I'm new to this sight and the s14 is my first one but its def not my first project. This may offend some of you but I have been looking at doing the sr swap for awhile now and I just think out of all the time I have spent talking to people and researching an ls may be the way to go. I am tired of the ass pain of boosted engines. They are just not reliable a lot of times. I am a marine so I don't have a mad amount of money to rebuild and swap engines all of the time. I have noticed a lot of people doing this especially in the drifting scene and was wondering how you guys felt about it or have any advice on it. I'm open to anything and by all means if you can give me a good enough reason to stick with an sr jz or rb swap I'm all ears.. Thanks guys.

im in the middle of the ls1 swap rite now and so far its been a breeze all the help is there if you know where to look and you can get everything for the swap that you need if you got the money and i know once im done ill have a reliable drift machine but if i didnt get the motor and tranny for the price i wanted then my second route would have been the 1jz+r154 swap, go with wat you can afford cuz it adds up real quick

boosted engines can be very reliable, they just require a lot of supporting mods like bigger injectors, intercoolers, bigger mafs/MAP sensor, tuning, bigger turbo/manifold etc to make big horsepower as opposed to the v8 where it's all displacement out of the box

I personally just like the idea of having a boosted engine that gets 27mpg cruising and 300hp on tap..and the noise/cool factor of boost lol

Turbo engines are reliable. The problem is when people tweak, mod, crank up the boost without knowing what they're doing, thats when the engine starts having issues.

But ultimately, it all comes down to your preference. My old roomate had an LS1 swapped S14, wasnt that impressed honestly. Then again, I was running a 500hp SR at the time. I like the feeling of the power building up, aka turbo lag.

Its more expensive to swap in an LS1 than an SR. The catch is, you usually wont fuck around with the engine too much to make more power. My roomate kept receipts of everything he spent to do the swap and he came up with slightly below $9k for the whole swap and was making 305 whp and 360 ft/lbs of torque. If you put that into the SR20 perspective, you'd probably need to spend more than $9k total to do an SR swap, modding it and get it to reliably put down the same numbers.

There is nothing wrong with an LS1 swap. LS1's have long been recognized as the best combination of power, and reliability in a light and compact engine. Its fine to take pride in a brands engines (like Nissan), but silly to get offended by people making hybrid cars (like it seems so many rotary buffs do when people swap LS1's into RX7's).

You should keep in mind that LS1's easily get 30mpg in F-body's which are ~800lbs heaver than an S13. I had a friend with a 400+hp LS1 in an RX7 which ran 11's and consistently got more than 30mpg oh the highway.

I have been looking around trying to find a junk yard or something with a parts car so I can just pull everything I need but no luck the cheapest I have found so far was like 4000 with everything. I'm still up in the air about it. Is there a conversion kit for the ls swap? Thanks for the help guys!

drivers are what makes motor set up unrealible
and jsut kuz your a Marine isnt a excuse, i built plenty of cars when active

Haha I know it's not an excuse but married with a kid kinda puts a damper on things as well. I have a lot more work to do then just the engine swap. I bought it wrecked so I have been working through that stuff to. I think the sr swap cost just as much and then more to get it where the ls already is.

Some of us have families too N it takes time. So do what you can little by little but I would focus on everything else first then when it comes time to throw a motor in make a discision

I have a rb20 now stuffed into a 83 mercury cougar. it will be going in a notch mustang over the winter. but in any case. engine and trans was $1400~ extraparts to get it running <$500 and then bigger fuel pump injectors and turbo<$1000. it makes just less then 400whp and has proven to be very reliable. I have 20k miles on and I have blowen holes in two couplers and that is the biggest problem I have had.

before I decided on the rb20 I priced doing an ls swap. the truck engine is the way to go.
the L33 is used in 05-07 1500's. it is a 5.3 aluminum block and heads. roller cam and roller rockers. basicly a ls1 minus a few cubes. most junkyards sell them for $400-1000 summit sells a flexplate kit to adapt that engine too any chevy trans. a rwd th350 is $100-200 summit also sells the swap headers oilpan and motor/trans mounts for ls into s13-s14 cars. $1000 total then you need decide on carb or efi. the msd/vicjr intake for carb is <$800 or you can buy a reflashed truck computer and build a harness for about $300 + fuel system and reflash for mods.

I chose the rb in the end because I wanted to rev it do the moon. and have done so confidently and have not looked back. I might build a 5.3 later sometime but im happy with my rb.

Thanks for the help man I am gonna look around I was actually looking at the L33 I found a couple in junk yards close by I was just gonna pull everything I needed from it. I feel like rb is hella expensive I would love to do that. Im just not confident enough in myself to build engines like that I'm a lot more comfortable with a small block Chevy. I still have a few months to think about it and look for engines. Would you trust eBay I found a few black tops on there tranny and all for real cheap.

In the end it's your car. So who cares if it offends any one. People say all different types of music is offensive but it doesn't stop people from listening to it. And I'm ass deep in an rb25 project and you'll spend just as much money putting the rb in and to make 400 hp you need turbo etc. so do what you want man as long as you have fun with the car that's what matters. people on forums are to quick to judge and because it's the Internet they aren't scared to say anything. Take what you need from here and the rest as a grain of salt. I'm sure some one some where will hate on it, but who cares. Have fun and maybe give us more details on what kind of driving you plan on doing, and maybe the feel that you want from your car. Do you want power to surge up? Or do you want instant torque. This discussion is so broad so let's narrow it down. Then you will get the info you need.

I'm using the car for drifting I decided at first to do the ls swap because a lot of the guys out there are using them and have kinda talked me in that direction. I have been building cars for awhile but just this past year or so I have really got into drifting. I figured for the power without a shit ton of money an ls would be good.. And budderigs Were is the engine right now btw? And I'm in 29 palms right now I spent the last 4 years in lejeune though...

If you want to drift, doing an LS swap right off the bat is fucking stupid. Doing burn-outs and donuts is not drifting. Learn to actually control your car first.

Anyway, I would do SR, but I hate LS swaps. Mainly, because it takes the fun out of the car. Sure you have tons of torque, but the motor has no character. It's hard to explain, but those that have driver high HP SR's know what I'm talking about.

I will pm you about the rb it may be a minute I gotta drive back to the east coast soon. You don't think ls is solid for drift? I just have a shit ton of people I know that suddenly just became all about it and have been into it for years. I do like the sr but I don't know much about tearing into that myself and need to learn a shit ton before I could do the shit by myself. Yea it does suck out here sometimes but there are a lot of cool places way close! I have the s14 but I tore it all apart do it not running I just drive my everyday Toyota around here. Who are you with?
