This is probably a stupid question but i just started driving and i'm trying to figure out how to shift from 1 -> D . I was wondering like what rpm's you shift at and so on and if this makes any difference or should i just stick with D.
thanks

Ha! Shifting an automatic is the quickest way to a finding yourself without a transmission!

i'll 2nd what s14pilot said. Just use D or if you at a drag strip I hear its good to put it in 3rd cauz you won't go anyfaster than 3rd will let you go.

they're not made to shift from 1, 2, d, whatever u know. seriously, it will mess up ur tranny. not even safe to do it at all, especially at higher speeds.

and it isnt' going to help you any either. If anything it will slow you down.

Well, like everyone said it's not good for you tranny.... but just racing isn't good so who cares Doe's your auto (when it's on D) go all the way to redline? If it doe's then there really is no need to shift. If it does'nt go up to redline then shift for it, you will get better times (in most cars). In a auto though the best thing to do is power brake (again not nice to the tranny, but what is? Can't drive like a granny all the time) Power brake by holding the brake at launch and then apply the gas til it feels like it's about to break loose then floor it and let go of the brake.

auto tranny's are there for a reason, you shouldnt do it unless you have an auto trans specifically made to let you shift it (new honda preludes, is300 semi-auto etc etc). power braking is the way to get a good launch, yes, and you can always do the third gear thing, and overdrive to let it rev higher on most auto tranny's.

i dunno, i just always thought it was common sense to never change the gear on an automatic transmission yourself while the car is moving. i do remember when i was little my mother had a tendency of putting the car from resverse to drive before letting the car come to a complete stop, and when it finally fell to pieces one day on vacation, the new trans they put it had a feature to stop you from changing the gears unless you were at a complete stop, with the brake down

Of course it's not good to shift, thats not the point, some times u sacrifice alittle reliabilty to go faster. I had taken my old car to the track to get the fastest method of running it, and shifting for it was the fastest, in that car. Only way this guy will figure it out is if he goe's to a track and test's different method's. Also (not ragging on ya, just thought i would point it out mistert) there is no such thing as a new prelude, they stopped making them.

i know that, 5g is the newest prelude though and the prelude i liked the most was 4g, so i will continue to refer to the 5g as the "new prelude"

might have meant the latest revision... Anyway, I just don't see the point of shifting an auto, I mean... most of the time you can get an automatic transmission to redline, just have to hit the gas pedal to the floor.

i could understand if u wanted to do it like once in a while at the track, but i would never do that in daily driving. i've seen someone accidentally put it into p from d really quick before the car came to a complete stop n it didn't sound 2 good. they're meant to go into gear from a stopping position.

Thats what I was saying guys. Don't drive like that normally, only if you line up against a car that your gonna race. Plus like I said before, he needs to goto a track and see if it's the fastest method for his car. For my old car, shifting was the fastest, his car maybe different. ICER, do not drive every where shifting
