s14, running rich and rough

I just bought this car and it has a kade with stock exhaust manifold but Megan test pipe and buddy club to finish off. My problem is it back fires and smells rich and has hesitation at over 1000 rpm but smoothes out after a sec or two on the throttle. what could be the issue?

The mass air flow sensor is most commonly associated with rough/rich concerns. You mentioned it has a testpipe and exhaust. When the catalytic converter, resonator, and oversize muffler are removed it causes backfire upon deceleration and sometimes when shifting. Also check the ignition system (plugs wires distributor cap and rotor button.) The throttle position sensor can also cause hesitation during tip in hope this helps

Didn't think of that one! Also when I start The car without throttle it dies unless I give it gas then it's ok, would that be the mass air flow. What should I do to see?
