I finally have decided to create one of these cool threads. The car was purchased as a (barely) rolling shell. What a PITA to get it home(on a two wheel dolly behind a limping SUV)...story was I am the third owner after granny and some kid who wanted to build but went broke. It is a pretty clean chassis but nothing amazing. Now lets note this aint no effin' quick build,... its gonna be a while. This is a one man show, no professionals, no 'experts' just some home brew garage built...shit (EDIT: I have sourced a few aluminum TIG jobs - to hard working friends of mine) I am learning a shit ton along the way and hope to help spread knowledge in the process.
This is the first photo I have of the shit bucket

While I was on the search for a solid chassis to build I decided to get to work on re-building my SR setup. Previosly blown up in my last car...machine shop...blah blah blah

I then started to tear the car down, give it a full inspection. its a pretty clean shell.
Previous owner did this killer black spray paint job on the bay. I was not too concerned as i planned to tub the thing anyways.

Next up was the tubbing process. I basically taught myself to weld doing them. its not the greatest but its strong enough. As with alot of this stuff it is my first time doing serious metal fab, welding etc so lots to learn

Thanks for kind words fellas.
Once I had the tub work done it was time to drop the motor in and do a mockup so I could get oil filter relocation, intercooler, radiator, etc mounted before actually painting it.
I knew from the start I wanted to run a HMIC setup. At first i was going to run the PBM one but after seeing some stuff on here figured I would go a different route
I picked u a core and some cast 90's. Cut the ends off the core and cut a bit from each 90, you can see the KOYO rad covered in cardboard also. needed that to make sure it would fit
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8494/8282981840_accbc821f7.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/
[email protected]/8282981840/)
The rad was cheap and in decent shape, should hold up for a while

[email protected]/8281925383/)
I cant take credit for the welds, I have zero TIG experience...one day

[email protected]/8327825252/)
Some drilled and tapped posts on top for mounting to the rad support.

Yes sir I searched for pictures/info all over for ideas. Came across yours. Good shit, I like your car!
time for the mockup
I took this silly little 2 liter...

put it in the bay...I even slapped on the cross member first.

I actually got a little out of order with the intercooler post. First the motor went in, then welding - to make sure things would fit properly. At this point I welded on some tabs for my PS cooler. YES I am a poor welder ( its called learning). The cooler is just generic from vatozone. I was never a fan of the stock cooler line, also didn't even get one with the car..

Made this throttle cable bracket, I have a SOHC car and throttle cable is super short. Meaning I will need to source a DOHC one.

Another thing, I need a steering rack. the one that came with the car was..massacred. Someone beat it up previously and I could not remove the end caps even...
Check back soon ladies, I've been working hard!

Trailer fenders look so much better than using a 55 gallon drum like I did. Looks really nice and probably worth 60-100 dollars they cost versus the "my free drum is worth the pain in the ass of cutting it all out. Keep it up.

They couldn't have worked any easier. I ordered the largest I could find from etrailer dot com. I want to say it was like 45$ done deal. Plus you only need one for the whole bay. Got lots of ideas from the tub thread for anyone looking to do this.
Ill search around for some pics, I also did a good bit of cutting up into the seam weld and above the tire for some super low clearance.

Yeah Ive seen the trailer fenders, I just thought I was so smart getting this 55 gal drum for free and fabbing it myself, yada yada yada. Just a huge pain in the ass. I would like to see the pictures of how you went about dealing with that. Ive been stitch welding and what not on my bay as well, but I'm always looking to see how others went about it. I need to update my build as well with the progrees Ive made over the last couple days. I also find it funny that my car use to red and the owner did an equally killer black paint job in the bay that I can scrape off with my finger nails. Look forward to more progress updates.

