Ok guys so I have finally gotten into a financial situation where I can actually start a build for my s13. I just moved to California from Arizona and have found out that this is going to be alot more difficult than I had actually imagined.

Goals for car is to have a 100% street legal s13 that will provide me enough power for the track (looking in the 300'shprange little higher or lower doesnt matter)

So first thing I thought of would be to turbo the original ka24de dohc I have currently. This would require a complete tear down of the motor and I cant seem to track down a carb legal turbo kit for the ka.

second option would be a vq35de swap. This would provide me with a enough hp but would still need (want :P) a turbo on it. My question on that would be, I know they make smog legal turbo kits for the 350z, if i were to swap the motor into my s13 could I still run that turbo even though its not in a 350z? This would also be a little more pricey than option one but I do get comercial discounts on parts so im not too worried.

After that I really dont have any other options. Im not gonna go sr but i am interested in other ideas. Remember I would like to keep it street legal and over 20mpg. Any thoughts/ comments?

LS3 E-Rod swap?
http://zilvia.net/f/builds-builds-only/385069-ls3-build-thread-s13-hatch-hate-v8.html

Little more pricey, but still legal and will get you the power you want, while still be N/A.

Have never seen or heard of a said kit. Links/info?

This. You want that AZ reg. If you have family out there (or possibly family friend/trustworthy friend) then keep your AZ reg. Cops won't pull you over, as often and you get away with more. Cheapest route too.

Stillen makes a legal Supercharger kit for them, but if I am not mistaken it is like $5300 bucks and THEN you would have the task of sourcing an engine and all of the necessary tricks to actually MOUNT it while maintaining all of the things that makes it legal in the first place.
So...
lose/lose
Try to keep your AZ registration

its already registered over here, plus az is adopting californias smog laws in 2013. Now I guess im gonna have to be riding dirty if I want to turbo the KA... So my next question would be," Is there any turbo kits that I can put on/pull off fast?" So when smog time comes I can just swap it with the oem stuff. Or if I get pulled over i can just do a quick switcharoo haha. (sidenot- i have axcess to a full shop including lifts) and then clear the fix it ticket?

If u have the patience and place to do. Its either go ka-t or sr. Its the easiest swap to do if want to pull a fast swap.

Im on my sr right now. Did my swap after a month passed my smog. Now i have a yr and a month with my sr till i pull it out and swap the ka to do my smog test again.

I know the rule for engine swaps is the engine has to be the same year as the car or newer. And you cant do truck engines into cars and vice versa I think. But everyone is right, LS or maybe possibly a 1 or 2JZ

Ls, vq COULD be legal but you better have lots of $$$$ to do t legal. Best best to to keep your Arizona registration. Do whatever you want to your car. Won't get pulled over (if you don't drive like a idiot) it's just a win win

Sooooooooooo much more to it though. Just look at the LS3 240sx from Modified and look at all the bullshit that thing had to go through even with a 'newer' engine and all the needed swap parts. But when pulled of I guess it pays off, just a bitch to do.

YOU MUST KNOW SOMEONE IN SMOG CAUSE SR WONT PASS SMOG IN ca

is there a way to turbo my KA and make the turbo system removable?

It can pass the sniffer (if stock and healthy) but not visual inspection. Around where a live I know a few places who could give a shit less about it if you give them a nice "tip."

Just keep the KA for when smog time comes around. That's what I originally planned to do for when I got an sr.

Figure out how to make a vh45de legal on a 240. Im waiting for someone to do it and show me its possible before i swap mine.

Ive done some research and the two main problems ive seen for this swap is that you need to keep the original auto trans (since the car its off of is only auto) and that you somehow need to modify the oem exhaust manifolds to fit (since you cant use aftermarket headers). Since i know you want manual, you can put a 300zx tranny and swap to auto just for smog.

alot of work :/ your looking at a new harness figuring out how to mount it ect...

ill probably just rebuild a ka24 and turbo it.

If you do everything yourself, you'll be saving lots of cash. But there are 3 companies that make the swap kit. Even if you buy it from them, it's still not that expensive.

Mounts+Driveshaft ~ $500
300zx trans to vh45 adapter plate ~$400
Wiring ~$200 (But i've read it's real easy.. like 7 wires)
A few other extras, but those are the main high money swap kit items. The motor itself is really cheap and easy to find (off q45s).

They also sell the headers for $650, but those aren't CA legal.

So the only thing you would need to figure out to make it CA legal is, like i said, how to modify the OEM headers to make them fit and how to make it work with an auto trans.

Well this is the info i've gathered so far, and i haven't heard of anyone passing CA inspection with this motor. But i would just like to get the word out to motivate someone to tackle this engine and make it a viable option for us Californians :)

Good luck with whatever you decide on.

V8 boo hoo, Go with a mustang/camaro if you want v8 =) . You can do a nissan swap from like a 300zx, 350z, 370z etc.

300hp street car is a pipe dream. Why do you need 300hp? Unless your building a track monster.

Yuppp, thats why my 2J is going into a project car so I can take my time with it. I know it will pay off in the end.

yeah, ive been here all my life and im pretty sure 300whp wont be achieved legally. ANY engine swap here is illegal, at least in my area. ive had friends with LS swaps, SR's and ka-t all got impounded..

just swap it to what you want, get a daily if possible and dont drive like an idiot when youre in your 240....

Woahhhhhh, not all engine swaps are illegal. You're friend with the SR I can understand because SRs are illegal. But the LS you have to keep everything, you can't modify anything for it to be legal. And the KA-T is gonna have a hard time passing smog because it's turbo.

OP, just go with a 2jz and you're good

@op

I dont need someone to pass smog if i put it everything back go stock all emissions intact. Just go thru to any smog station.

well even a 'legal' swap like the LS, you would have to take it down to the state ref to have it tested before its considered legal in your car.

Yup. And if the OEM manifolds don't fit your chassis, you're screwed.

California is simultaneously the best and the worst place to own a car. With that said I would say really your best bet is to try and re-register it back in AZ.
Friend of mine shipped his mustang up while we were in school
and we never got hassled with the Hawaii plates still
on it.

Cops generally won't fuck with a car if it has out-of-state plates. You'd have to be driving like a reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeal asshole to get fucked with (at least where I live).

Over 20mpg and assloads of power? Dude don't get me wrong I'm sure there's a magical way to do it but by the same token there are so many posts that start with "I want 389,787hp and good gas mileage." I think you should focus on just getting one (hp).

AZ is really going to adopt CA smog laws? FUCK.
CO is looking better and better every single day that passes.

Cops love fucking with cars with out-of-state plates. Why? Because you're required to register your car within 20 days of moving to CA. So, if he has a CA driver's license and AZ plates, he's fucked. Fees rack up pretty quickly. Oh, and you're required to get a CA driver's license within 10 days of entry or you get hit with additional fines.

The license part is true, but what cops here normally do is assume they're just visiting and tend to not waste their time. It's all a combination of luck/how you drive.

Swap all emissions, OBD2 and engine management equipment. It should pretty much look, act and be 100% OEM.
