Ok first and foremost!!! I searched and googled this for awhile with no results. All I found was a lot of flaming and some articles that don't say what harness they used. So here my question. I've done 2 auto to M/T swaps and both don't get speedo readings. And on both I used the M/T lower harness. Should I have used the auto trans harness or can I get the M/T one to work. I follow the speed sensor wires the yellow/ black and yellow / green wire and it connects to the body harness. So only other thing I can think of is theyre not plugging in like they need to.

When i did my friends, we just use what came with the tranny.

YOU NEVER CHANGE LOWER HARNESSES. there is no need to. use the auto lower harness..the original one that came with the car. and use the M/T speed sensor. it plugs in. if it doesnt read then the speed sensor/ tranny / lower harness isnt your issue. ive done multiple auto>manual swaps, all speedos have worked as long as you use the correct speed sensor...they are tranny specific. so auto>manual s13 use auto lower harness and 5 speed speed sensor.

You don't really need a manual trans. lower harness. Just make certain you have your Speed Sensor hooked up and your reverse lights hooked up. Connections which are available via the lower harness from an auto trans.
There are 4-5 really well done write ups on this subject so it doesn't seem like you've searched on the subject all that much.

Crap I thought it would be better to use the manual harness so I threw away both auto harnesses. •_____• I know there not the speed sensors them self cuz it worked fine before swapping the motor and trans from my other shell. Well now time to find auto harness....

And dreamn I googled it, and I did find lots of write ups. but they never mention what harness to use.

I'm just finishing a S13 swap with the manual harness and the car drives fine. *I think* the only thing not working is the reverse light and the speedo. For those, I was planning to use the wiring diagram and splice in directly behind the connector at the fuse box relay in the engine bay. Currently, I have 3 of the 4 manual harness connectors attached to the fuse relay connectors. One of the tutorials even talks about cannibalizing the auto harness for the "car thinks its in park" trick, so I thought that was additional proof that the manual harness needed to be used.
I have done a ton of research in those tutorials, and none of them say "do not use the manual harness" , so I did use the harness.
What about all the sensors on the tranny? ie-5th position, 4th position, neutral position. dont you need these?
The electrical section of these tutorials has no info on this, other than a description of how to trick the car into thinking its into park, and hooking up the reverse lights.
If there is a more complete tutorial, let me know, but I think i've read ALL of them. The only one that has a really comprehensive electrical breakdown is an s14 swap on nicoclub, but I own an s13, so i don't think it applies.

Not bad. Pictures would be helpful (easier to understand a pic), but it talks about the speedo connection and not needing the 4th and 5th sensors. This helps!
Question: Is the connector for the manual harness wired the same as the auto harness that goes to the middle 8 pin grey connector(inhibitor switch) at the fuse relay? It seems that the wires are different colours on the auto and manual connector. I suppose the car runs, so it must be at least similar in some ways.

Ok follow up on my problem. I got an automatic harness in the junk yard. I was kinda iffy bout installing it cuz it had none of the grey plugs or brown plugs next to the fuse box. But after looking at both harnesses the brown plug was never connected anyway and the only grey plug ( inhibitor switch ) was all the trans switches witch the car isn't able to read any ways. So I just swaped harnesses. And everything works fine. Except the reverse lights but I don't care about that. Just needed my speedo to work. And know it does. For the people who helped me thanks.