Man that had me cracking up
not so much an update here, but some shots of how I modded the fender wells
here you can see I split it at the seam

and here you can see I 'plated' it in, yes I suck at welding and metal fab. As I said I am learning

mockup has been completed, heres just a lil teaser. got more pics to upload. motor comes out and PAINT
Oil filter relocation, fuel pressure gauge, stock fuel filter holder, and a Z32 filter. look closely, yes those are 2x4 motor mounts..ill be running poly filled oem one once motor goes back in. those were just holding the place for now.

before u install the subframe make sure to bash the pinch weld on the unibody or your ruca is going to hit it or get fancy and notch it for ultimate clearance
another thing i noticed is u welded up the whole for the engine harness to come threw the firewall it looks ?
KoukiMonsta
01-14-2013, 12:45 PM
Good thing the subframe went on already..and I forgot about doing that. Ill try and notch it I'm thinking. Oops
And yea I plugged the harness and HVAC holes. I want to run a plug/bulkhead connector for engine harness through the firewall. (Like the real ballers) But I don't know a lot about them yet. Or ill put it more through the tunnel so it's hidden. Wire tuck is the name of the game

If your talking about a mil spec plug its totally worth the investment if you are going to be pulling the motor a lot.
I'll be getting one done on my chase bays harness once I get the car going.
I know Jordan's innovation does them for a fee.

Nice build man! Coming along nicely. I was in the same boat as you, never touched a welder and one day I just picked it up. What I've found best when learning, cut a practice piece and do some welds on it, play with the settings some till you get a nice weld. I've learned to run the welder hotter to get a nice burn in but if you do make sure you move the bead fast :)

I took this pics after i made it. I never remember to take in progress pics since its just me working and im usually dirty and in the zone lol
I used the mounting points for the AC compressor. the top one is a pivot point and the lower to tension the belt simply using a turnbuckle.
also note sweet XRP fitting from Toby. Re-did the high pressure PS line with xrp stuff. its great quality!

color is Eastwood- hot rod black. i was going for a bit more flat color as to let the engine itself 'pop' more. first time using a real paint gun id say i did a fair enough job.

have no fear, more (better) pics soon enough, its not the greatest job..that pic is a bit deceiving. i was learning to use the gun as i went through, next time ill be able to do a better job.
but as i stated in the beginnning this whole build is a massive learning process for me, before this all i did was bolt on mods.
but thanks for the kind words brotha!

alright finally an update..
Ive got some stuff back in the bay. Finalized how the brake lines will run. As per this entire build, my first time dealing with flaring and bending brake lines. I like how it came out, and most important it takes care of the hideous hardlines up on the firewall...(brake booster is another story i havent found a good solution for that)
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8388/8513306175_055bfffa66.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/
[email protected]/8513306175/)
I also ave those extra large oil filter. took my summit relocation block to vatozone and tried a bunch of filters till i found a larger one that fit.
you can also see the connection in rear brake lines, slightly altered but from there back its stock. the fuel hard lines will remain the same as im going to run the oem fuel filter holder.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8251/8514417528_855bacda27.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/

and the lines running through interior. and the 3 pedals! got a legit ma nual brake pedal too.

i undercoated my brake booster, love me some texture

heres an oil filter comparison. the left is for a sentra w/ sr20. they couldnt tell me what the K&N was for but its much larger.

since i did a 5 speed conversion i had to piece junk together anyways. decide to do something about the clutch line also. got an isis line and changed up the fitting for the slave end. straight line master to clutch no silly damper.

First ill mention this isn't standard old school stainless line. It's called 'poly armour' I got it at autozone. I can clearly tell it is more pliable and easier to bend/manuver around. I def recommend it after playing with both types.
I had 5 of 6 flares done by a shop with hydraulic flaring equipment. I have used the cheap tool from summit before, and used it for the sixth flare. Though it was easier for me to just have them done. That said the flare I did seems to hold fluid.

Not sure yet honestly.
This build isn't going anywhere fast.. I did my best to enlarge the front wheel wells to the 'max' so down the road I can put some serious rubber in that bitch. And stay low.

