View Full Version : Brake pedal slowely goes to the floor?

For the past week i have been gathering parts to upgrade my brakes on my s14. I got new rear calipers (because my passenger rear was leaking), new lines, new pads, new rotors, and an AP racing front bbk. Now yesterday I installed everything and I bleed the system for over and hour. Did the driver rear first then passenger rear, then passenger front then driver front. And also used new fluid.

Now here is what worries me, the brakes work "alright" pedal is a little soft (but I kinda knew that going into it because i was pushing more pistons), but what i did not expect is that when I'm at a red light when i press the brakes to stop, I come to a stop but the pedal will slowly go to the floor then if I let off in the least bit I will start to roll.

Does this sound like there might be air in the system? Or are my seals going bad in my master cylinder, maybe all the bleeding "pushed it over the edge" and killed it? I will be pressure bleeding the brakes this coming weekend again and I will see what happens.

As always,
Thanks Zilvia

Regardless of the change in brake calipers I would still expect your pedal to stop once full pressure is applied to the system. You may experience a different pedal feel like having to push harder to get the same amount of stopping force or something but "slowly going to the floor" is indicative of other problems like a brake line leak or air in the lines.

When you say that you will be pressure bleeding the brakes this weekend, does that mean that you were using a different method previously? ie, vacuum bleeding, gravity bleeding, using speed bleeders...? I have always done pressure bleeding and it has worked fine for me.

Kinda sounds like a slow leak. Probably not the master cylinder if you weren't having trouble with it before all the work. Did you check all the connections yet?

I guess it just takes a new day to look over your work again. It was leaking at the top fitting really bad. I took it off and re-tightened, I will see if it continues to leak, but the pedal is hard now and does not sink to the floor when I'm at a stop. I drove 40 miles with it leaking like that  Can i use plumbers tape on that fitting? I have the right fitting tool but i can only tighten it so much before I feel it start to round off (which I do not want). Or should I be ordering a new line?

Thanks Guys

It's stripping with a flare nut wrench? If it isn't leaking anymore I would say don't try to overtighten it. There's no need to use teflon tape on the threads as the flare is what makes the seal.

Yes it was starting to strip with a tubing wrench (I couldn't think of the name of it earlier) I guess just the 17 years that it hasn't been touched has something to do with it. It's the shortest line so I will be ordering a new one tomorrow.

Dont forget to rebleed it. Probably got some air in there from that leak.
