Found out I'm going to be totally deaf in two months by way of four damn surgeries.

Who wants to have a contest for the worst luck? lol.

I guess that may make me the first deaf drifter.... :coold:

that really blows... hmm so is it the doctors faults or something else?

Are they 100% sure, or is it still iffy?

Wow, that sucks man. What kind of surgery is it that's going to make you deaf?

I guess that's kind of nice they're giving you two months notice though. At least it gives you some time to hear everything you really want to.
I'd start watching porno at ultra high volume, go to a few concerts, etc, etc...

I suppose you should pick up a couple books on sign language or lip reading to prepare too. :-/

Thanks guys. Not the doctors fault, its genetic I guess. I develop cholosteatomas (spellng) in both ears and they infect and tear my inner ears up. It got marginally worse lately. Before I would have surgeries every 5 or 6 years where they would remove them and rebuild my ear drums and in some cases hearing bones were removed because of infection (causing a big hearing loss). I guess everything up in there in both is infected severely and both my ear drums are ruptured and all kinds of great stuff. lol. Apparently in my right ear the 'toma is near our surrounding my facial nerve which is dangerous and whatever it is that separates the inner ear from the brain is being eaten at as well. Needless to say it sucks but I'm not going to dwell on it, c'est la vie...

Plus think of all the annoying people I'll be able to ignore!

man I feel for you, if I lost my hearing I would be seriously fucked . my ears are part of my livelihood. Its good to see you keeping your chin up about it though man. hhhmmm I suppose I might be able to get by without hearing . Bethoven did. None the less may you be the first deaf drifter who kicks ass.

Infections around the brain are serious problems so you should just think of it like this, you are sacrificing your hearing to save your life and life is the most important thing we all have.

learn to start feeling vibrations, I knew a deaf guy that loved subwoofers because he was really sensitive to vibrations. (the brighter side of things, I guess)

the way you're taking this is admirable. the reality of permanent loss of any kind is difficult to deal with because no matter how many stories one may hear, nobody thinks it will happen to them. it's almost like an instinct, or defense mechanism or something like that. anyway, even though i don't know you, i have a lot of respect for your attitude and how you're handling your future loss (online, anyway).

I used to work at a relay center (how deaf people communicate via phone/tty) and during training they gave us a brief lesson on how people live with being/becoming deaf. Apparently they like music a lot; even though they can't hear most frequencies of it they can still feel the rhythm of the beat, which is the most enjoyable part of music anyway IMO.

I'm pretty sure you can do relay conversations through the internet now too, which would be really nice, because tty machines kinda suck. Plus with all the other relatively new forms of communication (e-mail, AIM/chatrooms, text messaging, etc.) you may not even have a need for it.
Take care.

You'd better get back out to LA quick (read: within 2 months)!! It'll be the last time you get to hear my sweet voice... as I choke, puke and cough while shouting profanities at how nasty soy sauce tastes, and about how stupid I am. :) I can't imagine that being half as funny if I swore and exclaimed in sign language.

Seriously though, good luck with everything! It's definitely cool that you're taking it like you are -- most people would probably be going crazy and/or slipping into depression.
Take good care!

That had to be one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time, and don't worry I haven't forgot about the "deal". If the D'Stage RUCAs aren't done soon enough I'm gonna send you Tanabe:p

I was going to give you a call last night but I was afraid it was too late. What's the time difference between Cali and Havaii? Are they on the same time?

I'm going to be fabbing up a test set of those "supports" I mentioned in one of my emails and wanted to know what you thought. If they turn out good I was going to send you a pair so you could put them through the works.

I'm really sorry to know that will possibly (think positive) happen to you. I hope the doctors can work something out and have you hear...but not so good..but still doable. You never know...they might have a chip or some shit like that and insert it into your neck or head.

Does this mean I can't call you if I want to order some Works Yamaguchi parts? <== its a joke...please don't get offended..same goes to everyone else on this board

That sucks man! I was hoping your surgeries would help with the situation. I know sign language, if they are sure you are going to loose your hearing you should start learning it now. I sent you a PM, drop me a line or e-mail. Have a few questions for you. I want to get out to Indy soon and need to know when is a good time.
