Anyone have any experience, comments, or suggestions on helmets?? I'm planning on AutoXing next season and there's a few events in January, and I'll need a helmet. Also, besides a motorcycle shop, where can I get a good racing helmet??

I just bought a helmet for autox last year so i can help you out. I got a Bell M2 (for people that wear glasses) from OG Racing for $300 (i got a free helmet bag with it). I know you can get a helmet for a lot cheaper that isn't quite as high of quality, but ask yourself this question; how much is your head worth to you? I'd give you more information about where to get it, but it's all at school. OG Racing is a porsche racing team, i've bought multiple items from them and have always received great service, and prompt shipping. If you have any other questions let me know and i'll be glad to help Ace.

LoL... apparently my head is worth about $124... it's still Snell 95/DOT approved so it still has to do its job right? Anyways, you're talking to a hockey player that doesn't even use a half shield, let alone the recommended full cage
Still, I'll probably end up getting a better helmet later, but on top of all the projects I've been putting off, all I can afford is one for around $150 for the two events in Jan and Feb.... then later maybe I'll get a better one.

I'm guessing the helmet has to be full face, right? Does anyone know of any sight issues with any helmets?

the one i got was a SA2000 (brand new) approved helmet, if your's is SA95, it's probably used, hence the price discount, i know Bell and Simpson make good helmets, i would expect Arei (spelling) to since they make motorcycle helmets, and OMP should be quality too, and no it shouldn't have to be full face, i just got one so i can get rides in my friends open cockpit cars

so if it's SA95 it's used? I'm looking online at a few helmet shops, i don't think it's used. What approval rating should I be looking for then??

The SA95 or SA2000 rating is basically like a model year for a car. For a SA95, the helmet new would have been approved to 1995 guidelines. So either it's used, or they've just had it sittin around since 95. In which case it would be a great deal considering clubs will let you use a helmet for i think 10 years. So a SA95 would be good until 2005. I'm no helmet expert though, this is just my understanding of the subject.

If you got an SA95, you should be fine for the next few years. Current rules allow use of SA95 or SA2000 for all auto events (SCCA, NASA, Speedtrial, etc.). The rules will change in about 1.5 years and then only allow SA2000 and what will soon be SA2005 (the standard is upgraded every 5 years and you can use them for 10 - just like tnord said). I'd also wager that it is not used, as many places still have 95s and often at very attractive prices. The other thing to look out for are M rated helmets. Some councils take them, some don't, so I wouldn't buy one even though they are cheap. (sadly, my local autox board allowed them, so I threw money away on one and will be buying a new one soon for track events ). Also, I would stick with a full face - especially if your car has airbags. You will also find the best prices online.

*edit - BTW: no need to pay more than $250 for a decent SA00 full face if you look around (Bell, Simpson)*

Get an SA2000 or you will have to buy another helmet after like 4 years. Spend the money now or you will have to again later. I got an SA2000 for like $230 brand new, racerwholesale.com I think, just search for racer wholsale.

also if you really care for safety dont get a motorcycle helmet. theyre designed to take one single hard blow. sedan helmets can take multiple ones.

That's not really true. If you have seen/been in a bike crash, you know there are repeated impacts. I think this bit started b/c when you are in a bike wreck and "use" the helmet, you throw it away... in a car crash, the helmet usually doesn't absorb a big impact (b/c of the car shell) and it is re-usable. Generally the shell material is the same, but an SA helmet will have a Nomex flame resistant lining.

The other issue is fit. I actually think I may wind up buying local b/c my last helmet's fit left a bit to be desired. Get one that feels just barely too tight... in the end, it will be perfect.

Yeah, I heard the same thing initially. But, when you think about it, the lining is a huge difference for a car... it's hard to get trapped in a fire on a bike - no so in a car.
