View Full Version : Another damn tire size thread...

Ok I started a thread a while back about these wheels (R33 GTR) and it kinda erupted into a tire size battle. In the end nothing was really reached though... I'm running TEIN HE, and want a 0-1 finger gap all around, but not tucked. Here are my choices for tire size (reasonable ones), Yokohama AVS ES100.
215/40ZR17
215/45ZR17
225/45ZR17
235/40ZR17
235/45ZR17
I can't decide between a 40 or a 45 sidewall, I'm afraid a 40 sidewall will look too ricey/rubber band tires style..., but I know that I definitley want 235's out back. Up front, will the 225/45's work? If so I would rather use those, I'm not hardcore enough to warrant such a stretch from the 215's. But if I do go with 215's, once again what sidewall do you guys reccommend?
Thanks,
John

i would recomend 45 gives your rim a lil more protection for the pot holes and ruff roads.Ive already found that out.And you know it doesnt look that bad youve seen my car before. But 40 isnt really all that bad, tires dont really look like rubber bands till you get to a 35 side wall.

Aspect ratio means nothing without a width. 215/40 is VERY stretched on a 17x9. 225/45 is a great fit, especially if you're leaving a finger's gap up front.

honda tire thicknesses on a x9 wheel..
greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat. :)
I say you fuckin make that shit as wide as possible and go for traction, fuck drift.

Well I don't drift, that's why I was asking.. But stretching allows me to drop it more. :)

Ok, what do you guys think about just 235/45 all around? Or 235/40. It would be nice to be able to rotate tires...
What do you think?

I think TehRonin got either 235/40 or 235/45 for his R33 wheels, I haven't seen them yet, but I'm sure it looks good.
I run 235/40s on a 9.5" wheel, and it's got a moderate stretch to it and the sidewall doesn't look like bad at all IMO.
I'll say 235/40s all the way around. :)

anything that stretches inward is ugly, imo. anything that flares outwards is ugly, imo. I think the perfect size tire for the wheel is the one that fits it like a block (square shaped).
unless of course, you're nutty about drifting and want absolutely NO tire flex.. which is pretty nutty but hey, everyone has a preference.

i would think less sidewall flex means more grip in turns... am i right? because if the sidewall rolls under a corner... you know

not necessarily
especially not on bumpy roads where some softness is needed in order to keep traction. thats why you make your car as stiff and skippy as possible when setting up a drift vehicle.

For instance, Sport Compact Car used 275s on 18x9/9.5 on their 350z and pulled over 1g in the skidpad. If you look at the pics, the tires bulge.
