View Full Version : KA with no power off-idle...

I have a '91 S13 with stock KA-automatic drivetrain. Recently the engine is acting wierd. The engine accelerates somewhat slower than usual off idle, and the engine would lose power if I press the pedal any further. How badly? If I stop at a deep incline and I need to go up, the engine has no power and the car won't go up, even at WOT in 1st gear.

What could be the problem behind this? Fueling issues is what comes in mind. Anything else? Help me with this problem.

Well it's a ka do you want it to do a wheelie up the hill? Lol

But in all seriousness it can be a million things. We can't just tell you without a lot more details

Oh, I see what you did there. Seriously, I have no idea what else to say. It, can't be the air filter, 'cause it's a K&N. (It's dirty, but still.) I recently changed the fuel filter with one from a salvaged S13, because it had the same problem previously. Yes, the salvaged one was still in good shape, so it couldn't be clogged so quickly. Sometimes it would idle too high (between 1500-2000 rpm).

I don't know if these are enough details. Can this be something that can be diagnosed with the ECU? How do you do that.

Have you looked into transmission problems? It's entirely possible that your engine is running just fine and something in your transmission is slipping and/or failing...

Is the transmission slipping?

check error codes

The transmission is fine. If I didn't described the problem well in my first post, the car wouldn't accelerated on a hill, even on 1st gear. The transmission wouldn't slip, but the engine wouldn't get past 1500 rpm, even at WOT.

Maybe you have a problem with the butterfly valves in the intake mani, but I'm not sure it would cause THAT much of an issue. Pull the codes out of it, There are too many possibilities to narrow it down without more info...

Can anyone link me to how to extract codes? Having error issues in the search where I am now.

Also check fuel pressure, that's where I would start. Pull codes, check fuel pressure. As for the how-to try a google search...

Foes the engine EVER get passed 3500rpm? If no, it is probably a bad maf.

Did anything weird happen before this stuff started happening? Did you change anything on your car before it started acting up.

The engine will accelerate fine if it isn't under load, although it doesn't have the same throttle response (it has a tiny lag). I haven't done anything recently. It just started acting up.

O2 or knock sensor.

Does it misfire? Possibly ignition/timing related. Is the check engine light on? Pull the passenger kick panel to get to the ecu. Unbolt the ecu from the car and with the ign set to ON, turn the dial on the ecu (can't remember which way) then back to the original position. The cel light on the dash will flash, count the number of flashes. Slow flashes for the first number then quick ones for the second. Anyone chime in if I missed something, haven't done it in awhile. S14 is a lot easier cause I can just plug in my cheapo scanner.

Well, it's done. Codes 13 and 34 came out. I wondered why 13 came out, and it happenes that the plug to the coolant sensor was slightly loose. Engine now runs good. Don't know why the knock sensor code came out. Thanks for the help, guys.

Knock sensor code stays stored in there if it ever detected knock but won't show a cel. If it stays in there all the time and drivability worsens the sensor is bad.

The knock sensor is bad, the housings crack over time. Pretty much every 240 has a bad knock sensor.

KA, No power, I dont understand what is the problem? That is pretty normal...
