I must admit that I am very new to the FD scene, but I have been amazed my how easy it is to get my car to drift (a 97 240) however. I have a friend at work who has a eagle talon tsi (awd) and says he can't drift at all, would he actually have to use his handbrake or can he get aways with stomping it while exiting a turn like we can? (Or entering, depending on the size of your testicles) Or would he have to use careful weight shit in order to get it out. I know that my neon would not drift until the tires just let go, but what about an AWD which does have half the power going to the back... any hints or anything.. anyone been in an AWD drift???

uhm.. awd have much better grip than rwd or fwd.. and they were made to grip, not to drift...
but pretty much you'd hafta do left foot brake.. or ebrake.. or just enter really fast and hope u dont die

awd are designed not to drift. they use grip driving. when they drift, its usually an accident

with a brake balanced very biased towards the rear yes it is very possible to get sideways, 4WD can drift but they just have to use techniques. a 4WD car can power through a drift much better than a RWD car can, but it simply cannot do certain angles. go to http://www.driftclub.com to learn some techniques, it should have info relating specifically to 4wd cars

u can drift in a awd car
jst gotta go fast for more inertia to pop the back out, and u gotta know when to pop the clutch. and awd drift is diff from rwd drift....awd u drift at the end of a turn from inertia.....rwd is drift at the beginin and the end is jst a lil slide

I wonder how you can say AWD isn't made to drift when really the only form of racing that actually uses drift (well.... Sprinters and such I guess, too) are AWD.... rally racing.....
Hard to beat a good AWD drift through snow either

well sheesh dont gotta get all technical on me
it's obvious that anyone here who mentions drifting is usually referring to drifting on the street seeing as how streetracing is a much better scene in america than rallying, which nobody has the balls or the money for

and besides, rallying is on closed dirt/mud roads that give ur tires shit for grip

its like telling him "oh yea, sure u can drift! just uhm go take ur lawn, water it alot, and then have fun"
for practical reasons, i'm just saying that rwd is easier to drift in cuz it has less grip

i mean if u've watched initial d, and u see takumi's 4-wheel drift thing, that'd be prolly impossible to do in awd, breaking the traction in all four wheels during a drift and using minimal countersteering

racing on the street and drifting in snow is apples and oranges. show me a driver who drifts his/her awd on purpose

Audi 4000S Quattro. I can get pics of it sideways at my parents house.
Since my apartment at school is in the boondocks, there are a lot of dirt roads
If you're on streets taking right angle turns sideways I wouldn't exactly call that drifting..... and tell me where I can find someone sliding their car around a turn near 40mph on a street.....
(lol... besides me... doh, wait... nevermind. i didn't ask that question.)

now that we have the WRX and are about to hav ethe WRX STi, and we might jus thave a lancer evo soon, i bet we see an explosion in the popularity of SCCA rallying

I got to be pretty good at AWD drifts in dirt and snow when I had my Subaru, but I never tried on the pavement (I don't think I ever had it in 4wheel on dry pavement.) AWD drifts are fun because you can exit nice and clean pointing where you want.

I think he meant FR. FD was the 3rd gen RX-7 (RX-7 FD)

The longest drift was done in a WRX. AWDs can definitely drift. Rally driving? Lots of drifting, all AWD.

Sure, AWD can drift but they arent the best drift cars. FR reigns supreme for drifting. If you want to learn to drift buy like a 87 camaro IROC or somthing. AND BELIEVE ME, THERE IS NOTHING COOLER THEN DRIVING AROUND IN A CAR THATS SAYS "IROC" ON IT.

Drifting on a dirt/snow/sand/gravle/etc road can be done in ANY car. FF, FR, AWD, etc.

And not all Rally cars are AWD. I have seen FR rally cars.

I agree with everything said, I was just asking for opinions.... yesterday me and my friend taped ourselves doing donuts in the parking lot, it was cool cause right before we went, we met this kid tih a 91 240 (loaded) and we were both smiling and checking out each others cars at the gas station... his was 500 grand canadian (like 3 american) and it has like 25,000 miles on it... sweet deal. I beat him though coming out of the gas station so I was happy... Thanks for all the drift help to guys!

Sure... if you consider 'drifting' on a track that's covered in water for 2 hrs and 15 min drifting at all.....
i don't consider that situation real drifting.