I am using high pressure steel AN fittings for the high pressure line. Since I never had any oem ps lines with the shell it was a no brainer. Ordered XRP stuff from Tody. So worth it, awesome product. For pump feed, return, and to the cooler it's low pressure with just hose clamps. The reservoir lines sneak up behind the booster. Tight fit but man it's dang near perfect.
That looks awesome. I hope you keep the car and vc red.
The car will always be red, vc I imagine will change at some point.

Ive been doing work. hope you fuckers like it
So i want to put the ecu, fuses, relays etc in a location that allows for easy access. to swap fuses, test shit, check ecu codes ect.
so the glovebox seemed like a brilliant spot for this, hidden but easily opened. so i got this setup going on
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8113/8669123519_522464efc3.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/
[email protected]/8669123519/)

So at this point ive spent a couple months looking over the fsm wiring diagrams trying to get a solid grasp and now i really understand them. as always in this build, this is my first time. and i wil be entirely re doing everything. this is only going to have "racecar" wiring no accessories.

decided to go a little overkill on relays, i like the idea of seperati ng things so its easy to determine the circuit at fault in the case of issues down the road...of course inevitable.

Looks really good man. The low mount power steering is a cool idea!
thanks man, love your build
Ok so last post i had this fucking genious idea to mount the electric bs in the glove box. That plan has since been trashed. basically the space retrictions were kiling me, it got super cluttered super fast.
so i did some thinking, and some drinking, and came up with this even sillier idea. i rele liked the idea of using the glovebox to hide it all. i gutted the box itself and will just be using the front portion as a 'door' to the fuses and such. everything is mounted to a piece of wood i had laying around... so far seems like a much better plan.

[email protected]/8691309146/)
may have gone overkill on relays, better safe than sorry. i separated as much of the electric systems as possible in the whole build. this way when issues occour its easy(er) to troubleshoot where the problem is.

at this point ive got power to the ecu, engine, starter, and fuel pump.
lights, cluster, etc will be coming soon.
fluids in the car, brakes and clutch bled!
Lets also note the bay is fully wired! Pretty well tucked, no ugly brake lines on firewall. But that damn booster line is still there. Throttle cable bracket is a mockup, and the cable is too. Need a s14 or dohc cable since this is a sohc car it's too short I just put it in for looks..doesn't connect.

not a real update, some pics that never made it.
dont think i mentioned it, no wiring runs through the wheel wells. headlight and fan come up the passenger frame rail. all the wiring goes through the ac water dump tube hole, almost out of sight. its amazing seeing the space under the fender since i cut it all up too. hopefully no rubbing.... and very low is the plan
In these pics there's no wiring..

*****This update is kinda a big deal guys*****
cluster and gauges have power, blue leds will be swapped for white ones. the red "11.5" is a voltage reading, just a digital display i epoxied into the cluster

So at this point it is time to give the first attempt at starting the motor! fingers crossed my wiring is correct....
and it doesn't start...
starter turns, fuel pump is on, pressure at rail...after a bit i smell fuel
turn it over some more, backfire loud as hell.
at this point i begin to think about the ignitor wiring, essentially firing order. i found 2 sources of contradicting info on which color wire is what cylinder. decided top de-pin and swap cylinders 1 and 2...
FIRED RIGHT UP!!

http://i.videobam.com/jobCf.jpg (http://videobam.com/jobCf)
Whats a better way to host videos? my usual flickr account is "full of videos" for basic user..cuz that site sucks balls
didnt leak any oil which is cool, busted a coolant hose as soon as some pressure was built after bleeding..also need a new brake booster.
So at this point im pretty pumped that the motor is running, but ive got a big issue...the head was never really serviced, it previously overheated, valve guides are worn, and leakdown proved lots of leakage past valves..
it is evident the motor has low vacuum (~10 in hg) and a leakdown did verify its from the head. So this is sorta shitty, but i expected it. the head will be serviced via Mazworx, slap in on with new apexi HG and we should be rolling..but thats gonna take some time.
In the mean time i will begin working on the interior, got some good stuff in store.

