so my dash VIN # plate is all mangled and ripped apart (dunno for what reason before i owned the car), but the door jam plate and engine bay plate match up...also carfaxed before i purchased the car and it had a very clean record....havent found the "secret" VIN # on the car that people say though...
but how do i go about getting a replacement dash VIN #?
would'nt it sound kind of suspicous asking for one?

yea..I'm lost...what do you mean "secret vin" ?
All the ones I know about are on the dash, engine bay, chassis (engine bay location), door jamb and trunklid.
The only place you can try to get a new one is the dealership.....expect to pay $$$$

You might consider contacting your local Nissan dealer. I'm sure they handle things like that.
Or, find a respected body shop and ask for recommendations. I'm sure they've had to replace ones out of damaged vehicles before.
I ned a new Vin plate too, cause when i swap my whole interior out for black, mine used to be blue interior, i accidently threw away my dash along with my original vin.
I went to the dealer and the guy had no clue on what to do, so he said he'll call Nissan up and see what he could do and call me back. which he never did. But go ahead and check with the dealer and Nissan, im sure they can get you a new one with proper registration.

the "secret" VIN i've always heard is the one that only the Manufacturer knows about, in case if anyone needs to go that far into checking VIN #'s, i beleive usually involving fraud cases, etc....Just about every manufacturer does this
Dash VIN's aren't necessarily required are they?

^ lol thats what you think.. until you get pulled over by a cop and they shine their light on ur dash board through the window...
my idea was since i dont have one, i should just print one out on one of those platic label machinese and spray paint it black ;) looks just the same but ill just trim the corners to round them off

that's when they'll ask to see 2 other VIN #'s, i.e. my door jam and on the firewall...
one time i got a parking ticket and the cop left the space for VIN # empty cause my plate wasnt there..

Nissan dosent replace vin plates, go to dmv. If a cop pulls you over and your dash vin dosent match your other vin then they will ask questions.

not sure where you are at but around here they don't check the vin. I've never once had a cop do that. only time I've seen it happen was when my buddy got pulled over in a 95 talon that he had done the 99 eclipse body conversion on the cop checked the dash to make sure it was the right car and he hadn't used another cars tags. I don't think they'd check unless they had a good reason too.

On my old Civic, it didn't have a VIN # plate on the dash because it was a theft recovery. It got a "modified" VIN # stamped into the door jamb by a CA state ref, deeming it safe to be operated. As far as "secret" VIN #'s being stamped on cars, I too would be interested to know where it's located.

i covered my VIN on my dash up with electrical tape (there's been a rash of car thefts around here where the thieves had keys made for the cars they stole). a cop pulled me over and asked why it was there, but only wanted me to uncover it to let him make sure the vin on my insurance card was correct and on my bill of sale (had a dealer tag on at the time).

By law you must have atleast 2 VIN's which must be located on the dash and the door jam

This seceret vin number you speak of i have never seen and i have stripped 2 seperate 240s to a shell, no wires, no panles, just steering and metal rods welded in place of the struts. I'd really like to find that thing, when i get some free time this week i'll look around in the car i've got striped in my garage to see if i can find it.

Every car has a serial number stamped onto the frame when the frame is first constructed. Its usually on the driverside near the back of where the door is located. While this is not a VIN# per say, the serial number on the frame is documented along with the VIN when the vehicle leaves the factory. If someone where to really want to see if the car is leget, they would have to find the serial number buy removing body panels, and built up oxidation and road grim.
This serial number is what is used by many classic car collectors to authenticate if a car is original (my dad did then when purchasing his 1971 Dodge Charger SuperBEE and is often the easiest way to tell if a Shelby Cobra is authentic or a kit car...that and fuel line diameter)

Thanks for the update Wayne *facepalm* I'm pretty sure in the 6 years that passed when this thread was originally created we've learned having mismatching vins on your car, no matter what your excuse - federal offense.

^^^ I had one and I hated that, they also put a nice stamp of the assigned vin into the strut tower that digs through your nice paint to the metal. And getting pulled over is always a hassle, for me at least.
"Is this your vehicle? Where is your vin? The information I'm pulling up off my computer is saying this is blah bla ba bla...Show me your vins...." 10-15mins later...."Well the reason i pulled you over was because you didn't use your turn signal when making the right turn" (which is the only turn you can make)
Assigned VIN's:axe:....be careful when buying cars from ppl when they swapped dashes or interior parts

call chp.
tell them you purchased your vehicle, and the car didnt/doesnt have a VIN (hopefully its the dash one)
chp will go on a rant on WHY you dont have one.
explain again you bought it like that.
he'll set you up an appointment.
take your car to chp, and all required paperwork.
(remember, your going to chp, if you have any mods, they'll give you a ticket for them if theyre not carb legal.
chp will inspect your car.
and after couple of questions and showing proof, and possibly a rant on why you shouldnt purchase cars with missing vins,
chp will bolt a new vin on your door jam.
if youre in cali, its a blue tag, hence the term, "getting your car blue tagged"
then you'll be able to rock your car without a vin since you'll have one on your door jam and chp will have a record on file on why you were missing a vin.
cost? it used to be 75dllrs a while back, but not sure anymore.
