Here is the situation:
Current owner does not have title in his name.
He has a pink slip from the original owner transferring the car to John Doe who sold it with a bill of sale to the current "owner".
If i take the old original pink slip to dmv can the car be transferred in my name? Ive heard yes/no from some of my buddies but im hoping some zilvian muscle could come in handy at this point. Thanks in advance.
Here is a simple version of the situation:
A sells to B and pink slip says B is the new owner.
B sells to C and they only write up a bill of sale.
I checked out the vin too and it just has a non op status. I believe it has been non op for over 20 years. Lol

That's 100% fine. Just get a bill of sale from the 'current owner.' As long as everything can be traced (which in this situation it can through the pink slip and bill of sale) then you're ok. I've been in a similar situation before.

You may want to check online at DMV too. They might want some documentation. Might save you an extra trip and long wait time. Also, if you have AAA you can do most DMV transactions in one of their offices.

I think you guys saved me from a headache. Now im a bit more confident about the process. The seller agreed to go to AAA to do the paperwork, if it falls through - fine; if not - ill have myself a pretty decent 620 to lug my surfboards and go kart. Haha.

Your fine. I had to do the same process as well. Just get a transfer form at the dmv.

Nice. Worst case scenario i know where the previous owners live so ill have to do some door knocking and ass kicking for making me do their unfinished business - hahaha.

Just a little update. Went and picked up the shell which has not been registered since 1987. Went to dmv because its closer than AAA and i didnt want to findout AAA cant help or something like that. Anyways i got to the lady at the window and she pulls up the late fees etc - $807 to get it registered. I said - omg you have to be kidding me. She replies - dont faint just yet. Then she proceeds to punch more keys on the keyboard and prints out a paper with the adjusted amount - $260. So i paid and sang all the way back home. The end.

Yeah unless the woman made a mistake when she printed the first paper. I think the state just wants to get every dime they can rather than have people like me walk out and push these cars down a hill hahaahha. In either case, the world will end this year because of this.....haahah