I'm curious to see what you got going on there.
I first checked the interior thread, and then the build section. Where I found 2 posts you made..
The first being and amazing cluster surround you made. Which is superd sir, I debated putting my wideband in one of the vents. Ultimately decided against it due to being too low, to look at while hammering the throttle!
My plan is way more basic, and I am not good with filler/sand/fill/sand type thing... It's far from perfect, but as per my usual mantra it's my first time.
Stay tuned finished product soon.

That dash button delete turned out pretty slick especially for just keeping it simple like you did. Nice work on getting the pig fired up as well. Too bad your glove box setup didn't turn out like you originally hoped, that's a bummer. It turned out far better than mine did. I just half assed it to get it running and racing, because I'm a lazy shit. When will you hope to have the headwork finished and back together? Keep it up, I like that it is getting cleaned up from the inside out.

So did Mazworx have anything to say about what the issue was with your head or did you just have them go through the entire thing? Curious what the issue at hand was in that last thread(low SR vac).

After a couple conversations with mazworx (along with input from you and a couple other guys) it was clear the head was at fault.
Tore it apart, found excessive play in valve guides. And 2 bent valves. At that point it was clear, it needed some attention.
The valves weren't seating and sealing properly, thus not creating vaccum, compression, or leak down numbers up to spec.
So do it once, and do it proper. (Crosses fingers) at this point I should have everything ready to make some solid power. But there's always something.

****mild update
Car is running! Just some mild idling, vac numbers are much better. I do however have an oil leak from the HG at the back drivers side corner where there's that extra m6x1.0 bolt. Torqued it as much as a feel safe. Rele pisses me off! Nothing ever goes to plan. And I'm not pulling the head to make an attempt at rtv'ing the corner. So I'll deal with it for a while, I don't have any better ideas.
Timing and idle adjustments will be made soon. Idles around 1300, boost leak test and TPS adjustments Complete.
Heres a question? i always get code 11(and did the bit it ran before) which is for cam angle sensor. Now if the cas was truly bad would it even run? and what appears to be run well (under no load) I DO NOT have access to a known working CAS. Idk anybody with an sr. Input welcome.
Suspension update in the near future, been gathering the arms and such. Working on finding someone/somewhere to align the car. Everything is crazy out of whack since it was entirely disassembled and lightly eyeballed back together.
Stay tuned!

Glad to hear the car is running and showing improved numbers... That stupid ass bolt in the back of the head is scary. I went out and bought a bolt that has a longer length because the factory bolt doesn't utilize all of the available threads. I also RTV'd that corner when I swapped the VE head on, just as an additional precautionary measure.
Have you read through the FSM for that trouble code? Page 109 in the EC section outlines code 11.
You're in for a fun ride if you plan on driving the car a short distance to get aligned. I know when I had mine all apart it had extreme toe in in the front and toe out in there rear, car wanted to do all types of crazy things.

The things I would do to have heard you say 'rtv and longer bolt' a few weeks ago...lesson learned. I've continuously say it in this thread, this is my first full on build so I am amateur in the end.
Hey what version FSM do you use? The relevant page for mine was EC 91. Just curious? Always trying to gather resources.
Haha, yea I assume the thing will drive like crazy. Though this car isn't registered and I do not have the resources to do so as of now. (College student lifestyle) idea is to trailer it for the initial alignment since its so crazy. If I can find a trailer that is.

Did my best to explain so others could learn and spread the knowledge.
Not much has been happening here. I put a resonator in my exhaust to tone things down a bit. And I didn't even take any pics. Been super busy so that's about it. Hope to be going for a tune soon. I'll keep you posted.

Did you end up fixing the leak from the back of the head? If so, what did you do?

It seems that the leak has indeed been fixed, or at least slowed to a minimal rate. I used a longer bolt in place of the OEM one, torqued it as much as I felt was safe and prayed it would work. honestly I am surprised and probably lucky its working out.

damn i dont remember exactly, its been a while.
id say 10mm more would be the max, it may have only been 5. as those are typical bolt size increments.

