Cali resident..... *sigh*
Bought my first 240sx for a cheap price, only issue is that it wasn't smogged so now I'm trying to smog it. The guy identified previous issues of the motor such as smoking on startup and a check engine light (i think it's a pison ring) and said he wasn't gonna deal with smog. So i decided to try and smog it because since owning it, it hasn't smoked or had a check engine light.
I want a quick fix since it is only 10 over the limit, I plan to replace the piston rings when i go to do an engine rebuild. 44100

Just for your information, the seller is the one that is responsible for smog. So...you got fucked imo.
Anyway, check things like your cat, injectors, spark plug/wires. But in my opinion, one of the reasons why it's high is because of your fucked up piston rings.

Yeah i know he's responsible and all that, but the deal was so good that all the work that goes into the car would be worth it. And yeah, like i said the pison rings will be replaced eventually, I just need a quick fix to get that hydrocarbon reading down by just ten. I was debating trying some denatured alcohol, or replacing the plugs and wires.

Good deal or not, if you plan on registering the car, it's a dumb move to have to go through the process of fixing the car for smog when it isn't your responsibility.
And if it were me, I seriously think that your problem lies with that bad ring. Assuming you've checked the things that I said earlier.

I had the same high hydrocarbons on my car too I was told it had to do with the oil.. I suggest doing an oil change and spark plugs and wires and even putting the lower octane gas could help. You have a free retry right? Or you could pay 20 bucks for test only if you'd like

to be completely honest, I wasn't planning on going to a legit smog center, but my contact for the other kind of smog center is kind of MIA. But as far as the piston ring goes, i planned to do an engine rebuild regardless of the car because I eventually want to put a turbo on the KA.

Then why ask...? You already seem to know the answer yet you keep on posting.
Illegal smogs isn't something discussed on Zilvia. So unless you want to do it right then this will get locked up.

Well like I said I plan on legitimately and legally passing smog. Just looking for some pointers. But yes i'm just 10 over the limit on the hydrocarbon readings, I know that eventually I'm going to have to replace the piston ring, but should I try replacing 02 sensors or something to lower the readings for now?

hahaha, and the bashing begins. welcome to zilvia man.
try using the search button or hell, just google shit.
That way we dont have useless threads like these and you wont be getting bashed on.
and yeah go ahead and replace the 02, thats the main component for reading exhaust fuels.

yeah i've done both, found a bit of info on the stuff but wanted to see what people think I could do for my particular situation. Thanks for the tips though.

Oil change + an additive that helps sealing damaged rings (i.e.Restore's Engine Restorer). Maybe even an engine flush, but actually take off the oil pan to clean that off properly.
Low O2 numbers aren't good either since you don't have proper air/fuel mixture to properly burn fuel. Check timing, change distributor cap & ignition rotor, and check if you have any vacuum leaks.

Thanks for the reply, I decided I'm just going to take it to a diagnostic shop and have them look it over since I'm kind of a noob to cars and 240's.
