im still searching around for a good price on an sr around 2200 shipped would be sweet, cause thats what i got, but anyway my friend asked why i just dont build my ka then turbo. i thought about it and it made more sense for the price of the sr to have a built and half way turboed ka. im wondering who here has one and who built it for them. i dont think its something i can do myself. im looking around for someone who makes manifolds also. i have a 93 and i know fmax and greddy makes kits for the 95-98 and the electronics and the only difference. if anyone has a build ka fill me in on the costs and the details.

there are alot of peiced together kits thatd get u done below 2200, search for stuff by AceInHole , he has a awsome do it your self pieced together kit. and his kit he put together i dont think cost that much. i m pretty sure u d have enough left over to get a jwt ecu, cause the s13 maf isnt as hackable

you just missed ka-t manifold groupbuy by etd-racing a while ago man...
$350...
but you can buy one from jgstools.com (log style).. z31 turbo..
370cc SR injectors.. intercooler+pipings...

lets do some calculation...
lets assume that your KA in your car has low mielage and good compression...

KA - free (in the car already)
turbo manifold - $250+shipping (JGStools.com)
Z31 turbo - under $150 used (or any sized turbo you want)
370cc SR injectors - ~$100 for sale forums or $140 from jgycustoms.com
Walbro fuel pump - ~$100 ebay
Intercooler - sidemount or front mount.. your choice.. lets just say 1gen eclipse smic.. ~$50
1gen eclipse bov ~$50
pipings ~$100

total ~$800 for the huge stuff

as for fuel management.. you can go JWT, hacked maf, e manage, safc, or whatever.. lotsa choices with different prices...
plus.. small parts such as clamps.. oil return, oil feed, welding downpipe/pipings, gauges..

pm me if you wanna know my future ka-t setup
but i think $2200 is more than enough for initial/most basic ka-t setup

i have 223k miles on my motor thats why i was gonna get a swap, so to turbo i def. need to rebuild. as of now i have a hks ss bov, apexi safc, and some defi gauges from my old turbo civic. im gonna do some more searching, cause if i can send my motor out to be rebuilt for a good price i think i will. the only thing is fuel management.

SimpleS14

besides sending out your motor....have you thought about getting a lower mile (in the 100Ks) motor and getting that one rebuilt...then working on other ish while the motor is outside the car?

yeah i figure i could pick one up for around $500 or so, right? right now im prepping my car for paint. im taking my sweet ass time sanding all the old paint off and removing minor dents, trying not to use bondo, but in some spots i have too. am i right about the price of a used ka24de?

SimpleS14

am i right about the price of a used ka24de?

no....because price varies on who is selling the motor. Some people get them hella cheap ($100~)....while others can go for $500+

Price also varies on the rebuild....and I can't give you a guesstimate right now.

don't even bother about building up the KA. They're pieces. Really. SR20 is the way to go. I don't know why ppl bother turboing the KA. It's a truck motor for God's sake

I once got schooled by Dousan_PG for calling the KA a truck motor, and feel I should pass on what I learned from it! Study up bud...

And a few months later, what do you know? I'm debating whether I'm gonna spend money on this (http://www.importperformanceparts.net/imports/pek-nissan.html) KA rebuild kit for $879 (includes WISECO pistons/ROSS performance rings!) to rebuild my blown motor, or just buy a stock KA and spend the money saved on suspension goodies.

Oh, and if you think building the KA motor is for panzies, check out this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2467918655&category=6396#ebayphotohosting)
KA24DET powered 240 pushing 410rwhp at just 17.5psi!

Here (http://attila.sdsu.edu/~mmikse/240sx/ka24det_large.wmv) is a video. That motor is tuned to perfection, and the car is selling for only like 12 grand!

dont limit your knowledge in just SR
i (or any other ka-t guys here) am not saying that ka-t is the way to go...
i consider ka-t as an alternative..
its nice if you have alternatives to choose from. especially if you're on a budget.

That's a good price for pistons/rings/bearings and gaskets. If I were you rebuilding a KA, I'd also spend for the rods. Only like $450 and you'll know you have a bulletproof bottom end. And the labor to install them wouldn't be even slightly increased. You need to put some rods in.. new or used wouldn't matter. Also, to answer your question, I too have a built KA and a -T.

