View Full Version : MT stuck in 4th, gear selector help

I took my car into tires plus for an alignment. Idiot kid somehow put the shifter way to the left, leaving the gear selectors. Somehow he knocked the striking rod into 4th, from below the nuetural position, and now it is stuck that way. The problem is, I cant move the rod with the shifter assembly removed to pop the 3rd/4th selector back into neutral.
after 6 hours of trying to force the striking rod to go around and above the 3 selectors, I found that its impossible. Dropping the tranny is a last resort at this point since the car is stranded.
I've noticed there are a few position sensors around the area of the gear selectors. Has anyone had any luck using a screw driver in one of the holes to realign the gear selectors?
Thanks!

You're going to have to drop the tranny and open up the case. There is no access to the individual shift rods. Really it should not be possible for what you're describing to happen. The trans most likely has some sort of linkage issue anyways.

one of the stabilizer pins that prevents the striking arm that holds the shifter steady had fallen out. You could move the shifter way to the left and go around the individual gear selectors. The problem is, 4th got knocked up, so its stuck in 4th. I can move the selector around, but cant pull 4th back down. I swear on the S13 trans there was a 4th gear position switch sensor (top position switch- 5th was OD). I thought the 3rd/4th rod was groved so it would activate the sensor when in 4th. I was thinking about somehow putting a screw driver in the groove and pushing the rod back.

I did some research and the 4th gear switch is the one that isn't there on the SOHC and S14 trannies. It's in the middle of the trans, towards the top of the case.

I just happen to have an S13 de trans on my S14...I'm seriously hoping this could work.

FYI guys, I removed that top position sensor, and somehow put a small enough screw driver in there. I dont know how it happened but it popped back into neutral.
That just saved me from dropping the trans.

Good for you, I was pretty skeptical myself!

Hey man thats awesome! glad to read this thread and know you fixed it.
That would certainly ruin my day if some kid did that.

Trust me, it should've been physically impossible for me to get 3rd/4th to realign with a toothpick sized screwdriver. I know how hard it is to press those rods into gear. Also, that bolt hole is the size of a dime, which just so happened I was lucky enough to have an S13 DE trans, and there is no way to grip a lubricated rod with no grooves to dig into. So consider myself lucky, and if anyone else has this issue, it is only fixable w/o a tranny drop with an S13 DE trans (3rd/4th gear).

The shop broke it, why did you even start fixing it yourself? Should of had it all taken care of by them...
