I need guidance because no one in my area drifts they are into hondas or just drag racing. i want to know if a limited slip differential is essential for drifting. I have been trying, using the side brake i tried shift locking and feint techiniques but i cant seem to drift. i think i am not going fast enough but i dont know. sometimes the car slides but when i press the gas the car gets traction right away. i need help please tell me steering techniques or anything to help me drift. how should i enter a drift and at what speed is a good speed for beginners. Your information is greatly appreciated thank you.

lsd is ESSENTIAL to "drifting." but u should try going decently slow in some open area when the pavement is wet, that's always a good way to learn how to control your car.

LoL.... this is why for now i'm just "drifting". With an open diff there's no way you can carry the car around a corner sideways smoothly (unless you're takumi ) since only one tire will be powering over and the other will just be dragging.... the best you can hope for is to let your initial turn in carry the "drift" through the turn. If it wasn't for all my little projects I'd have an LSD by now >_<

yeah, not having LSD is a bitch. Can't take a corner hard without lighting up the inside tire, it sucks. I am still used to my stang, gun it in the corner and the read comes around real nice. Oh well, in a few months I will have to get an LSD, and more power....to bad i am broke right now. =(

Aceinhole what brake techniques do you do. do you use your side brake a lot what other stuff can i do to just drift.

yeah... i'm worried about pushing a little over 200hp with an open diff, but what can ya do.

as for students question, I rarely use my side brake.... most of the time I just head in, down shift, and engine brake to initiate the drift, then get hard on the throttle and hope both tires spins as much as they can before 1 slows down and drags itself.
Lately I've been driving a lot of dirt roads and trying to mow through grip lines as hard as I can.... the natural over steer of being on the throttle through the turn initiates the slide and I just keep it pointed to whatever angle the turn will come out at...... untill I get an LSD, I don't necessarily call what I do drifting....
there are, however, a few turns on my route on the up hill side where the car will just power itself over into the turn.... in which case i'm accelerating through the slide as much as I can.

To really drift... get an LSD and practice your basic control of the car. Once you get the basic understanding of how the car reacts to throttle movements and braking through turns, you get quicker at moving from brakes to gas to clutch to any combo (not excluding all of the above... like heel toe downshifts). Often times I find myself sliding the car through with all 4 wheels locked, bringing the car back to pitch with the throttle and wheel, and doing it fairly smoothly, accelerating through the rest of the turn while bringing it straight out of the turn. Hard to explain it all with words I guess.
There are just so many factors and movements involved in a drift... and it's not always the same every time, even through the same corners. You're constantly adjusting the car, while maintaining the slide. To me, it's sort of pointless without an LSD, because those adjustments don't help as much or just upset the car most of the time..... and the slide can't be continued through the apex of the turn really..... whenever my car is sliding through, even if i bring it out, and even when somehow I get the rear end to hook up and get power to both rears.... I just can't bring myself to call it drifting.
Untill then, all I'm learning is how to react quicker through it all.....

Thanks for educating me aceinhole now i can practice my braking with more knowledge.

LoL... but i didn't really say anything???
Anyways, by downshifting and engine braking, you're slowing down the rear tires. Assuming your pitching into the corner hard enough (like swaying the car into the turn) engine braking will swing the rear out and you should already be ready to get on the throttle nice and smoothly......
I used my lack of ABS to continue slides that were pitching the car too early, in combination with some switching from throttle to brake to throttle movements.

Seriously though, this is just stuff I do, and stuff I've learned..... I really don't know if you can apply it to actual drifting (although for the most part you can, knowing how the car is reacting to certain movements) since I'm using an open diff for now.....
I guess what I'm trying to say is, experiment with it, drive it, learn it.... and at the least you'll get a better understanding of how to control your car the way you WANT to, instead of letting the car control you.

i think an lsd will be a good first upgrade for my car then.

it wouldn't hurt... i'm sort of kicking myself in the pants about not getting one.... I decided to go through with my suspension and turbo projects first. Now I have myself calling it "stage 1", being replacement and braces for all suspension components: swaybars, strut tower bars, struts/shocks, springs, wheels and tires, and finishing up my 5 psi intercooled turbocharger project. All I need now is the manifold (head flange is being made by Hotshot and I should get it in January) and piping (ordering it from mcmaster-carr.com, they ship so quick it comes in the next day, so i'm not worried about that). and for suspension all I need is shocks, swaybars, and the rear STB. add an LSD and I would have 1 mad drift car
