View Full Version : Weird Sr starting issue

I pulled my blacktop to paint the bay, put it back in and now it won't start. It was cranking fine, just wouldn't start. I know the fuel pump is going, MAF is on and connected. Then it started to crank very weakly and slugish. Tried jumping it with my other s13 and it still did it.
Very confused and frustrated at this point. Looking for some input from less irritate minds.
Thanks in advance.

you got all the fuel injector clips plugged in the right order?

As far as I know, made sure to mark them before they were removed. Super tucked harness, so they're a bit odd.

so basically, you haven't checked shit, and you want us to spoonfeed you.
get the fuck back in the garage, check the basics, and report back.
1. do you have spark/injectors firing?
2. is your battery fully charged?
3. did you perhaps forget to reattach all grounds?
4. profit.

All the grounds have been cleaned and checked, injectors are firing, have spark. Tried starting with and without the car being jumped. Still nothing. All I can think of is the timing may have been altered at some point or it's to cold to start. The only thing done to the engine when it was out was the oil being changed, a new alternator, and the oil filter sandwich plate being re-tightened.
It sounds like the starter isn't spinning fast enough, like it's hitting compression and just stopping.

Warmed up a bit today so I tried to start it again. Charged the battery, has fuel, air, and spark, checked all the grounds, starter is spinning fine. At my wits end ith it, still won't start or even ignite one cylinder.

quadurple check grounds,...just because
being that the bay is freshly painted,..im sure you scrapped down to bare metal where the grounds connect right?
how did you check the injectors were firing?
id imagine if they have been firing but the engine hasnt turned over yet,.. you would have flooded the cylinders with fuel by now and it wouldnt even be trying to crank

Did u reconnect the ground on the back of the coil packs? thats an important one thats easily overlooked.

^^^^^ Had the same problem. Painted the bay and worked for a month, and started to boogle down now. Overlooked the ground on the coilpack harness but checked the resistence on them and there still good. Changed the harness just to be safe and still wouldn't start.
Try checking the ignition relay (or all the relay), make sure the CAS is right, and your ecu is grounded properly.

Is your under dash plug hooked up? The brown or white plug
The car will start without the maf hooked up and the tps, It won't start with the cas not hooked up or the coil packs.
Make sure you have more grounds than the factory cause It's crap, Go into your engine bay there is 3 master grounds. 2 right behind each headlight make sure to sand off any paint there and also one right next to the brake master. make sure those have good connection.
Show us some pictures of your setup

How are you checking for spark? If you're just pulling the coil pack and using a random plug then I'd check and clean or replace plugs that are in the engine. I've seen it numerous times where the plugs are new but on initial start up they carbon up and won't spark.

If you have fuel, air, and spark, then the only other thing is compression/timing.

Compression was even and high across the board, pulled each plug and injector to make sure they were firing and sparking. Went over it all with a volt meter and everything read fine. All grounds were sanded and scraped to bare metal.
Going to replace the spark plugs. Concerning the CAS, if I have the motor at TDC with the 1st cylinder cam lobe pointed towards the intake manifold, where should the CAS be set? Or what's the best way to reset the CAS?

You probably reversed the fuel lines on reinstall.

Fuel lines were the first thing I checked had that issue with my friends s13b. I Have an odd feeling the ecu may be fried, trying to try know down a friend with one I can borrow.
Just had this issue on my sr.. Did you upgrade your fuel pump?

Had a walbro 255 since I did the swap in April.
Finally resolved the issue. The ECU plug was loose somehow and the CAS was way fucking off, which I assume happened when the engine was being moved around and somthing tapped it weird.
Thanks to everyone that loaned some fresh ideas!
