i would like full boost starting 3800 rpm or 4000 etc
I think

67 sorry!!!!!
Im in the same question , same specs like you, but a little more hig rpm too, i see a lot of dyno with GT30 and have soooo lag.
Check over there have a lots of setup and a lot of dynosheet

My freind was drifting for this new shop called DNA and he would always call me asking for my opinion on turbo cuz the shop car was super laggy.. It was a tunned s13 sr with GTX3071r i belive.. He complaint about the lag.. I belive GTX2871r puts out 500+HP right???
I have a GT2860RS. Instant spool i love it. I wonder what the GTX2860rs can do. Don't GTX put out about 60-80HP more than the first GT generation Turbo....? Check it out... Garrett should be number one choice for turbos.

GTX2871R will work good for your application. But in my experience if the car is tuned well on a dyno dynamics or some steady state tuning you can get the GT30 to get full boost even at 18 psi at around 3800 at the very latest even with single scroll. Done it several times. But just figure out if you'll ever need that much hp and go from there.

GTX2871R?,, I did not realize they made the GTX in 2871 size? I'm not being a dick, just asking. I have a GT2860R .64A/R with a slightly beaten up compressor wheel, and was thinking of upgrading to a 71mm compressor wheel. I would go a bit smaller but there is nothing between 71mm and 60mm that isn't $700 or more. FP 68mm comes to mind, but $700 for a compressor upgrade, I don't think so.

hx35 for the win. Super beast turbo

HX35 ftl.... That IS a big laggy turbo for people on a budget, no offense.
The people saying gt30's are laggy either haven't used them or maybe you say that as an excuse to make you feel better for not being able to afford one.
A gt3071 will spool AT LEAST as fast as a 2871 if not faster. It is the same compressor wheel with a easier breathing exhaust wheel and scroll. Think about it..
I use a Precision billet wheeled 5858 .63a/r which is closer to a gt35 sized wheel and it spools almost identical to the 56trim 2871 .72a/r that I used before. (2 liter sr)
Compressor size is not the only contributing factor. Exhaust scroll size can significantly change a turbo's personality.
With all that being said, if you want to max out around 400whp, go with a gt/gtx28xx.
If you want to go above that (450-500) then you need to be using a 30r framed turbo.

I used to think turbo selection was sooo important.
Then I realized: Its not the turbo, its the manifold.
With the right manifold you can swap turbochargers/exhaust housing in a pinch.
If I ever go for another [cheap+reliable] top mount setup again, I will get the right top mount manifold and play mix/match with the $500 T3 journal bearing series until I find a favorite.
it is different if you are actually building a race car. That could be a very expensive ball bearing turbo with plenty of research behind the selection. But a daily driver shooting for 400~whp on a random SR20DET engine... that is mix and match all day long for cheap, as there are literally hundreds of 400whp cheap T3 style turbochargers that fit the bill to choose from. Gota catch them all!

OP posted he wants to spool at 3800-4000, full boost on a hx35 is around 3500-3800 at 20 psi

:bs:
You mean to tell me it spools faster than a 2871??
Prove it.

spool is overrated. Peak power is overrated too.
Having fun is underrated. Try turbos until you are having the most fun.
With no spare tire, and no back seat, my little OEM T-25 S14 breaks the tires loose in first gear from a roll.:faint: with OEM exhaust.

I completely understand what your saying bud, but hop in a 480whp car that is completely gutted and it might change your mind.
Maybe it's just because I grew up on blown v8's but there is nothing like someone trying to size you up going 60mph down the highway and you drop to third and blow the tires off.
To each his own of course. I'm just stating a few facts to help the op out.
If you have the money then there is no reason to stay bottom mount imo. There is a whole different world out there when you make the change to a large frame turbo. But of course there is a special use for all, big and small.

Looks like about 4k but you have to remember that is an engine with almost a half liter more displacement. Doesn't sound like much but it definitely makes a big difference.
That car makes good power for 10psi.

If you have the money then
My post wasnt directed towards you, but you touched on the most important fact:
If you have money, then.... dot dot dot
If we have money, then why not ditch the 4-banger and go straight for the V-12 quad turbo? I am all for 2000BHP pump gas engines.
big issue here is cash flow, next is how it is spent. If $$ is unlimited then spending wisely is not important. If $$ is limiting factor, then spending wisely is. Thus, if I am poor, I will run a cheap top mount all day, cheap to rebuild, easy to change around, the setup is clean fun and most importantly affordable. likewise, for super poor college students, an OEM sr20det is a reliable cheap fun thing to own.

oh yes, I forget most people on here prefer the SR
due to it's being cheap, reliable, obtainable, easy to install in a random 240sx, etc... Not because its jdm or somehow better than other engines.
I am, however, beyond impressed with the 1990's redtop engines longevity AND performance. There are not many robust engines from the 90's that produce reliable 200rwhp and stand the test of time.

I bought my 240 for 1700$ and turboed it for 1500$, Im making 300hp very reliably. IDK, I guess its just preferance

^^this, also the new tomei kits are great for 3-400hp. they have 2 choices one for response and the other for power.
and there is no such thing as GTX2871, the GTX28 is offered with 60, 63 and 67mm compressors. they are able to support more hp beacuse of the billet compressor wheels and new blade design allowing for higher airflow and pressure ratios.
3071 does spool well beacuse of the balanced compressor and turbine sizes, but is a more expensive upgrade as you will need a new manifold downpipe and wastegate

How much pressure and cams?
check this, have 480 whp with a TD05 too.. dont need big turbo for big power only, is a merge.
Make and model: 1994 S14 sr20det in 1989 cefiro
Size of engine: 2.0l
Modifications to the car: Link Computer, trust cams, trust 740cc injectors, evo 5 turbo, intercooler, custom intake piping, 80mm throttle body, standard plenum modified dramatically to suit throttle body, custom steampipe exhaust manifold. Custom dump pipe, custom 3'' exhaust
Type of turbo: Mitsi Evo 5 Turbo. TD05HR 16G6 10.5T
When does vehicle begin boost: 3000RPM,

My car?
CA Custom Cams, custom heads, wiseco, K1 rod, GTK350 ( picture of above) straight pipes stainless and megasquirt, im wating for new crank and assembly with 28 or 30 psi.
After thise, i have a Evo VI with 450+hp, Stock cams, rods and piston forged, with a T04E with 28 psi, amazing car, but sooo laggy.
Same car with HKS272 and a T4 ( smaller than T04E) and 22 psi have almost the same power 440 hp with a muuuch better response.
Becouse that i say those.
