View Full Version : S14 Turbos...BB or Journal??

Lets talk T28's. I know this has been beaten to death a million times. But now I'm totally confused. Back then I had a T28 that was as small in size as a T25, it even had a T25 styled wastegate actuator. With a straight rod opposed to the curved ones on most if not all other T28's I've seen. It spooled super fast and it was a 69F00.

Now with my new S13 SR I just picked up, it came with a 69F00 as well and this one is big like all other T28's I've seen. Everywhere I've read says the 69F00 is ball bearing, but when I spin the compressor wheel it probably spins around one revolution and stops, making me believe it's a journal bearing.

So what I'm wondering is how did I have two turbos that were both 69F00 and one was I'm pretty sure BB, and the one now journal?

I also read that S15's came with smaller turbos that spooled faster, which is what I'm believing is what I had back then.

S14 turbos are journal bearings. Only ball bearing turbos are the S15 Spec R manual. S15 Spec R autos got the S14 turbos.

I might be mistaken but aren't 69f00 dbb.

I had an S14 BB turbo, however it was a manual trans motor. Cross referenced it with garret P/N's and it confirmed it. I'll see if I still have pictures of it laying around somewhere...

My part number was this #466541-7001, which shows above that it was indeed a BB turbo. Motor came as a complete swap, was never converted and/or tampered with.

from what I understand t28 offs Silvia S14 are all BB. T28 off Pulsar (N14?) SR20DET (FWD) are Journal bearing. S15 Spec R manual came with S15 Dual BB and the auto SR20DET from S15s came with S14 Single Ball Bearing T28s

This is completely wrong.

The only journal bearing s14 turbos are the Aussie ones. Probably to go with their down-tuned engines

So I'm guessing the 69F00 I have now is a bb then i guess....

But how the hell did I have two 69F00's that were different sized. My old one was the size of a T25..

What does your plate say on the CHRA? Should be stamped with a number like I posted above.

these turbos are confusing. i bought a s15 auto t28 which is supposed to be a journal bearing turbo so i installed it with a journal bearing restrictor. the turbo blew within a few months beacuse it turned out to be dbb. 2 shops had already confirmed that it was a journal bearing turbo and they were wrong. at the end of the day i still dont know what the hell is supposed to be journal or dbb. its all a lie lol

The numbers mean nothing sometimes haha :P

Just look inside the oil drain at the chra, journal or ball bearing is obvious at that point.

Since the date of purchase i was also under the impression that my JDM S14 blacktop came with a garret DBB! Pictures to follow this weekend!

From my encounters, I've seen only some of the Aussies S14s
Came with journal bearings turbos.
And like
Mentioned before the AWD RNN14 Pulsar GTi-R came with a journal t28

From what I know....all S14 t28's are journal. Spec R T28's are the only dual BB. S15 auto turbos are the same as s14 T28's. My buddy has an S15 auto turbo and his max boost is lower then the S15 Spec R turbo. Had he had a Spec R turbo he coulda made more power....well over 300whp.

Jlawdet- read my post up above... It was a BB turbo so "what you know" is obviously wrong. Facts speak for themselves...

You are right in that s15 spec R t28's are the only dual ball bearing turbos, but the s14 t28's are still single ball bearing.

God I love their turbos. I'll be going M7960 soon. Sucks that they are journal bearing but I can get over that.

This is correct. Auto S15 = Single ball bearing turbo (aka s14 turbo).

Found out mine is indeed the BB one, but I don't get how I had one back then that was T25 sized??
