View Full Version : hyperwhite blinkers and sidemarkers

those two orange lights look weird with the hyperwhite headlights, fog lights, and parking lights, just wondering if you would get mad tickets for that, cuz I live in an area that cops have nothing to do but give tickets.

I dono about tickets, but that would look pretty cool IMO. I've never heard of anybody doing that. just don't aim them up (if you can even aim those) cauz that really pisses me off when people aim foglights up.

the sidemarkers (at least on the S14 which I'm assuming you have) are wedge bulbs like the corner lights (your parking lights i assume). I'm getting some bright LED wedge bulbs for my dash so I'll see how bright they are in the sidemarkers really quick when I pick them up on wednesday.

LoL... right now i have yellow/orangeish lights in my corner lamps fuggin cool

Legal? No. Chance of getting a ticket? Very slim.

there's a shop I know that has them for $10 a pair.... I'm gonna see if he'll go lower than that though. Apparently they're japanese (from the looks of the package).

Dont bother, the LEDs that most companies attempt to sell are not adequate to be retrofitted into a stock assembly. LEDs must be carefully installed in order to compare in lumens output with a halogen bulb. Besides, quality LEDs cost much more than 10/pair.. you're be looking more at prices like 150/pair. The LEDs I use for our sidemarkers are 1mm small and mounted on custom circuit boards. I usually install them int he clear sidemakrers when they are all apart.

Besides, halogen's dispersion (wide viewing angle) is superior to LEDs right now. But if you spend the right kind of money, LEDs will perform well too.

baah... I'm only getting them because supposedly they're brighter than the stock 194 lights in the dash.... i'm afraid halogen bulbs might damage something in there. i guess only time will tell.

also, the other nifty thing about the LED wedge bulbs (at least the ones I have) is the colored ones are clear when not lit. I have a couple yellow ones in my corner lamps and they light decently, and the color is rich.

I work part time at Pep Boys, and I buy their stuff to test, and they are mostly APC stuff, I suggest no body get those, they suck. Blue 194 comes out looking like green, hyperwhite 1156 comes out like the stock yellowish ones (there was seriously no difference at all), but their headlights are pretty cool, unless you need H1's, because they don't have that in stock in most stores. I ordered 168/194 hyperwhites from the net, and I should get them next week, I will let you guys know.

12-25-2001, 11:54 PM
Beware, just about anything sold at Pep Boys is absolute garbage. Unless you buy Bosche, K&N, NGK.. you know, brand-name stuff thats actually reputable. Other than that, you WONT catch me using Pep Boys stuff like Raybestos and other crap. There is a very thin line between quality and garbage.. lots of US products are garbage for our cars, so be careful.

As for APC, they are just a fraudulent company, IMO. They sell projector headlights that use H3 bulbs - H3 bulbs are designed for FOGLIGHTS. So, its obvious their "engineers" so to speak, are more concerned with looks than performance. To add to that, they think they can sell low-quality LEDs to supercede high-quality halogen bulbs which have been standardized for years now.

Halogen rocks in many ways. Sure, its inexpensive and a bit boring.. but its very useful.. and has been useful for years. High intensity LEDs, XENON, all of this stuff is nice.. but you have to be careful where you use it. Its all very specific..

hey mike is right, lots of pep coys stuff is shit, esp the APC crap. The LED wedge bulbs on the market right now suck, none of them are acutally any brighter than the standard bulbs, and the APC ones are the worst, they are abnormal sized (too long). and the light output is only bright from a certain angle.

People always think an "upgrade" is as simple as replacing 1 thing with something better, thats not the case. Upgrade require research.. development, testing, etc.. and thats why I hate companies that have show-cars that are all show, but they cant handle the heat.

LEDs are not designed to be dropped in, let alone be used in every application. You can use large LED clusters for tail lights and maybe signals (sometimes). But sidemarkers are different, they are designed to be seen from wide viewing angles. So its important you use special 1mm wide-viewing high-intensity LEDs (similar, but not exactly like cell phone LEDs). You'de have to mount a LOT of these LEDs to get even a remotely similar light output to a 50 cent halogen wedge bulb. Is it worth it? Not for a sidemarker.. LEDs alone will cost over $50 for sure. Labor? ha...