I dont know what is more shocking, you have been here sence 2002 and you still talk like your a writer in Super Street, or that you have 200 posts, wow.. KAs own you, less expensive, everyone does the whole bs with sr's saying their have more potental.. so what, who ever takes advantage of their potential, like 5% of everyone with SRs, the rest get bolt onts and T28s and call it it day..

i picked up a set of ross pistons for 350, with total seal rings and ross rings, i heard bad stuff about total seal so i think i ll use ross, im gonan get a arp bolt kit, and cometic head gasket and new oil pump and bearings then do some head work for my ka-t, i dunno yet weather i ll get crower rods or just go with stockers with arp bolts but it should be a pretty good set up taking on a sr easy for durability.shouldnt cost much more than 1200-1500 ish for my bottom end.... head: pdm cams, bronze guides and new seals maybe polish the valves my self. little bit of porting polishing in the head myself. and then maybe some stiffer springs. luckily i have access to alot of tools so i can do most of the work my self, about all i need the shop for is the boreing, maybe i ll have them put the bearings in and torque the bottom end just for safty..

but that woudl be a pretty built ka that didnt cost more than 3000, and from other set ups people push 400hp+ on that and it would be durable, and once u start upgradeing sr's ull run into the same costs. when i wanted a sr i started to look at parts to make it like i wanted and it would have been 2500 for most of the motor set then another 2000+ in parts so for 4500 i decided a built ka with a pieced together turbo kit would be better since i already had pdm cams and a pulley and other little parts

As much as i like the sr20's, i should damn well get one since my brother is in japan, but im just weird like that and im trying to go KAT. I just want to be as different as possible. Im also trying to keep the JDM bling on my car to a minimum. I just think id rather have a KAT than an SR20, for one, i love torque, 2. its the same price, 3. More power. Just my $.02. :D

A B18 Bolts right up to a Geo Metro, doesnt even need new motor mounts, haha, and somehow you can make it work.. I guess their fast as fuck..

Speaking of putting Awesome motors in cars that hardly seat 2.. My friend is getting ready to get a Ford Festiva, and put a 323 GTX Turbo 1.6l in it.. Lets just say 1700lb with 210HP sounds fun to me

The only downside I see about turboing a KA is weight. I love keeping my car as light as possible. I have another KA engine out in the back that I have been parting out and I always think about slowly rebuilding it for a high HP turbo applicatioin but then I think about how heavy that thing is. I'd do anything to drop a few extra pounds out of my car and if that means going SR, I will definitely do it.

makes me think of one that I saw a while back with a SHO engine/transaxle into the BACK of a festivia....RWD+V8

KA=great engine. Its a nissan. Its pretty large for a 4 cylinder, and can be built in a variety of different ways, but I'm just spewing the same stuff everybody else is doing!:blah:

I would turbo a KA... if I was going to stay below 500whp. Unless some girdle reinforement is made... I think you'll have problems with bottom end longevity at those levels. One of my buddies in Miami was telling me that they had a problem breaking cranks at about 575whp. They finaly figured out that girdle was flexing.. allowing for the crank to flex and break. So, they designed a beefier billet girdle for the motor, and haven't had a problem since then. But, this cost a lot of money to do. I am all about big stroke turbo 4 bangers.. I recently build a Spec V QR25DE and put a GT3040 on it. It's got hellacious amounts of TQ! But, for me.. the SR was just logical. I plan on breaking 600whp.. and it's proven/cheaper for me to get there.

hey clean, just to let you know there is a guy that does rebuild engines in our area, and from what i know hes pretty good at it. his shop is called spindler engineering. its just one guy that does it. try giving him a call if your still intersted in reworking that tired motor :D. pm me for his #, oh yeah what is this that i hear you have a fm just sitting around?

cold, i talked to a friends dad who built 3 different engines for his 69 z28, he said he would love to help me out and help me build if i just get the stuff and a fsm. i want to get around 350ft/lbs so im thinking a t3/t04e .68a/r from sheapturbos.com will do it and the mani from etdracing. i have alot of stuff just sitting around also, but not sure what an fm is? also should i use 550 or 720 injectors, i know its a vauge ? but for tuning all i have now if a safc and was gonna do jwt ecu. like i said im still searching and trying to figure out for sure what i want and need for the #'s i want vs. $$$$

colds14
03-29-2004, 12:14 AM
fm=front mount. the reason why i said check into spindler is he has all the equipment to build heads and bottom ens properly. from what i have seen 550 should be fine, if you wanted to you could run the 720s and just tune it, it will save money in the long run too. the figureing out the #'s vs. $$$$ thing i cant help you there im bad at that. also i tried looking for sheapturbos.com......no luck finding them.............

yeah thats what i thought you meant but my browser was acting up last night so it wouldnt load anything..nice paper weight:-). you know how it is around here people bable all the time thats why i asked. yeah i do work alot......but its worth all the money that i can make so. as for what i have planned my wheels are on order it will be awhile before i get them though. and i will probably be ordering the k-sport coilovers today if i get the chance theres a nice group buy on them but im still not sure if i want those or not.
