I'm moving to Duarte, CA from Vancouver, BC this summer for at least two years. Would I be better off leaving my car in BC or is there anything I can do to bring it with me? Is the SR20 legal in Cali? What do I need to pass vehicle inspection and emission testing?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You can make it pass the sniffer part of the test but not visual or anything else.

You may just want to leave it registered in Canada until you move back.

You can drive your car here and leave it registered in Canada. You're not suppose to drive around with Canada if you are living in California but you can just do it anyway... just don't get caught multiple times by the same cop or come up with some kind of an excuse like oh I come here every other month to visit family or something.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but this is how it works with cars that come from out of state to CA. It might be the same way with cars from Canada, i'm unsure. I have a friend from virginia who leaves his car out here in CA for the past few years with Virginia plates.

So in Cali is allowed to drive a 240sx with an LSx swap but illegal with sr20?

you sure are correct, lots of people from out of state are here for many different reasons 1 main being the army.
so just drive the car down here keep it registered down here and basically you visit family here every month

SR20 was never offered state side that is why it is illegal no matter what. Your best bet would be to leave it and get something down here but if you have the proper connections you can have it down here, it just won't be legal. CA is the worst state when it comes to modified cars =/

You can drive in California with out of state plates whenever you want without issue, as long as you don't drive like a punk.

Out of COUNTRY plates, I am not sure.

I'm registered in WA and have been for the last 2+ years I've been in San Diego. I open my dumped wastegate next to cops, they don't do anything, and they can't do anything about my SR20 because of the plates, and the lack of rules in my county of WA.

OP, got friends in WA? Use their address to register it in Kitsap county or another county that doesn't have emission testing and you will be good to go for your stay in CA.

LSx is legal since they are legally sold engines in the US. As long as the engine is stock and you can keep all the stock emission items in, engine is newer than the chassis going into...its possible to get it smog legal in CA.

You're in SD, with the amount of military presence in the area, they probably dont single out your car with out of state plates since they assume you're military. You try to pull crap like that in areas that doesnt have a whole lot of military, you're liable to get fucked with.

why cant you just claim the motor is from a fwd maxima or what ever it came it. and say your running a ka24de transmission with a adaptor plate or some bull shit lol?

Because some cops aren't THAT stupid or ignorant.

If they hate the shit out of you, they can impound your car and/or a ref ticket and with the lies you told, that could be used against you if you were to ever take it into court.

It's best not to say anything unless asked. And if you've got to lie, be smarter about it. And don't be like this guy with a FWD SR with a KA tranny. :duh:

FWD Sentra SR20 came in a completely different configuration and they were all NA. Its not the cops you have to convince, its the smog referees. Its damn near impossible to bullshit guys who's job is to know what is legal and illegal. You really think they dont know what an SR20DET is at this point?

fuck cali for modded cars. your going to get fucked with. cops profile the fuck out of 240s. 90% of the time when you pass a cop they would already be looking at you, instantly stop where they are going, and follow you..no matter what your doing. and like stated above cops are getting smarter about what engine is which. even if they don't pop your hood you can get ticketed for a whoooole lot of other shit assuming you have other mods ( headlight hight, exhaust, etc)

yeah if i move to cali, ill keep my car registered back in oregon, but honestly with the way people drive in l.a, F having something nice lol

If you bring it don't register it. If you get a license from here don't show the cop that I.D.if you ever get pulled over. Don't drive like an ass. Have a good security system cause it could/would get stolen. Duarte is an alright city but not crime free. Idk if it's RHD but if it is...well with plates and license from Canada you should get away so long as it's not the same cop pulling you over multiple times...Good Luck

IIRC, when you're registering an out of state car in CA, it has to be inspected by the DMV? Not smog or anything crazy like that, just a quick inspection to make sure the vins match, tints, basically safety stuff.

You all must drive like fucking ricer ass honda kids. Btw, ive had nothing but swapped motors and turbo ka in all of my daiky driven 240s, with isis straight pipes.

DRIVE NORMAL IN CALI AND YOULL BE FINE. T

You must just be commuting from point A to point B.
Everyone getting pulled over "out of the blue" is driving the wrong car, at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

This is true, I had a corvette shipped from Maryland to here and had to do a simple inspection at the DMV.

DMV doesnt care about engine or mods, they just have someone look at the vins and turn signals/horn to make sure it is road worthy.

Just don't register it here yet, ride out whatever registration you have. If you ever get pulled over, say "Sorry officer, Im still learning here, just been busy with work" . blah blah.

Yeah california does suck with laws, yet we have the biggest aftermarket and car scene (all the companies are out here), go figure. We just need to find a way to get rid of the visual smog inspection (can always get modded cars to pass regardless of what parts /it looks like)>

Here in Az we have "snowbirds" that come from all over including Canada. They stay here for more than half the year. They all stay registered where they are from without any issue. I would just keep it registered In Canada. If you ever get questioned about it just say you have a vaction home here and your primary residence is in Canada.

Damn guys. Do a little research on grey market vehicles. If that car was originally sold in canada, has the leaf stickers all over it ( OP you know what I am talking about if your from canada) then no problem. Smog is different for gray market vehicles. You can register a skyline r34 in california if it was orginally sold in canada. The grey market is different. I worked on a california registered right hand drive 180sx from Japan a couple years ago. It had the original ca18 turbo in it.

It is going to matter how your car is configured by emission standards. You may be required to add some parts to make it legal. Your first inspection would be with the ref to determine what you need. DMV should give you a temp operating permit until you get that handled. Also explain to them this is only a temporary assignment and not permanent residency. Even though your not military they may extend the same privilage to you as far as emission requirments due to your temporary status. Just dont tell them you might be staying up front.

I currently have Idaho plates have had them for 3 months. Never had an issue.

Had a sr20 with Washington plates. Once again never had an issue. And was pulled over for speeding.

I live in sacramento and commute ehh 25 miles aday and go right across from the CHP training facility an have never had an issue.

If you get pulled over just don't be a dick. Most cops are cool. I work with a lot of local law enforcement officers and thy give me shit for out of state plates and a ca ID. But I make it work.

So out of state plates don't matter. But your sr20 is illegal. Get an illegal smog and you'll be "legal"

I live in this area. A few days ago I was driving back home from the store and the Sheriff on the the oncoming lane slowed down and thoroughly scanned the front end of my car as if looking for an intercooler.

Everytime I get pulled over they pop my hood. I don't drive like a ricer. What attracts them is the fact I don't have a front license plate. I need to get on that and buy the adapters.
