one yet.

What...Really??? Every "fix-it" ticket i've ever had i've just taken it to CHP (alta dena) or the sherriff's office (temple city, super laid back) and they just write it off and you go pay the fine at the court...but maybe they have changed it now, to where they don't sign off any "carb" related tickets even if marked "correctable"? can anybody confirm this for sure?
Regardless, if it's only 108$ for the violation...just bend over and pay the fine---you dont have to hassle with fixing it or getting it signed off.
i live in hollywood gotten 3 exhaut tickets. first 2 times went to chp on cherry with a stock exhasut they signed it off. 3rd time i didnt even take my car chp wount even get off there butts to check.
its not that hard. should only be $25 last one i got was in september.

more importantly is WHEN you received your last exhaust ticket more so then how you fixed it. I understand that you put on a stock exhaust and go there and they write it off, as that is what i did and this was not the case. if you know of any "good" chp offices that still do it, list the address please so any of us who are unfortunate to get this can go there and resolve this and save some money.
Thanks all for your informative answers
I myself am going to head down to altadena office to see how it goes. Since, some of you mentioned that, that place works.

So, reporting back I just came back from altadena office, and the chp officer took care of it for me no big deal no fuss no smart attitude.
I think this is just a "ymmv" sort of deal.... some are asses about it some aren't.
The way I look at things when I get pulled over, "I hope the cop lets me go or just give me a height fix-it ticket." The only reason why I say height is because all I need to do is remove aero and get it signed, and re-install. No need to adjust the height and it's always good to keep OEM body panels :D.

Seems like the law has been changed in the import scene for quite sometime since, I've never really gotten fix it ticket in any of my 240sx. Actually, never. Had em plenty on my civic, but even that, I'd slap a stock exhaust on, drive it over to my local police or CHP, they tell me to rev it up and hold it and sign it off. pay $15 at the clerks window then bounce. Differs from an engine mod because I'd have to see a Ref' station but even that was cake.
