front main seal

searched all ovr various forums for a write up on replacing the fron main crank seal. gonna be replacing mine this weekend thinking about doing a write up with pics all that. just want some feedback if i should do it or not. anybody gonna find this useful or would i just be wasting my time?

yeah that would actually be awesome! i have a second dual cam KA in my garage that i'm about to tear into and replace all gaskets and seals from top to bottom and then put it in my car.. i'm pretty sure the front main seal is bad because HOLY F'ING OIL LEAK! but i'm just doing everything so i dont have to do it again lol

thats probably a good idea thats what im trying to do as week! if you need any help with 240 id be glad to give you a hand im fairly new to san diego and dont got shit to do all day!

do it man! that problem comes up a lot and shops charge an arm and a leg to get it replaced! a write up would save us silvia members money (:

If this is for a sr20 you simply take the front cover off of the engine and pull the old main seal out, push the new main seal in. (Literally just using your fingers) Use a dab of silicone rtv around the perimeter of the seal. Reinstall front cover.

Maybe a KA is harder. But, the sr20 is literally so easy there would be nothing to write about.

Or you can pull the front cover along with draining the oil, pulling the lower pan, oil pickup and baffles and never having the top of the cover seal right again once you put it on.

did mine a year ago. it took me less than 30 mins to do.A write up for an sr is not necessary.

I replaced the main seal in my first KA motor (7 years ago) and it was a PITA. Wish there was a how-to back then.

It's really just that simple? That's for the KA right? I haven't seen anyone specify yet..everyone is saying that the SR is easy and the KA isn't?

That would be two pry bars and a careful hand!

OP: Honestly I wouldn't bother making a write-up on something so easy.

If you're changing your crank seal I would HIGHLY reccoment that you change your PCV valve as well. They are hardly ever changed because they're such a PITA. A lot of times a clogged PCV is the primary cause of your crank seal leak as well. You've gotta remove your alternator and lower alternator bracket to get to it. It's screwed into the backside of the timing cover under the intake mani. Just be aware that you're probably going to break the PCV hose taking it off since it's so hard from age/heat. You can use bulk hose to replace it with, but obviously the OE hose would be better. Just make sure that whatever hose you use is good for oil, NO COOLANT HOSE. Now THAT is a job worthy of a write-up!
