Hey guys.
I've been looking into getting an impact wrench and was just wondering what some of you guys are using and what you might recommend.
Not looking for anything crazy or too expensive, just doing the occasional garage stuff.

maybe something cordless?

for an impact wrench, i have a craftsman, it works great, you can't expect it to break loose really hard bolts, but for basic engine work and stuff like that it works great. for an impact gun, i have the snap on mg725, it's a badass.

I recently picked up an electric snap on impact gun, used for $200- it takes stuff off that my $600 Ingersoll Rang air impact won't get. Definitely a badass gun.

I've considered picking up something along these lines as my cheap Craftsman one won't come close to breaking the flywheel bolts or crank pulley bolts loose.

Ill probably the only on here will say abt harborfreight/chicago tools impact gun. Its cheap at $120 i believe. Ive done a lot of work from my families vehicles. Van, truck, 4 cars. Done 3 engine swap. Broke crank pulley with no problem. Done 2 timing chains 1 timing belt. It held pretty good. Lasted me 2 yrs. I had to claim the warranty because i lost my charger. They dnt sell the charger separately thats why i had to do it. It has close to 300lbs of torque. Thats my experience from this cheap impact wrench.

i've had two. the only downside is if you drop them often the case will crack and they won't warranty it. (thats the reason i bought a second one). you can always get the rubber cover that goes around the body if you're clumsy and drop shit often.

Another good thing to consider the compressor you are using to power the gun. I noticed the better the gun the more air it uses

I have the older 2135Ti and it has served me well. I would reccomend nothing less. With enough air it will be strong enough for anything. the bigger the hose you use the more power you will get out of it.
What cracked on yours? The plastic? I havent had a problem so far with mine and I have used it for....5 years or so.

mine fell off the lift and cracked on the back of it, upper right corner in the photo. they wouldn't warranty it since is was user damage, which is understandable. i went right out and bought another one tho, this time WITH the rubber cover for it.

Same gun I have. I would only recommend IR guns.

i have two ingersol older guns i use seldomly they just dont have the torque i need some times. the one i use every day and have been for the last 6 years is a old harbor freight earthquake. i have dropped it off the rack hundreds of times used it as a BFH when i get mad at a bolt. Its so battered and used you cant really tell what brand it was. It is one of the only impacts i have that can bust honda crank pulleys off every time with out having to use the service tool. I also have a really good source of air and a good air line setup. we use a 160gallons combined by 2 2stage 5-7hp compressors set at 175 psi our shop is hard lined to reels by the racks.

For most things I use my electric impact gun I bought from Toolbarn. It's a DEWALT 3/8. torquey as hell. I use the shit out of mine. I don't have an impact wrench. I rarely need them (but sometimes it would make shit a lot easier if i did have one). My best tool purhcase was my dewalt impact and 3/8 swivel impact socket set i got from ebay. a mix of snap on and matco.

Electric snap ons can remove harmonic balancer bolts, theyre legit but super expensive. Ingersal Rand came out with one even more powerful, but that is about 700$. I picked up an earthquake from harbor freight for 100$ and I ve taken my whole car apart, including FW bolts; and that was with a leaking air compressor hose, and its nice and sturdy.

I have two snap on electric impacts^ like he said. I put my wheels on with them.. I stripped my whole car down with their impact and mostly underhood with their rechargable screwgun which locks when you arent using it which allows you to breaj stubborn nots and screws loose easily .Super sweet on smaller bolts.
Spend the extra cash and get the good... Plus they fit nicely in the backseat for trips to the pull a part and make that shit easy! The screw/bolt driver was 99 and impacts were 500-600 a piece.

I have a huge air compressor and a smaller 60gal that i almost never use because of my cordless tools...
Go cordless. You eill love it. The investment may be expensive but the reward is never having to hear that thing compress!

I have a 3/8ths cordless snap on impact that I can't live with out also. It was pricey but it paid for itself in the first few days of using it. You can work so much faster with a cordless

Ahhh, gotcha. I will keep that in mind. Thanks for the heads up.
Just FYI, Craftsman has a 3/8ths electric impact that usually goes on sale for 89$ with battery and charger. It is pretty damn good for the price. I took a lugnut off with it.(it struggled a bit. I wouldnt do it often) But its good for the price. The only thing that I dont like is after a good bit of use the retainer doesnt want to retain heavier sockets/extensions/etc as well.

Milwaukee M18 series stuff IMO is the best thing going. Same thhing as the snapon, without snap on price. Don't get me wrong those new IR ones are fancy and nice, but a bit steep for the home use guys.

The other nice thing with cordless is no need for a compressor, as much power as a 'mid grade' air gun, and best of all "PORTABLE". We've got M18 1/2 drive (and drills, and 1/4 drive, and sawzalls) at our shop, and I've got a set at my house as well. THe Lithium Ion batteries last FOREVER too.

If cost is a concern, don't foget looking at plug in 110 Impacts...they are equally as good and a smidge cheaper than cordless impact.

Mac Tools AWP050C, seriously this thing is light as fuck, probably the smallest most compact 1/2" impact on the market and it's very powerful for it's size. Got it on sale for $398

Several different options here.

Air
Cordless
Wired

I have used all three and air is scary sometimes and will easily break bolts. Wired is good and lasted about as long as the Cordless, but neither I had could break a RX7 Flywheel bolt loose.

I don't mind spending about $150 on a Wired/Cordless because I expect them to die within the year! The details like Craftsman doesn't support their electrical tools for more than a year, where Matco or Snap-on does makes a big difference!! Just weigh your options.

Thats interesting cause I was looking into getting a cordless.
Don't exactly have a garage so plugging into an outlet for a wired isn't easy and getting an extension all the way back to my parking stop isn't the most practical and probably dangerous with people occasionally walking by..
Im looking for something probably under the $200 range. I won't be using it much. MAYBE once a month or so..

I have a craftsman impact for my air compressor and its pretty tuff could be stronger but compared to my old HF impact it way better.

But one thing that really pisses me off is that the craftsman has this little lock washer looking thing on the end where you put the socket. That little POS makes it so difficult to pull the socket off it makes me want to throw the thing across the garage. I guess its there to lock the socket on or something but it does way too good of a job that usually i have to get something to pry the socket off the gun. Other than that its ok.