Simply measure the depth of the hole and buy a bolt accordingly, it's not rocket science.
What's going on with this build anyway Kouki? Where are the burn outs?

I have just completed undergrad in mechanical engineering (as in yesterday) so time has been seriously limited through the spring semester.
I am trying to get ahold of Martin(Enthalpy) to get a tune done. We have exchanged a few emails but it is a very slow process. So I hope to do it soon and then hope things don't blow up upon doing said burning of the tires.
ps: someone help me get a job doing cool car stuff for lots of monies.

************UPDATE
Damn, it has been a while. lets be clear - this update is boring
I left of that school had me super busy and I was hoping to tune the car soon (over the summer) and have some fun driving it. So I did get the car on the dyno and the results were far from satisfactory. If you have read the whole build you will recall mention of low vacuum issues and trying to track them. This has been an ongoing issue. Many phone conversations/discussions with people who have plenty of SR knowledge left me without an answer as to why. Well the final straw was seeing that it wasn't just a vac issue, but an issue in the reverse sense of lack in power. Being that its my nature to need a real answer...I pulled the motor and tore it down with hopes of finding something to shed light on the issue.
Fast forward...motor is out and I see zero evidence of anything wrong. I did every test you could possibly think of before removing it to no avail. I am completely stumped. So I decided (financially) the best thing to do was take this opportunity to fix any issues. I cant say there really were any since I hardly drove the damn thing, but in the 1-2 years since I had done some of the work I learned more and saw areas that could use improving.
The motor....nothing special to see.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3906/15056789897_be2fc5dc7d_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/oWvZ4P)
Then I started thinking about paint, I had some spots that really didnt look so great and the paint was starting get really dirty looking being that it was flat. So I got set up with some single stage glass urethane and proceeded to completely fuck it up.(thats a trend with my build, gotta learn somehow) good thing this isnt a show car because up close it really doesnt look good..

no need to relocate the fender harness when its running down the frame rail (fucking orange peel galore)
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3870/15056619979_eca1200aca_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/oWv7yc)
At this point im getting another short block together in hopes it will finally work out. The car is in storage 200 miles from where I live and I havent seen it in months. The process of job searching/moving is not going to let much happen.

Well, it's been a while.
2015 - I got the car running and had some fun just street driving it
2016 - I started losing interest but drove it on a few nice days that year
2017 - never even looked at the car once
2018 - Interest has returned
So I decided to tackle the wiring, round 2. It was something I just wasn't pleased with and learned a lot since the first go around.
Here's a few pics from 2015? Maybe I'll keep up with this thread for a while.

I've debated parting the car out many times and starting a new project, so I can do it better with everything I've learned on this one. But I keep coming back and just re-doing shit. it's like I've built this car two or three times but keeps me learning.

Subtle details matter the most. And making/doing your own mods (if they're done in a good manner and properly) is always going to be cooler than buying off the shelf product.

When I started this thread, many many years ago, i lived in FL. Not sure if people still hate FL..
No extrude honing here. I've never been one to chase HP, so I cut some corners on stuff like that.
The car is running now. Missed a few things with the wiring, but over all turned out well.
EDIT: Some other thoughts some of you may find interested. I am running OEM HG and head bolts. Curious how it will pan out..I am an engineer by trade and have a clear understand of the testing that OEM's do vs testing aftermarket parts companies do [hint: none] So I VERY much prefer keep some stuff factory.
I also am running M10 hardware for the Turbo + Exhaust Manifold connection. And I am NOT running a gasket. I machined the surfaces and used some copper RTV.. I sorted that out a couple years ago actually, before I let the car start collecting dust...don't even remember the exact details of what I did. Let's see what happens!
I would really like to get a recirc setup for the BOV, but dont have TIG access anymore and part of me is tired of dumping money into it.
really need to sort out where to get the thing aligned so i can start actually driving it a bit more.
